It'll definitely either be Terry, Gerrard, or Neville. They're all club captains for some of the top teams in the world. Although I remember one game when Michael Owen was captain for a couple games but with the injury I don't think that'll be a viable choice.

I'd probably by Gerrard. He's like the first or second best player on the team. Not only that, he really plays his heart out in every match and supports the team on both offense and defense.

I think Gerrard will be the captain.

I hate Neville. I don't think he is that good. It's just that England don't have another right back.

It's not my business, but I saw all the England matches in Germany and only one conclusion I get: England without Rooney's spirit is different team. That guy is everything what football in England represent and I think Rooney would be irreplaceable for a decade! So, being a captain wouldn't be hard to cope for hm!

I think the best Captain to let England after Beckham would be John Terry, he has so far performed well for his club and now he should be the one. As a defender he will be about to command the midfilders and strikers. But there are other candidates such as Gerrard and Neville, but for me John Terry would be the best...

I agree with fkmax, John Terry would be a good Captain, he is a strong player and will be able to raise the morale of the England team.

I think about three posible future captains :
1. Rio Ferdinand
2. Frank Lampard
3. Steven Gerrard

If at all David Beckham goes out, it will be the following three, they have a very hard choice but will settle with one of the following three:

Candidate number one:
1). Steven Gerrard: His World Cup experience and his seniority will count.

Candidate number two:
2). John Terry

Candidate number three:
3). Frank Lampard

I think it's going to be either Terry or Gerrard. Gerrard will be my top choice though, he is the captain of his club and he is by far the best captain I've ever seen. Terry is also a good option, but comparing to Gerrard, he's not an ideal choice.

I don't like Terry as a choice. He's too hot and bothered on the pitch. I agree that a captain should be able to excite and motivate his team, but I only ever see him yelling angrily around the field. A captain should lead the team with a bit of class, and he never strikes me as having it. Wouldn't mind Neville, but he's 29 and who knows how long he'll be around. Another World Cup appearance is perhaps doubtful.

Rooney's no different

If he's made the captain, one thing is for sure.

He'd probably get a hefty fine after every match they lose for taking it out on the press

That guy seriously needs to tone down his temper

Lampard or Gerrard are good choices but it all depends on the team group. Some players are best suited for being captains than others and perhaps a player like Ferdinand or Terry can be also good choices.
Rooney is a good player but isn't the "captain". Perhaps with more years of experience he might be a good captain.
AndiMac
Rooney is only 20, he might grow up, you never know. I thought Beckham made a pretty good captain, which I never expected after his stupid stupid red card against Argentina way back when. But right now, no way is Rooney captain material.

I think somebody with a half a brain, a new hair do every week, has a wife who can't sing and can only kick a ball in the goal from a standing free kick.

Oh wait that's Beckham isn't it?

I think Terry would be the best for captain, and definately NOT rooney...not only is he an annoying young brat.. i dont think he would be a good leader for the team whereas, Terry would.

Well, thats my opinion Cool

John Terry, Any one eho can captain a bunch of overblown ego's at Chelsea should captain England. Gerrard is probably the favorite but his injury problems can hold him back and England need someone who will play almost every game. Neville is another good bet but he's getting to the end of his days and he's only playing for England cos there is no one else to play that position.

John Terry for me, he seems a solid team player and a great defender who can keep calm in a crisis (Trinidad line clearence, looked like he did it in training every day!!!)

I hate Chelsea mind!!!! Cardiff City thru and thru

Definitely Gerrard will be the best choice..with him as the captain of Liverpool is like an extra surge of strength..he keeps the team moving with his wonderful leadership quality...although he didn't managed to score the penalty (which I was quite surprised) but there's no one to be blamed for that because the game could go either way..as for Beckham, I think he should not have given up to the pressure of people not wanting him to be captain..England is shattered the moment Beckham is not on the field..remember World Cup 1998? I think with Beckham on the field the other day, Portugal would not have made it through..but, as the saying goes, the ball is round, any team can win..just hafto wait for another 4 more years til the next world cup then.. I would go for Terry, since he;'s the only one really performing on a regular base from the players mentioned. As long as the midfield doesn't match at England, despite the good names, I wouldn't go for any of them.

At least happy that Becks is out. Hope it won't stay with just the captaincy.

he said it all....

and Terry doesn't deserve to be the captain. He doesn't have the spirit and will of leadership on the pitch. Gerard controls the England team from the middle through offense and defense very well.

second choice shud be Gary Neville.
