Frankly, I am not an SEO expert but this is what I came to know about SEO.
Search optimization of a site has two parts, namely
1) On page optimization and
2) Off page optimization.
On page optimization is less important that off page optimization. An example to this fact comes from searching for the phrase "click here" in google. The site that ranks first is www.adobe.com, then comes paypal. None of these sites have the keyword-click here. But they rank because of backlinks. So offpage is more important.
Onpage:
1) Use metatags ie description and keywords
2) Bolden, italisize, emphasize keywords throughout the page.
3) use h1, h2 tags for headings.
4) use acronym and abbr tags to expand any shortforms
5) make use of alt image tags
6) Don't stuff keywords, use hidden text or use hidden links
Offpage
1) Join link exchange programs like www.linkmetro.com. Do link exchanges only with relevant sites.
2) Pay somebody to put links on their sites if they have high PR sites
3) Join forums and make posts. The signature links do count.
4) Open a blog to keep track of progress on the site. It also may get you a few visitors.
5) Regularly (daily) check the sites your are linking to. If they get banned by the Search engines, it is possible yours may get banned too. It is very dangerous to point to bad sites.
Last but not the least: It is the relevent content that matters. Update the sites content on a daily basis.
If these steps are followed, the site will get a good search engine placement. But as we know, it is much easier in theory than to implement in practice. SEO is still a difficult job, that's what makes SEO experts worth their weight in gold!
