Lateral thinking is a term coined by Edward de Bono, a Maltese psychologist, physician, and writer. He defines Lateral Thinking as methods of thinking concerned with changing concepts and perception.

Put a tape recorder in their room and play it back for the Blind man - that, or write it down for a third friend to tell him. Wink

Use a text-to-speach program. The Dumb can type in anything he wants to say and make the program speak to the Blind. =)

Damn. someone took my answer. Write to or use sign language to communicate to an intermediary who will then tell the blind man. So what is lateral thinking....make up original answers to problems?

Lateral Thinking is "thinking sideways". It's a hard thing to do, you need to look at the smaller concepts inside the matter, and see if they're the answer to the problem. Like mensa mind challenges:

"You are a bus driver. 5 people get on the bus at the depot, and you drive to the next station. 3 people get off, and 8 people get on. One person doesn't pay his fare and you report this. At the next station, 3 people get on and nobody got off. What's the name of the bus driver?"

"literal" thinking would tell you to find the name of the bus driver according to how many people are on the bus, how many got on, or how many got off. You can't figure it out. However, if you do some lateral thinking, you'll find that right at the start it says "YOU are a bus driver". The answer, quite simply, is your name. Lateral Thinking, I say, is taking the smaller concepts to fix the problem.

Put a coin in a bottle and then stop the opening with a cork. How can you get the coin out of the bottle without pulling out the cork or breaking the bottle?

He could use tactile sign language, the way most blind mutes communicate. But bet you’ve got a very clever right brain response.

Hey, did you say "dumb" - a stupid, fool or "dumb" - can't speak. The first case may spoil it or not say anything at all. If it's the second. The dumb must be communicating from his young age through some means "why should he all of a sudden end up in some trouble speaking to a particular person now?". The obstacle can be fear which shall be easily spotted by others. Even, if unspotted the dumb would panic and might burst with the truth. He might jus ignore and carry with work.
