I don't know if modern psychology can define clearly what 'Mind' is.
It is really funny that all of us, on hearing the word 'Mind', instinctively understands what is meant. However, if any one of us is asked to define it, I doubt we can even start to do so. It's too complex...
I guess its okay to say that mind is not a physical organ. Or is it? Is mind the brain, or situated somewhere in the brain?
I know of one book that looks into this matter - The Emperor's New Mind by Roger Penrose. I purchased that book. I should admit that reading (laboriously) through those thousand pages only confused me more.
The Indian Vedanta philosophy seems to take a curious stand:
It says that the 'ego' feeling that everyone has, the feeling that 'I exist', really comes from God, which it defines as pure consciousness.
Why, then, do we not realize this? Why do we not know God?
This is because the consiousness gets 'filtered' through this thing called the Mind. As it comes out through the mind, it gets tainted, and we get this feeling of 'I'm a person' instead of the real 'I'm one with God'.
So, Mind is something that alters the nature of consiousness.
This is why all meditation techniques try to 'calm' the mind. Once the mind is inactive, the filtering dies down and we start getting the 'I'm one with God' feeling.
I think this is worth considering.
If you think all this is B***t, tell me what you opinion is.
