| North Korea launched at least six missiles on Wednesday, including a long-range Taepodong-2, defying the international community after weeks of warnings to avoid such a provocative step.
The Taepodong-2, a multi-stage missile that might be able to reach Alaska, apparently failed 40 seconds into its flight, U.S. officials said. The U.N. Security Council was to meet later in the day, at Japan's request, to discuss the latest move by the reclusive Stalinist state, diplomatic sources said. South Korea's military stepped up its alert level after the launch, Yonhap news agency cited a military source as saying. The two Koreas are technically still at war more than half a century after the inconclusive truce which halted the 1950-1953 Korean conflict. Some 30,000 U.S. troops remain in South Korea under a mutual defense treaty. U.S. National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley called the multiple firings "provocative behavior", but said they posed no threat to U.S. territory. He said the launches might have been a Pyongyang attempt to steal the nuclear spotlight away from Iran, which has been the main focus of U.S. nuclear diplomacy in recent months. "Obviously, it is a bit of an effort to get attention, perhaps because so much attention has been focused on the Iranians," Hadley told reporters. But like many U.S. officials, he said it was impossible to be sure about Pyongyang's motives. North Korea, whose government pays close attention to symbolic gestures, chose July 4, the day the United States marks Independence Day. The launch came just hours after the U.S. space shuttle Discovery blasted off from its Florida launch-pad. FIREWORKS "It got everybody's attention on the Fourth of July. (North Korean leader) Kim Jong-Il can set off fireworks, too," said John Pike, director of the security Web site GlobalSecurity.org. Japan said it would consider immediate economic sanctions against North Korea. NHK television reported that the government had banned visits by North Korean ferries for six months. The Japanese yen and the South Korean won both slipped against the dollar on the launch news, with Tokyo and Seoul stock markets also lower. In Seoul, the government said South Korean authorities would take action if necessary. Tokyo also called on Pyongyang to return to six-country talks on ending its nuclear weapons program, which have been stalled since November. "It is regrettable and we protest strongly against North Korea for going ahead with a launch despite warnings from relevant countries, including Japan," Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe told a news conference in Tokyo. "It is a serious problem from the standpoint of our national security, peace and stability of the international community and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction." In a separate incident, but underlining the tensions in the region, Japan summoned South Korea's ambassador to demand Seoul halt a survey of disputed waters that began earlier in the day. South Korea and Japan came close to a high-seas showdown in April when Tokyo said it planned a survey in waters near a desolate outcrop of islands called Tokto in Korean and Takeshima in Japanese, but tensions eased after talks. LONG-RANGE MISSILE North Korean media made no mention of the multiple launches, Japanese reporters in Pyongyang said. Television channels had no programming on Wednesday morning, they said, and state radio led its bulletins on Kim Jong Il's visit to a tire factory. Experts say the Taepodong-2 has a possible range of 3,500-4,300 km (2,190-2,690 miles). A State Department official told Reuters the long-range missile had failed 40 seconds after it was launched. A senior South Korean security official said the Taepodong-2 had splashed down in the Sea of Japan, off the peninsula's east coast. Such a flop, said Daniel Pinkston, director of the East Asia non-proliferation program for the California-based Center for Nonproliferation Studies, would be a blow to Pyongyang. "If there was failure that early on in the flight, there is no way they could make any claims of test-launching a satellite as they did in 1998. They will not be able to exploit the propaganda value of that after that type of failure," he said. The first time North Korea test-fired a long-range missile -- in 1998 over Japan -- it triggered a sharp increase in regional tension and spooked Far East Asian financial markets. Last week, President George W. Bush echoed earlier U.S. threats of a harsh response if North Korea went ahead with a launch. Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said Tokyo would "apply various pressures" but declined to give details. Experts say that Pyongyang is developing long-range missiles to have the capability one day to deliver a nuclear bomb, but that it is years away from acquiring such a weapons system. North Korea said in February 2005 it now had nuclear weapons. It has threatened to build up its arsenal several times since then in response to what it perceives as increased U.S. threats. U.S. officials said earlier an air force complex protecting the nerve center of U.S. homeland defense at Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado, had been put on heightened alert amid persistent reports North Korea might test-fire a long-range missile. On Monday, Pyongyang vowed to respond with an "annihilating" nuclear strike if attacked pre-emptively by the United States. |
North Korean Missile Launched
Well, now, it appears that they are asking for trouble. I really hope nothing serious comes of this. I mean, sure, countries have a right to test their weapons - but why would they test them if they aren't going to use them? Hmm...

I hope poo doesn't hit the fan!! kim jong illllll is certifiably certifiable. So is GWB. So to me that's a recipe for a room sprayed with poo! The world has just too many nutcases with too much power right now and its just downright scary. These guys have access to weapons that can flatten things we really don't want flattened. I am not an advocate of political assassinations, so I suggest a kidnapping campaign targeting the following targets:
kim jong illllll
GWB
Robert Mugabe
These targets would be placed in an igloo in antarctica where they would spend 10 years thinking about how insane they are, how they are going to get their s**t together and make it up to the rest of us!! Friggin psychos!

I think perhaps you should be in there with them...
One of the poorest countries in the world are doing this kind of things. Rather they could focus on improving their economy and feeding the hungry citizens. Their children are dieing due to malnutrition, no wonder their dictator is such a fool. He will do anything to keep himself in power and will not care about the plight of his countrymen.
Shame on North Korea!
Shame on North Korea!

What is your point exactly? This post simply looks like flame bait to me... maybe you'd like to share your opinion and tell lyndonray why you think he should be in there with them?

Shame on you because you do not really understand the dynamics of the world economy. They are in such a preacrious position thanks to the economic santions and the economic imperialism of the United Sates. And those weaposn are for protection. guess against who? Yes! the United States. You should read this:
Lennin, Vladimir Ilich. "Imperialism as the last stage of capitalism" and you will certainly understand my point.

You should heed your own words... "shame on you" for being uninformed, ignorant and/or down-right stupid.
The sanctions are there for a reason. The US didn't just arbitrarily say "Lets stop sending stuff to them" because we were bored.
And it wasn't just the US.
Please stop with the ignorant US bashing. Your misinformation truly shows your level of education and your un-willingness to educate yourself.
So when was the last time the US threatened to nuke N. Korea?
Oh, that's right, they didn't.
"Defend themselves against the US"
LoL! I didn't know the US was attacking them. Damn liberal media hiding facts again I see.
Oh. Ouch!
N. Korean "long range missle" comes up short. (Poor little fella, it must be genetics)
I have to give them credit, one of their medium range missles apparently went for 6 minutes, a long run for the N. Koreans I suppose. Perhaps a free sample of Viagra is in order here.

| The long-range missile, called the Taepondong-2, failed less than a minute after liftoff. It's unclear what North Korea learned from launching the shorter and medium-range ones, which fell into the Sea of Japan, but could be capable of striking its neighbors. |

hahaha.
Yeah, supposedly they already tried this and it did the same thing so.....But i still think we can't be too careful.
Agreed, eventually they will have effective nuclear weapons and delivery systems, if we dont stop them. Until then we can laugh at them. I bet a close up shot of one of their missiles would reveal some duct tape. I can just imagine a confused looking N. Korean fellow prepping some systems with the aid of a can of WD-40.
Who cares if they can send a missle to Alaska? That's not even news worthy. Just let me know if they can at least hit Seattle with something big, then I would be furious.
I dont really find this a problem, its not like the america etc. rule the world. I mean let them have there damm missles other nations have them too. we just hide behind the exuce of being peacefull and powerfull, but i really think were just afraid of north-korea and county's like china because if it came to a full scale war we woulnd't know who would win.
The reason we can't let them have missiles that can hit Alaska is because that all you need to design is a missile with slightly more fuel, and you CAN hit Seattle. Or Portland (My home city). Or San Fransisco. Or Los Angeles. They arnt, on a global scale, THAT much further away from NK than the continental US. Assuming NK is successfully able to produce a missile that could hit alaska, missiles to hit those cities are obvious next goals.
Why are you goin to "test" a missle that huge unless ou were infact going to invade someplace?

Uh, to make sure it works? If you have a working system and big enough warheads, the idea is that an enemy will think twice before invading you. This was the whole idea of the US and USSR building and testing missles and nukes back in the old days. Neither one seriously thought about invading the other (I hope, I hope, I hope), but they felt a second strike capability would be a strong deterrent. The MAD concept sort of grew out of that scenario.
I know N. Korea has a real nut case in the drivers seat right now, but even he knows that launching 5 or 10 nukes at the US would only bring total annihilation for his country. Im betting they just want to have a big stick as a threat.
i bet they just hid the real truth by saying it was test.
I think the US should take a back seat to the UN on dealing with the missile launches.

This seems to almost certainly be the case. Crazy Kim just wants more bargaining chips. To bad his best missile tumbled straight our into the sea and made GW have to hold back a laugh when being ask for his thoughts on the matter. Hell, these hill-billys in my neighborhood where doing better than that just the other day.

So i take it you like all three of these guys huh? Well good for you!
I don't think kim jon ill is retarded enough to actually attack the US, S. Korea or China, or anyone else for that matter. He is just trying to get attention in the only way he can: by threatening to cause trouble. I am more worried about those weapons of his getting into the hands of the wrong guys who aren't scared to blow things up. Granted, him and islamic radicals dont have much in common except for a serious lack of any common sense, so i don't think they would get into an unholy marriage. But who is to say there isn't another group of radicals who Kim can work with? I think that's where his real threat lies! Look at Al-Qaida. Before 9/11 if you asked the average joe what he thought of al-qaida he wouldn't know what you were talking about. So what if there is another pissed off group like that out there, that isn't in the spotlight?
they tested 4 and 3 failed , but one worked perfectly ,
anyway this is the perfect time for then to test missiles and get away ,
cuz the usa is busy in iraq and dont want another war ,
plus there is a chance that usa or europe will offer some money to northkorea to stop thier missile program

I think N. Korea just want to be on the stage again. The test may be just an excuse so they can have good exchange for some demands like in Iran.

You are the stupid!!! imperialist gringo!!!!! You believe your system is right and everything else is wrong!!!! Your brain have been washed just like a six years-old kid. And who has named the U.S police of the world??? Why are you so afraid of Korea Nuclear Capability. I am not because my country have done anything against them but you on the contrary....mmmm yeah, I understand whay you are so afraid. jajajajjajaja
You really should ignore S3. He's a new breed of troll with a borg
he inherited the resistance is futile motto. Don't argue him, just let him die for a little more attention.

Damn. I should have used the 60lb test line for this one! "Hey, Ma, get a bigger gaff, this one's HUGE!"
You know, risu, (mind if I call you risu?) your reply was pretty entertaining. I'm glad I got your attention. Let me clarify, I am a capitalist gringo. I believe my system IS right, and the radical islamic system IS wrong. I want to see DEMOCRACY or other types of ELECTED Government spread. I don't want to see Dictatorships continue to rule.
You should be able to select your own ruling party. Do you disagree with that?
If believing in the way I live, and believing in fighting to death for my familie's freedom mean I'm a brain-washed 6 year old, then by all means, I'll take that label gladly.
I'm not afraid of NK's nukes. (Please show me where I gave that impression, because I thought I made it very clear that I thought they were a joke and largely propoghanistic) I'm fairly certain we could quickly and easily stop any attempt by that psycho midgit to attack us or any of our allies. What I'm concerned about is taht he's sacrificing his entier nations well being because he wants to flex a little muscle and get noticed.
Oh, and as for the WORLD POLICE, I guess it just happens when you're the strongest kid on the block. But consider yourself lucky, becuase if it WASNT the United States, it WOULD BE another country. Which one? That's the 64 Million dollar question! Be careful what you wish for.
BTW, polar bear, I've been successfully trolling this board for over a year now.

Do I dare ask what they were making? Weapons for Moonshine Delivery (WMDs)?
