Any World CUP FAns
Do you mean my own country or the country that I am supporting in the current Football World Cup?
As usual I had been really looking forward to the World Cup this year. But unfortunately I was in Nepal during the early stages of the competition and the house where I stayed did not have a TV. Therefore I followed the Tournament online.
I had expected great things from Brazil and Argentina and also Germany since they were Hosts. The Brazil vs France Quaterfinal was the first match of Brazil that I got to see. And it was quite dissappointing. I am sad that they were knocked out. But they did not deserve to win that match. I think they played too coolly. And once France scored I knew they would not be able to score after that.
It would have been nice if Brazil had come to the Semis at least.
The way Argentina was knocked out was also very dramatic. They had the bad luck of losing their number 1 goal keeper and the reserve was really sub-par. Many people have expressed that Argentina was playing great soccer all throughout.
Spain was a surprise side in the tournament. Not that they have always been regarded as a strong side. But for me, they played much better than I had been expecting. Of course I had not seen their matches either but I did download most of the goals of the matches and I read about the matches online. I would have thought Spain would also have come further than they did.
Last night's semi-final of Italy vs Germany was a great, great match to see. Both teams played beautiful attacking football. Italy players were running around so much in the opening half hours that I was worried about them getting tired towards the end. Italy had 57% possession in the first half.
As expected their play did slow down in the second half and Germany were finally able to exert themselves. Both teams were making chances but failing to score. GErmany could have done with more brilliance from Ballack on whom they depend so much.
As the end of normal time got closer both the teams were going all out for the winning goal and we were treated to superb end to end football.
In extra time it became obvious that Italy was playing for penalties. I don't understand why they were so sure they can win on penalties as Germany has arguably the best goalie in the world and the the Germans have a great penalty record (I think the match commentator said they have scored 17 or their last 18 penalties).
But Italy too have a great goalie in the form of Buffon.
In the end it was ironic that it was Italy, who had been playing for penalties, ended up scoring twice in the last few minutes to extra time to win their place in the final.
I had been very sure that Germany would win this match. But that is the beauty of Soccer.

Well, the U.S. isn't too great, and I don't really like soccer, so I can't say I'm too much of a fan - although I like Brazil, France, and Italy the best so far. I've seen a few games here and there, nothing big.
