1.2Mbps seems ok, but the problem is that i pay for a 2Mbps line..
But it's better than the chello cable line i had in the Netherlands.
It ranged from 128Kbits per second to **2 BITS per second** at peak hours.
That damn company shared its 1mbps connection (or something) with the entire town,
but they still charged full rate

To all of you who wonder why they don't reach the full speed they pay for. Remember the values are max possible values but not guarantied.
I would start complaining if I would drop below the next cheaper contracts speed.

The Vonage test just a couple minutes later said;
4.79 Mbps download with a 1Mb file taking 2sec
247 Kbps upload
I think the Vonage is more accurate.
It doesn't take 1min/meg to D/L files like that other one claims.
I worked for Verizon USA before, so I use this. http://infospeed.verizon.net
The important test of speed for me was downloading the backup of my website here at Frihost. It was coming to me at about 560Kbps and took about 2 min, 11 sec for 72 MB to download. Not bad. My connection is supposed to be way way way faster than that, but this is the internet, after all.
That Verison test said that I am almost 4 times faster than a T1 line.
That is such a load of BS.
I reran the original bandwidth test and got a more realistic 2sec/mb result.
Here are the 3 test links, you can do an A/B/C comparison.

It's not that good, because you can't do anything on internet in the background to make the test to work properly. Also if your net is functioning improperly in a short period of time just when you test it - it will provide bad results and drive you crazy :].
Refer to your internet provider, rather than to test your net by yourself, expect testing upload speed, which is in most provider option - unknown.
To check a internet speed i use http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed3/ i think its better.

11.8 megabits per second?! How is that possible? I'm paying for a 5 megabit line, and I get over twice that. Quite amazing. Though, I should admit, this connection never runs the way it should. Sometimes it's extremely sluggish and sometimes it's unbelievably fast. An example is when I was downloading a 65 MB file. Took a few seconds for Firefox to start the download. Then, in about a second, it was done.
so my new result... at least faster than I had before...

Hm, a bit slower than usual. I'm on some "experimental" connection, it's speed tends between 3000 and 6000 kb/s.

anyway, around 1-2 months ago i had cable instead of wireless and my internet was really fast i got told. so i assume with my wireless it is even faster now, the pages and just like a flash on the internet, it is never really slow either!

From a Texas home, 5154kbps down, 650kpbs up. Both Speakeasy and Vonage were tested. Results were within 0.1% of each other.
The test at http://www.ookla.com/speedtest/ showed me in Maine, which was wierd though... ....And ran just a bit slower.

I use the mcafee speedometer for my broadband connection. You can have a look
http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer/default.asp
However maximum capacity is upto 2Mbps(true speed without compression).
You can try at Speed Test...
This would be the result of my speed test:

this is my speedtest result, although my actual full speed is faster, my modem is only USB 1.1 and my sister has Ethernet rights at the moment. With Ethernet i normally get around 12-16 although one time i got 18 Mbs
it kinda sucks how my uploads are so slow, although they do get a little higher if theres no line noise (my dowloads skyrocket).

I am paying for 512 kbps?!

Since I'm in NZ and we lack seriously whe it comes to broadband and whatnot mine are most probably low.
I have no idea what my results mean but here they are :

Pretty bad because I own 2 mbit ADSL line, not 1.4 mbit. I guess I will just have to wait for FTTH.

i can't also go off those speed tests because they are also accurate. I don't mean just a little off, but completely at the other end of the scale. I also find it best to test downloading from a site that you now is lightning fast and see how you go.
I got:

I normally use http://speedtest.vonage.com which put me slightly higher. My ISP advertises "up to 10Mbps," I only wish I were closer to that figure.
I saw that others were using speedtest.net, my results with them were;
