A bit of a testimony... (Christian Talk Please)

Okay, if you are a non-believer and have some remarks, obviously I can't stop you from saying them, but please try to keep it down. And know that this is from a Christian point of view.

Okay, so my friend's church has Friday night prayer sessions where you go, pray, read Bible verses, listen to music and meditate a bit. Well, I don't attend their church and I thought a couple things were interesting:

1) Their church was lecturing on involving God in all of your decisions, and I have been struggling with some decisions recently. I thought it was odd that of all the days, the day I come they are talking about that.

2) I was told to read Acts 1:17-26 in regards to involving God in all of my decisions, but I accidently read Acts 2:17.

Acts 2:17
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

And lately I have been having almost prophetic dreams of Jesus' coming, God, and Christianity in general.

I thought it strange that I would open to that verse of all verses in the Bible.

That's cool too. Just another example:

A couple months ago, I was really down. I felt like everyone had abandonded me and I would cry out to God wondering why he would make me feel so bad.

One night, by chance, I grabbed my Bible, opened it to a random page and began reading. I just so happened to begin reading Joshua (and my name is Joshua, but that's not the point).

This is what I read:

Joshua 1:5
...I will never leave you nor forsake you

Joshua 1:9
Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord, your God, is with you wherever you go.

I thought it was odd that when I was feeling so seperated and adandoned from God, I would randomly open to those passages. Coincidence? I think not.

I know this well.. Last time we had a meeting with my community. We were all praying, and after that everyone of us took a little piece of paper with one verse of the Bible to think about. At this time I've been thinking that I should tell my boyfriend about my past relationships. I've done almost everything to forget about them as it hurted me a lot, but I had a feeling inside, that I should be totally sincere with him. After I desperately prayed God asking what I should do, I took one of these sheets of paper and got a quote from Ephesians:

Ephesians 4:25 wrote:
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.

Everytime I pray and open the Bible in a random place I find some personal advice, but this time I was totally shocked. Well, to be honest I haven't had that conversation yet, but I carry this piece of paper in my wallet to remember about it. Please wish me a good luck.Wink

^Good luck with your boyfriend, I'm sorry that you've been hurt.

But is it not an interesting phenomena? Or is the Bible just that universally applicable. It's always cool for me to grab the Bible, randomly open it, being reading, and then out of nowhere it's like the Bible knows my situation. Divine intervention Very Happy.

The Bible also speaks against divination which is, in effect, what someone would be doing if one decided to open his Bible randomly to determine the answer to a question or problem (cf. http://www.johnankerberg.org/Articles/new-age/NA0402W1.htm).

I still like the joke about this, where someone decides to find out what the Bible says he should to one day, so he opens his Bible to a random location, points his finger at a verse and it's Matthew 27:5, "And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself."

A bit confused, he decides to try again. This time, it's near the end of Luke 10:37, "Go, and do thou likewise."

He tries one more time. The middle of John 13:27, "That thou doest, do quickly."

You should search for the Jerusalem Bible, used most frequently by our neocatechumenal communities. It's a modern translation of the Bible from original languages, with large footnotes and many links from one verse to another. I have a little DOS programme using the Jerusalem Bible, that finds you a random quote from the Bible, and the links to the verses connected somehow with it. That way you could go from one verse to another, finding out even more. [I know that it seems much different if you open the Bible randomly on your own, than if a computer does it for you. But you could always find the quote personally, and start your linking from it . Very Happy]

Unfortunately I have only the Polish version of this programme, but if I find an english one, I'll send you the link.

I think your source is wrong, it actually praises Christians for their use of the Bible and condemns the occult diviners who seek the future.

I don't open up randomly and seek the future. I open the Bible to read God's word, and I happen to stumble across passages that make sense in my life - that's hardly divination. I don't go in with the intention of telling the future.

Surely someone would have much more sense than to go and hang themselves, funny joke, but it's a serious matter.
