some questions - (write in binary and zip)

Mgccl
ok, now I have ALREADY get data from a file by binary,
and turn them into HEX
and edited them
now... I want to put them back, in Binary mode...
So I decide to use hexdec()
then use decbin()
Now a friend told me, those things will be strings, and if I write to a document... it willl be ascii zeros and ones.
How to put them back in binary mode?

Also, what about if I don't want to write a file, make the new, edited data in the memory and zip it and send to the client? or should I save it then zip it and let user download, then delect it?
