Sport is so pointless... can't we ban sport or something? :)

Ok, I really, really hate all kinds of sports. I mean, you can't deny that it is totally and utterly meaningless, can you? Think about it, what if all the energy and time put into different kinds of sport was used to do something meaningful and useful instead, something of lasting value? Imagine all the good stuff that would get done then that doesn't get done now because people choose to spend their time on something totally meaningless like running around trying to grab a ball from other people, or something like that.

What is the outcome of that? Nothing! You could just as well have placed yourself on a chair and looked straight into a wall for 90 minutes. The result would have been the same: nothing.

Hello, people? There is a world out there! People starving, animal speices becoming extinct, polar caps melting. Isn't it kind of selfish, almost cynical, to just say "Well, nah, I'd rather run around chasing this ball a little longer".

I'm getting depressed think about all this waste of time and energy... please, if there's somebody out there that agress with me, then lighten up my mood and tell me so. And of course, if you don't agree, please tell me that also, and why! I really can't imagine how you "sport people" Smile can motivate what you do, so I'm really curious to read your explanations.

You my friend are wrong. Sports is physical. Meaning that you are moving your body parts. Increasing your heart rate, pumping blood to muscles all over your body. The benefits of sports/excercise has long proven being good for you. Excercising/practicing sports has produce these healthy effects:
Quote:

• Reduces the risk of dying prematurely.
• Reduces the risk of dying prematurely from heart disease.
• Reduces the risk of developing diabetes.
• Reduces the risk of developing high blood pressure.
• Helps reduce blood pressure in people who already have high blood pressure.
• Reduces the risk of developing colon cancer.
• Reduces feelings of depression and anxiety.
• Helps control weight.
• Helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints.
• Helps older adults become stronger and better able to move about without falling.
• Promotes psychological well-being.
Points taken from this site

Sitting in a chair and watching a wall provides no benefits to you at all.

Or how about, "Nah, I'd rather go onto the internet and post some useless drivel."

Everyone is good at something. The best at what they do get paid to do it, whether you agree with what they do or not. I would venture to say that 90% of all people who say sports is stupid, and that atheletes are overpaid spoiled brats (even though some are), are simply jealous. That's what it sounds like here.

I think society's obsession with sports & sports stars might be closer to the point yoshi6000 was trying to make - all of the hype and advertising.
And I can agree, there.
The average male football fan knows more about the goings-on with his favorite team than he does about his wife & kids.
The sheer amount of money that people are willing to pay to watch never-ending football, basketball, golf, hockey, etc... is staggering.

But all of that watching, imitating, marketing and overzealous-fan violence that often accompanies a sporting event (whether televised or not) can usually be attributed to pride.
There's too much competition and ego-tripping, man.
We've (and I mean "we" as the human species, not as any particular culture or country) got too much of a need to be faster/stronger/better than anybody else who's doing the same thing.
And it's not competition for any practical purpose (like survival/mating rights/food), just pride & money.

Sure, money helps you make it in the world, but you don't need 80 million dollars just to keep food on the table & make ends meet.

An interesting article that ties into this subject, from a book written in 1999

True, no one "needs" 80 million, but playing sports is what puts food on the table for these people. They are professional atheletes, just like there are professional musicians, stock brokers, lawyers, doctors, etc. etc. By your logic, there should be no rock and roll since it is over hyped and the musicians are overpaid.

I'll agree that many fans get over zealous about sports to the point of neglecting their families/jobs, but if the fans are willing to pay, then the teams and atheletes will reap the benefits.
