What do you think?
Is Karate (aside from its being a Budo), also a sport?
Yes, actually, I do think Karate is a sport. Hm... and I looked up the definition of the word, "sport," as well. According to Dictionary.com, a sport is the following definitions:
| Quote: |
1.
a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
b. A particular form of this activity.
2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
3. An active pastime; recreation. |
And Karate, if you think or know about it, all of the above, ah, definitions apply. Karate, like other sports such as basketball and football, are governed by a set or rules or customs. And like those sports, they do have competitions between one or more persons -- or teams. At the beginning of a match for instance, each person would bow to one another before beginning the match. That is part of the custom -- and etc.

Me too I thinks it is a sport. As soon as you have some sort of competition you can talk of a sport.
That's why snooker is also a sport, while no or nearly no physical effort is being done.
So definetely Karate is a sport, more it is a beautifull sport

i agree on snooker, it's not as exhausting as triathlon but still sport.
but no matter what the sportchannels say - poker is not a sport.
Well karate is a sport . You do compete with other players and win or lose . It has got its own rules and fould and stuff like that and what else it keeps you physically fit as a better sport will do.
I can't beleive this is a question. If they consider things like Darts, dancing, poker, etc a sport then Karate is absolutely a sport.
For those of you who consider darts, etc that I mentioned a sport forgive me for upsetting you. I consider those competitive games or contestes but not sports.

It is only a sport.
It has not been used in war for a long time. Therefore it is not Budo.
Thanks everyone!

So does your statement means that all other related activites to Karate (like taekwondo, aikido, judo, etc..), are not budo at all? Because they haven't been used in war for a long time?
of course karate is a sport...it has two opposing sides, rules, refs, fans, diffrent ways to score, a specific area of competition, boundrys, it is a work out, it takes training and hard work, yessss it is a sport.
Yes. İf you do it in streat to fight or to bea someone it is of course not sport. But if you do it in a sport hall this is absolutely a sport.

Funny you mention Judo and Aikido. Two Arts not developed in or for battle. So yes, they are sport. TKD too.
It's not that they haven't been used in war for a long time. They were never used for war. EVER.

Ok just to end this pointless arguing:
| Quote: |
| Budo (武道) is a Japanese term for martial arts. Traditional budo (from before the Meiji Restoration) is often referred to as koryu bujutsu, while more modern budo arts are called gendai budo. |
| Quote: |
Gendai budō (現代 武道) is a Japanese expression that is used to define the modern Japanese martial arts.
This term is used to describe the martial arts of aikido, judo, jukendo, iaido, karate, kendo, kyudo, naginatajutsu, and shorinji kempo, as each of the systems were established after the Meiji Restoration of 1868 in Japan. |
