I can't confirm, but I just heard on radio (live) by a reporter there who is watching a US Carrier approach Lebanon/Israel area.
It had to take at least a few days for it to get there from the Indian Ocean, so I would be willing to be there's more going on here than meets the eye.
A Carrier, especially of the US, can approach a military Hot Spot just to be on the alert. It might be on a peace keeping mission as well. Just the approach does not mean hostility.
I hope the US does not get trigger happy and side with Israel and attack lebanon....Rather they should try to being an end to the current hostility.

If anything, they will push Lebanon to denounce and remove the Hesbulah, who are run by Iran and Syria.
Between Israel and one US Carrier, anyone in the area better be paying real close attention.
Terrorists need to remember something about Israel, AND the US. You can push us pretty far without too much reprisal. But when you push us past the point of no return, watch the ****** out.
Well, if the US supports Israel in this they will lose any shred of remaining credibility.
... and who exactly do you think they should support?
datter
PS- I would be very interested to hear any confirmation of this... if anyone happens to find any.
Read my post about Hezbollah. That is probably why the US Carrier is there.

I would say the US is sending ships for the same reason that the UK is sending ships: There are a lot of their nationals in Beirut who they want to evacuate. There is even an American university there. However, it will probably have just been made a lot more difficult because the Israelis bombed the port this afternoon.
hehe..talk of irony....But I did read in the news that America has told all it's people to get out...and that arrangements were being formulated

Actually, It's most likely to support Israel and a Carrier can carry up to 4,000 Servicemens and few hundred Fighters and when theres a Carrier, That means its arriving in a Fleet or "Carrier Battle Group" in which it contains Frigates, A Sub, A few destroyers and so on.
And I doubt it's a peace keeping mission, There is currently a UN Peacekeeping Delagation in Lebanon since 1978 I think.

That might be a joke but it's so true. If you look at how violent Isreal and the US are in comparison to the "terrorists", it's pretty clear who is the most ruthless when push comes to shove. War is definently in the interests of some influential people in both countries. The US can profit off of large contracts to defense companies and Isreal can gain more arab territory with US support.
A US carrier doesn't rationally "keep the peace" when the enemy is a scattered armed faction. It's only purpose is to protect Isreal from a national retaliation, which is predictable when a nation like Isreal is using bullshit excuses to use it's powerful army. I think Isreal is trying to show its power over it's neighbors like Palestine because they are resisting Isreali control. Isreal has complete control over Palestine's electricity and a lot of its infrastructure. They could kill thousands in the name of anti-terrorism if they wanted to. All they have to do is call the leaders of Palestine "terrorists" and not negotiate with them. And they could get away with it even if the UN claims that they are breaking the charter on human rights.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon has ordered five military ships and thousands of Marines and sailors to help transport U.S. citizens out of Lebanon, a move that could sharply speed up the evacuation as fighting continues.
The U.S. Navy said on Tuesday the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group and the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit were ordered to head to the area to help evacuate thousands of Americans.
The group includes the three ships in the Iwo Jima group -- the helicopter carrier USS Iwo Jima, amphibious transport dock USS Nashville and the dock landing ship USS Whidbey Island, together carrying 2,200 Marines and sailors. |
It's a marine assualt ship, not an aircraft carrier in the traditional sense.

Well, I guess the sole reason why a Carrier is on the move because of the evacuation logistics for the US citizens there according from the news. It would be a bad move for US to indulge itself about the local issue there.
