The most heartbreakingly sad song you've heard

ColdFire
I know there's a lot but post only the SADDEST. It must have a sad message and melody.

My number 1 choice would have to be Hallelujah by Rufus Wainwright. Its featured in Shrek see? Crying or Very sad

Quote:
I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty
in the moonlight
overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne,
she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe I've been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you'd let me know
What's real and going on below
But now you never show it to me do you?
Remember when I moved in you?
The holy dark was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe there's a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It's not a cry you can hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Crying or Very sad
Insanity
Jimmy Eat World - 23

It's my favorite sad or whatever song.
kazikame
It's either Bedshaped or Atlantic, both by Keane.

Quote:
You'll follow me back with the sun in your eyes and on your own
Bedshaped, and legs of stone
You'll knock on my door and up we'll go
In white light, I don't think so
But what do I know?

Quote:
I don't want to be old and sleep alone
An empty house is not a home
jeremoi
I'd say "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" by Stars. Its really sad and goes nicely on a snowy day.

Quote:
Tears in Heaven
( Eric Clapton )

Would you know my name if I saw you in Heaven?
Would you feel the same if I saw you in Heaven?
I must be strong and carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong here in Heaven ......

Would you hold my hand if I saw you in Heaven?
Would you help me stand if I saw you in Heaven?
I'll find my way, through night and day,
'Cause I know I just can't stay here in Heaven .....

Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart, have you begging .... please ...

Beyond the door, there's peace I'm sure.
And I know there'll be no more tears in Heaven .......

Would you know my name if I saw you in Heaven?
Would you feel the same if I saw you in Heaven?
I must be strong and carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong here in Heaven .......

Edited to add quote box, but it already seems to have appeared.

Also to ad that the new Big and Rich song 'The 8th of November'
is a pretty sad subject also.

Mine would have to be What Hurts the Most by Rascal Flatts (country). It is a really sad song and story about a girl that is madly in love with her boyfriend and one day he is driving home and he crashes and dies. She can't face her friends and can't get over him. Really sad song, you should check it out on Yahoo!.

Another sad one would be Sarabeth, another song by Rascal Flatts. This one talks about how a girl has to go through cancer and kemotherapy and she looses her hair. Then her boyfriend shaves his head so that she doesn't feel as bad about going to the prom. Happy ending, sad song.

I think the original was by leonard cohen, but Jeff Buckley's rendition is the best by far.

The saddest for me at the moment is another song by Jeff Buckley--- "Lilac Wine".

I second the nod to Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah -- track that one down. I love Rufus but Buckley's version is definitive.

My vote for saddest, though, is Gloomy Sunday. Many have covered it; I prefer Elvis Costello's version of it.

The saddest song I have ever heard is definitely
"Something In The Way" by Nirvana.
The lyrics are a bit crazy but the song is very depressing.
It is on the Nevermind album.

The saddest i have heard must be Angra - Bleeding Heart. The melody and all makes it very sad.

I'm Still Waiting - Bob Marley
Beautiful, sad, very emotional..

I'll repeat the song that someone posted;

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton

so sad, emotional.. Crying or Very sad
Tatsumaru
'Sadness and Hate' by Wintersun. Very emotional growling and singing, sad, dark and eery melody as well. It's the last song of the album, over 10 minutes long, and it's very epic as well. The last scream of the song is awesome, a simple 'I give my life to you...'. Beautiful.

Hunting high and low, from A-ha. 3 years ago, I had a boyfriend that lived far away from me. Then this music made me cry sometimes...

I'd say Wilco's Hummingbird, it's about being forgotten and dying alone : (

it's moving, emotional, but not sad for my understanding.

this should be a chinses pop song by the chinses singer Liang Jiangru.

the word that touched me was that, why it is not you, who accompanied me till the end...

so sad when the first time heard it from one friend's blog, when he just broke up with his lady.

Oh god yes. When you first hear the lyrics, it sounds like a forlorn love song. But when you then hear what it's actually about, it sends shivers down your spine.

Quote:
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?

Mull that over, then realise that it's written for Clapton's son, who died aged four in a horrific accident.

The context alone puts it right up there...

Other contenders are Buckley's version of Hallelujah, and his original work, Forget Her.

Quote:
Well my tears falling down as I try to forget,
Her love was a joke from the day that we met.
All of the words, all of her men,
all of my pain when I think back to when.

Remember her hair as it shone in the sun,
the smell of the bed when I knew what she'd done.
Tell yourself over and over you won't ever need her again.

But don't fool yourself,
she was heartache from the moment that you met her.
My heart is frozen still
as I try to find the will
to forget her, somehow.
She's out there somewhere now.

Incredible singer, guitarist and lyricist. Forget Her contains what I think is probably the most potent and powerful individual line I can think of.

Quote:
I think I've forgotten her now...

I have this song on my Ipod I love it!
another version of this song is in the OC right? I love it.

One of the most emotional songs I know, in that kind of way, is Everdream by Tuomas Holopainen. The beautiful lyric, and the magical music brings you into the mind of their creator. You may read the lyric http://www.nightwish.com/en/band/lyrics?a=5#42 , and listen to one minute of the song http://www.nightwish.com/en/files/audio

It's hard because most of the music I listen to is Electronic Music and features very little/none at all lyrical input most of the time apart from the odd sample. There are some melodies that have taken me away or made me feel bad or whatever though, never "heart-breaking" as such though.

"The Little Girl" by John Michael Montgomery

================================

Her parents never took the young girl to church,
never spoke of his name,
never read her his word.
Two non-believers walking lost in this world,
took [their] baby with them,
what a sad little girl.

Her daddy drank all day and her mommy did drugs,
never wanted to play,
or give kisses and hugs.
She'd watch the [TV] and sit there on the couch,
while her mom fell asleep,
and her daddy went out.

And the drinking and the fighting,
just got worse every night.
Behind [their] couch she'd be hiding,
oh what a sad little life.
And like it always does,
the bad just got worse, with every slap and every curse.
Until her daddy in a drunk rage one night,
used a gun on her mom, and then took his life.

And some people from the city,
took the girl far away.
To a new mom,
and a new dad,
kisses and hugs everyday.
Her first day of [Sunday] school,
the teacher walked in,
and a small little girl,
stared at a picture of him.

She said I know that man,
there on that cross.
I don't know his name,
but I know he got off.
Cause he was there in my old house,
he held me close to his side,
as [I] hid there behind our couch,
the night that my parents died.

Yes, absolutely. I was trying to think of a sad song. Upon reading this I honestly said out loud "ohh, yes!"

Any Day Now by Elbow is painful.

This is a hard one. I like Jimmy Eat World's 23. Another I can think of that's really good is Round Here by Counting Crows. I dunno if that really falls under saddest, but it's definitely a good one.

Oh! I thought of another one. Dishwalla's Angels or Devils. Absolutely brilliant.
