Defender Ludovic Magnin was in tears after Switzerland crashed out of the World Cup after a 3-0 penalty shootout defeat to Ukraine in the second round in Cologne on Monday.
''It's awful. It's so upsetting to lose like this but football is not always fair,'' said Magnin after the Swiss blew their chance to reach the last eight.
Ukraine goalkeeper Oleksandr Shovkovskyi saved two of Switzerland's three spot kicks while Tranquillo Barnetta hit the crossbar.
Magnin, who had delivered an accomplished performance, said Switzerland must regroup and now look ahead to the European Championship the country will host with neighboring Austria in 2008.
''We have achieved a lot and I think the whole of Switzerland is proud of us. Now we have to regroup and look forward to hosting Euro 2008.''
