I'm not sure if it's OpenSource, but Audacity is a pretty good one.
Audacity is opensource, I think. Cos it's homepage is on sourceforge.
I'd go with Audacity.
If you take Audacity, make sure to get all plugins you can. Here's a good collection of VSTs that work with Audacity: http://www.mda-vst.com/ Of course the Nyquist files on the Audacity site are also good.
Audacity is really cool, of course... And yes it is opensource from what I heard..
Audacity is a great tool for your audio editing needs. However, it is pretty simple and lacks some professional tools. Any suggestions that you have for a professional free audio editing tool?
Audio editor is not a open source.

Audacity is a good program. If you want better results try:
ACID Music studio and Cool edit Pro
ACID Music studio and Cool edit Pro
I had been using Nero wave editor and cool edit pro for quite some time. Then one day i had to edit some music for a dance program and i couldn't get to a comp with there software. From a google search , i got a few programs but most were junk except Audacity. It was pretty good and it's open source too. Only thing was that i had to download plug ins like the free lame encoder to save as mp3.
is there anything wrong with using garageband?
and NO I dont just use the loops that are givin with the program.

Adobe's Audition 2 is good one too, commercial tho..
Is Audacity (sp?) almost the same as Soundforge? I'm starting to hate soundforge for a lot of bugs
I'd rather switch with a free open-source one than stay with a slow commercial one.
