25 FRIH$ - Build a $600 US Computer

alkady
I want you to build a $600.00 US computer excluding taxe. The one who can build one with the web link to each parts proving that their design cost no more than $600 US and is the best out of all wins.

It's not hard, Just go to as many sites you know, Make a design of a $600 Computer and show me the links of the parts. But since many will likely compete, Another winning factor is the quality, If you can make a computer that is not only better than the others and explain why. You win!!!!

You have till the 10th of July to make it. The contest ends when I log on that day.

: ) That the best tender wins.

EDIT: Post your entry here or send them to me by PM but do state on this board that you submitted a entry. It's more transparent that way. Also the contest goal is to build a computer for $600.00, With mouse, keyboard & speakers but no monitor.
TeenZine
Nice idea to bad I dont know anything about building computers.
Blaster
Yes my kind of contest. I can't wait to do this one. Can i pm you with mine so it is sacred. I will start on it some other time. Anyhow i think somone wants a new computer. Oh and some questions. Does this include monitior keyboard mouse speakers or just the tower? Sorry i need just a bit more info before i start out. The only hard part is staying under $600 but i think i can do it. Also does shipping play any catch on this?
alkady
^ Thats really up to you, You can post it here or send it to me, But do make sure you make a post here stating that you send your entry. It's more transparent that way.

And like I say, Build what you can for $600 USD, No Monitors. The whole point is to see what you can do for $600.00. You can use used or new parts. But make sure to include the source. It must include a mouse, keyboard & speaker.
Blaster
ok that made it harder. I found cases for like 120 dollars. Damn i would rather spend that on good stuff. oh well i will get on it. This sounds like fun.

pentium's suck ...amd is the way to go, everyone knows intel is not as good
Ratman2050
Hey I never built I computer, Im more of a programmer but anyways. Does anybody have a good link or sites to Building a nice home computer for just regular use, fast, nice, you know.
Also for building a laptop as well to run reasonable.
Thanks and much appreciated.
If this is not the place to post this I am sorry.
alkady
Anyways the Contest is closed, But I'm extending the entry because only one person entered with two entry, So it wouldn't be fair. That makes two people competing, Winner will be announced ASAP.

It is a matter of prefrence, not to mention supported tecnonlogies. I think AMD and intel are prettu matched up in the end. I know people will quote figure of speed and cache and other stuff, but in the end, the processor is only as good as the components supporting it and the person using it.

In a badly built mtherboard, AMDs will suck. Same goes for intels. The first computer I built was an AMD +2800 machine, and the second was a Pentium D 830 machine. They both worked fine for their use. I use the pentium machine for gaming, and I can run oblivion with all sliders up and all effects on, no slowdowns.

Additionally, AMDs used to be the cheap and viable alternative to Intel. That has changed. AMDs are way to expensive now, to the point where an intel setup is significantly less in cost. Build a machine with one of the FX processors, and it definately won't be under $600.

damn i forgot all about this contest. Oh well do i have like 3 days to still enter in thats all i really need.
alkady
Althrough I would award SquirrelMaster as the winner for incorporating style and long term needs, The winner is vln004 because he not only made his design to last for the long term with the arising need of better computers, He also did this for under $600.00. So congrats vln004.

do your research before you post. This pentium has two cores as opposed to the single core of the competing amd. Two cores are a higher clock speed might i add. Although it is true that amd has a lot of good processor, a dual core processor will be better performance wise then a single core.

Anyways, Please go read up on intel core 2 duos. They blow even the fastest AMD out of the water.

Question, So will all your computers be run on linux or windows? because if not linux, windows costs i think $88 OEM for the home edtion xp.

I know there are several cheaper alternatives for linux boxed distrobutions but just on that theres compatibility issues due to the fact that most software is either win/mac based.

And when u said long term do you mean 1 to 3 years?
alkady
Well I'm not referring to the OS, That anyone knows won't last. I was talking more about the Components.

it's easy to build your own desktop, much much harder to build yourself a laptop. Laptops have a lot of customized engineering that goes into it, I have yet to hear of someone who built their own.
mikethm
Actually it is very much possible to build your own notebook... of course your options are much more limited than building a desktop... here are some links...
