Which one do you like and why ? Most of people who like dogs don't like cats. For me, I prefer dogs because they seem to be royal.
Becky
I love cats, and hate dogs......
I'm actually terrified of dogs because i got attacked by one when i was 5 and it stole my favourite shoe Laughing

Cats are cool because you dont have to walk them, they are nice to cuddle, and arent much bother apart from having to keep their food and water bowls full.
IceNinjaa
im a big fan of dogs...cats just dont cut it. they just lie around and do nothing in my opinion. i enjoy playing soccer with my dog. he just plays goalie and ill kick the ball at him. its a ball which got deflated so it wont hurt him and if the ball goes in the air he;ll jump for it.

he's just an awesome dog and is very playful..
Guyon
I agree. Dogs Rock! To bad I can't have either....... But every time i possibly can, I am near dogs. They just seem to be a lot cooler and more fun than Cats........ Just my personal opinion.......... Dogs can learn a LOT of cool tricks, and they Seem to be a lot more fun......

I don't know what to say, but I feel Dogs domanate Cats any day. Laughing

No Compairison (I know it is not spelled right, but you know what I mean...)

I guess I am just an animal lover cause I've had both and like both, but dogs are better companions. Cat's are good if you're gone alot, since they don't need alot of attention.
ashen
Hmm... I like both. But I love cats better than dogs. Its because almost all of my family love it and cats are so cute. I think they're not too dangerous like dogs (except wild cats and big cats).
em0o
I personally prefer a dog but since living on my own, I think a cat would be more managable. I think you should only take on what you can handle and personally, I think dogs you need to give way more attention than cats. Cats are more independent, loners i guess, while dogs have more needs. ie: walks, taken out to potty etc. I love dogs more than cats though.
Thundr n Lightning
I really like dogs, but there are some very affectionate cats, which I live very much. They are the type with the affection of a dog but the tidiness of a cat -- the best of both worlds Very Happy
HoboPelican
Cats.
Suits my temperment, I suppose. They come, they go, they dont depend on you for squat. Feels more like a companion than a worshiper Wink Speaking of squating, there is another reason why I like them. For some reason, I just feel like a fool standing by the side of a road with a baggie waiting for a dog to take a dump Laughing

Oddly, my four cats will go for walks with me most places. Each comes back to a seperate whistle, so they dont get to far away.

Not knocking dogs. Ive had a couple, but I keep getting cats.
Tatsumaru
I like both. I used to like cats more, but my girlfriend has a really funny and cute dog so it kind of changed my opinion. Cats you can't really pet as they seem to be more shy (still they're cool to look at), and most dogs seem to like attention.

So yeah, both. If I'd pick for myself I'd probably say a cat, so that I don't have to walk the dog hehe Very Happy
jasmine
I like dogs since they are so loyal and friendly compared to cats.

But don't get me wrong, I like cute cats.

As a matter of fact, as long as they are cute, I like them both! LOL

I like both but I prefer to have a dog because it is very loyal and everytime I came home at night they are always exited to see me. Right now I have 3 dogs, 2 are just local breed dogs and 1 is a labrador.

Dogs also serve's as a security guard during night time and I dont think cats can do that. Cat's sometimes are very disturbing specially when they are doing their love making retual Laughing they are really noisy during night time.
Arnie
I don't like dogs, first of all because of all the sh*t they produce. You're walking on the grass, and voila another shoe wasted. Secondly, their gasping is weird. At least cats just lie around everywhere all the time, which is great because whenever you just walk into them every now and then. I have two very cute cats btw! Smile
matttai
i like dogs because they are alot more approachable.
you do have a point about them making alot more mess but with good training they can be just as clean as cats!
bonestorm74
I like cats as they're not as obtrusive as dogs. Whenever I go to my inlaws their dog jumps all over you, slobbers on your leg etc etc. Gets on my nerves.

Cats tend to be a lot more my style I guess. They're not all over you.
m_furquan36
Cats are so elegent and cute to be around and in general very clean animals Smile dogs on the other hand are kind of big messy and difficult to take care of Razz

Day 183 of my captivity...
My captors continued to taunt me with bizarre little
dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat,
while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing
that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the
mild satisfaction I get from clawing the furniture.
Tomorrow I may eat another house plant.

Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around
their feet while they were walking almost succeeded -
must try this at the top of the stairs.

In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile
oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on
their favorite chair - must try this on their bed.

Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body
in an attempt to make them aware of what I am capable
of, and to try to strike fear in their hearts. They
only cooed and condescended about what a good little
cat I was. Hmmm, not working according to plan.

There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices.
I was placed in solitary throughout the event.
However, I could hear the noise and smell the food.
More important, I overheard that my confinement was
due to my powers of inducing "allergies." Must learn
what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and
maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and
seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a
half-wit.

The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an
informant and speaks with them regularly. I am certain
he reports my every move. Due to his current placement
in the metal room, his safety is assured. But I can
wait; it is only a matter of time.

I dunno why but i like cats better.
Ratman2050
Cats are way better beacuse they are more reliable and easy to use. Lol. Well first of all they arent big and sometimes mean like dogs, they dont slobber over you like dogs, they dont rush to you all the time, they dont bark all the time, they take little neccesities unlike dogs, they dont make too much of a mess, and i am terrified of some dogs!!!

You all know I'm a cat person (dogs are cool, too...) but I gotta set the record straight. While she's not as bad as a some dogs, one of my cats will start drooling whenever I pet her! Kinda cute, but some cats DO drool.

pennymellow
I love all animals. I'm a bit of a nature freak in that respect. Cats, dogs...they all have their pros and cons.

I've noticed that, while cat lovers rarely express distaste in dogs, dog lovers often vehemently hate cats. Why is that?

I love dogs. Actually I have one at home. If I were to choose again, still it would have been a dog.

pennymellow wrote:

That's a prety good question. I dont really know, but how about this....

Cat lovers, in general, accept a cat as it is. Not looking for performance or obediance, just to share their home with another creature. Dog lovers want a worker, play pal, constant companion, etc. and work with the dog to achieve that. A dog lover looks at a cat and says "cant be trained, aint good for nothing". A cat lover sees a dog as another animal, just not as pretty, regal, calm, etc.

What ya'll think?
pennymellow
Good point, HoboPelican. I'm inclined to agree. Dog lovers do seem to have higher expectations from a pet.

Sometimes owners take on the traits of certain animals, too. I'm a cat, coming and going as I please. My last boyfriend is a dog, terribly loyal once he's decided he likes you. Could those similarities be the appeal?

I know a young woman who's husband is most definately a dog man. He seems to require complete dedication from his peers and loves to be the centre of attention, the one in charge. It's possible that that's why he prefers dogs over cats. In this case, a dog suits his personality.
azrael85
I've always been a cat person myself
m00tmuffin
I've always been around both, but I just love cats more. There are some really awesome dogs I've met/had over the years but cats seem to have more of a...deep? personality, or something like that. /grin

They just seem a bit more intelligent and my cat, at least, is so much like me it's creepy.
ncwdavid
dogs are way cool than cats. cats just wake up and go away for the day and than come back for some food. Dogs are way more fun because you can train them to do cool stuff and there more fun to have. Cats just go around licking themselves!

What, does your dog use toilet paper? Laughing At least cats can be trained to use a toilet, although they tend to not flush. Wink

I actually like both, although I might have to choose cats over dogs as a pet to actually own. Cats are so much more independent which is nice because they will get on with their lives without constant attention. That's not to say that dogs can't be great fun too though.
imera
I like both, I have also had both.
When I were younger we had six dogs and maybe 20 cats, but they were for the mostly wild.

Another dog lover/cat hater Wink I think we just might have a case for cat lovers being more tolerant people in general, what ya think?
pennymellow
Cat people certainly can't afford to be demanding. Have you ever tried to boss a cat around? Wink

In defense of cats, they are terribly clean. Here are a few exerpts from Pawprints and Purrs, Inc.:

Quote:
Why do cats spend so much time grooming?

The typical cat devotes about a third of his waking day to grooming himself. Considering how many hours he devotes to sleep, this may not sound like much, but it translates to about three hours' worth of self-pampering a day. There are several reasons why he grooms himself so fastidiously. Cats clean themselves with their saliva, which is thought to contain a detergent-like deodorizing substance that keeps his coat soft, glossy, and clean. But grooming also has other important functions: it removes dead hair and skin, tones up the muscles and stimulates blood circulation. This is also why mother cats clean their newborns so frequently.

Quote:
Why does a cat's tongue feel like sandpaper?

To the cat, the sandpaper feeling tongue is a vital tool. The little prickly things covering the upper surface of the tongue are called papillae, and has hundreds of small backward pointing protuberances constructed of virtually the same substance as human fingernails. The cat uses his tongue like a comb to give himself an extra deep cleaning so that he leaves no odor to warn prey as he sneaks upon it...

Yeah, I thought it might be associated with hunting behavior, but I wasn't sure. Thanks for the reference! Wink

You know, I love my cats and the peace they bring, but isn't it amazing what incredibly efficient killing machines they are? The claws, teeth, reflexes, senses? These guys are just barely domestic. Smile
pennymellow
I agree, HoboPelican. In a way, cats remind me of pidgeons, seagulls, and other birds that have grown used to being fed by humans--they're not domesticated, but they know a good thing when they see it.

One of my cats, a sobby little persian, is rarely ever seen and it not particularly affectionate. When she is, it's on her terms. It's almost as though she's saying "I'm here because I want to be. I let you pet me because I want to be petted. I can leave any time I want."
CCFCExile
Dogs are definatly more loyal but harder work and can hinder any plans of day's out or holidays. Cats arn't very loyal and 'use' their human owners for a place to sleep, eat and be spoilet but don't need walking or too much attention.

Dogs for me Im proud to say

I'm guessing you don't like cats much. Actually, in my experience, most cats WILL come out and look for you. Typically, whenever I sit down, one of our cats will come and jump in my lap. With very few exceptions, the cats Ive had are very attentive. I think it is all in the attention you give them, just like a dog. If you ignore or push away a dog or a cat they will likely ignore you (except for those perverse ones that just try harder Laughing ). If you reward it (pet, talk to , play with), it probably will come on its own whenever it can.
ItsWesley
I prefer cats a lot more than dogs, mainly because they are so cuter! But also cats are less demanding, all you need to do is feed them, clean their catlitter and give them lots of affection and love.
The only problem I have with my cat is that her fur gets everywhere...
simp
dogs rule, cats drool!
(Okay, I like cats too, but dogs really love you. Cats really love themselves.)
pennymellow
A question for those of you who believe that cats are less loyal than dogs, or that they are "users": have you ever kept a cat? I'll be the first to admit that I addressed a lack of loyalty in my one of my posts, but I was referring to a very independent quality that seems to exude from these creatures, a certain wildness that thousands of years of domestication has not slowly stiffled.

As they are primarily lone hunters in the wild, it's understandable that even domesticated cats sometimes seem to have little time for social interaction, but this aloofness is certainly not a matter of lack of loyalty! Why, when one of my cats happens to 'misplace me', he will walk from one end of the house to the other, crying until he finds me. He is always in the same room as me, to the extent that I have to carry on of his two fur-covered blankets from room to room; it's inevitable that he will join me once he's caught wind that I have left the room.

HoboPelican wrote:

This is the very root of the point. Dogs and cats have very different natures. Unlike cats, dogs will learn certain behaviour for the joy of learning something new and of pleasing their pack mate. That does not mean that cats do not want to learn fancy tricks--they simply need a little encouragment. The same is true of winning a cat's affection: love it, be gentle with it, interact with it on it's own terms (this is very important because cats don't like to be smothered) and it will eventually come to you.

Some people may argue that the fact that a cat needs to be encouraged to please you means that the cat is not loyal or not as friendly. Ridiculous! Have any of you ever seen or kept a ferret? It's impossible to get a ferret to do anything without treats and constant attention. Does that make a ferret any less loyal or less friendly than a dog? Absolutely not. When one of my two ferrets escaped from his cage and found himself next door at the mercy of their two dogs, the poor thing hid. However, as soon as he saw me he slowly creeped out from his hiding place and right in to my arms.

I hope my tangent did not throw any of you off. I am simply saying that, before you judge cats in the terrible manner that dog-lovers tend to judge cats, consider the nature of the animal. It's not a matter of loyalty and love, but a matter of instinct.

im a cat person..why do i luv cats over dogs..coz they're smaller,adorable,cute n cute

I am assuming that by "sitting around" you are referring to a cat's want to sleep all day. I may be way off track here and apologise if that is the case.

Cats need to be stimulated, too. They need toys and play time and a lot of love, just like dogs. If they don't have lots of things to play with they may get bored, so they'll sleep.

On the subject of sleep, cats sleep a lot because the protein-rich diet of the cat does not require much investment of time, and allows plenty of time for napping; that's their nature.

As for waiting for food, you'll find that that's not the case. A cat will quite happily eat if food is put down for him but, unless it's his usual feeding time, he probably won't say a thing.

You tell 'em, Pennymellow!

As to sleep, I was thinking that my parents dogs slept a lot also so I did a quick google. Looky what I found...
Quote:
How much do dogs and cats sleep? Under controlled laboratory conditions both cats and dogs sleep about 13 hours per day but they wake up more frequently than people do.

So much for cats sleeping more than dogs. At least until somebody finds a better reference!

Dogs and cats are just different.

I've always had dogs, and currently have a 6 yr old female yellow lab.
She is the most loving and gentle dog I've ever seen.

Then I saw a 6 year old Norwegian Forrest Cat at the humane shelter and he just had to go home with me. He follows me around the house like a dog. Has at least 2 dozen vocalizations that he chortles and sings to me. I swear he can say 'hello', 'yes', 'mama', and several other words. I've been teaching him how to say 'uck you'. He's done it about a dozen times. He comes on command and will sit on command, but he's not too keen about shaking hands. He will once in a while if I hold my hand upside down and will rest his on the back of my hand. He weighs almost 18#, and is the coolest cat I've ever met.

Very cool. My wife seems to be able to teach cats to be talkers also. About that many vocalizations, but Id be stretching if I the cat could make recognizable words, although you could see her cats trying. They DID have conversations. The cat would listen until my wife finished (so polite!) and then maomaomeweowmamao, sometimes immitating my wife, sometimes not. Her new cat is doing the same thing now. Ive flat out told her to NOT talk to MY cat. Very Happy My cat and I relate visually with a few whistles ad I want it to stay like that....

BTW - That is a very nice looking feline. Glad you found each other.

I prefer cats. They are much smarter than dogs. I know that dogs seems to be clever too, but look at them. They run everywhere you throw something like idiots and are always tiding the floor with their tongue:) The cats on the other site are calm and seems very lazy, but they are just watching their enviroment and they are looking for the threat around them. They are very aware and they looks like qeeuns in the nature. It´s a very nobless animal.

I prefer cats. Simply because, I’m afraid of dogs... T__T Well, not all the time but most of the time. I think they’re cute but I’m scared they’re going to bite me.

Throughout my lifetime (working on 64 years now) I've had the privilege of being owned by many cats. I have the fond illusion of knowing a bit about cats now, but I'm sure that the present sharer of my RV and my life (a fluffy gray and white Maine Coon named Princess Purrrfect) will prove me wrong many times before my race is run.

There is no more soothing sound than a cat purring near my ear, unless it's rain on the roof. A dog constantly barking is one of the most irritating, especially when I'm trying to sleep. I live in RV campgrounds, where your next-door neighbor can be 20 feet away.

Cats are easy to take care of. I change her litterbox every couple of days, make sure she has food and water, comb her frequently, and play with her a bit every day. In return, she purrs, amuses me a lot with her antics, provides me with good company, and comforts me during my rare periods of melancholy.

Dang, someone older than me! Amazing. Very Happy

As to the sound of a purr vs a bark, I have this to add....

I used to live out in BFE between a set of railroad tracks and a guy who kept coon hounds. Many times I'd wake to the sound of a freight train rumbling by and I'd smile and go back to sleep. And sometimes the neighbors hounds would let out a mounful, deep rolling howl and, again, I'd smile and roll back to sleep. However, the sound that drove me up the freakin' wall was my dumba** neighbor sticking his head out of the window and yelling at his hounds at the top of his lungs to "Shut the f**k up, you d*mn dogs!"

well I really love cats, but i can't say that they're better than dogs, or that dogs are better than cats.. I just think that it depends on each person's personality and lifestyle..

for example, i live in a small house with no garden, so having a dog would be so annoying, barking all the time inside the house..

while having a cat is just great Smile she's with me all the time... so cats can be very loyal ah Wink?! I just think they are loyal in a very different way than dogs Smile

I've always been a dog person. I grew up with dogs. Whether they are trained or not, they all are loyal. On top of that, I love their childish and playful minds.

I'm ok with cats, but I think they are too proud. They never think that we are their boss, not even a friend.

Smart dogs do what you tell them to do.
Smart cats won't do those things. They always sit back and relax, look down on those stupid dogs. Very Happy

Its a hard call this one, I lovedogs for their unquestioning loyalty, how they come to you on request and seem to offer more interaction n stuff, but cats can come close you know.
My cat used to sense when i was sad and come sit on my lap and rub her head into me purring and almost trying to cheer me up.
OK, cats will often just ignore you, and they certainly always do their own thing whatever it is, I will say though, that when a cat chooses to come to you, it means more than a dog doing it in my mind, because they actually choose it. Dogs on the other hand seem to just like whoever feeds and walks them - i dont know, but cats are definately easier to look after!

i think cats are better for all these reasons:
- cats are more cleaner
- they won't eat your keys or your money
- cat's are calm but some of them are so crazy and u will have fun playing with it and u won't need to go outside so u can play
- cat's don't eat much and thier food is not expensive
- cat's don't lick
- they don't make much noise all the time

I agree with HoboPelican's theory.

However, I deem myself and my aunt exceptions to that.

For starters, my aunt loves dogs above all else, she's like the one-person rescue squad for them (since in China animal have about zilch rights) but being that, she doesn't mind cats either. In fact, she rescued a pregnant cat and the mother and kittens (now adults) loved her as much as she loved them. they were abnormally obedient, loyal, and people-loving. The male offspring likes it when she pats/hugs/etc him and he tags along with my aunt where ever she goes (he'd lay on the desk when my aunt's on the computer and so on)

For me, when I was little, I grew up around cats and I liked em although they didn't very much like me *sweatdrops* I especially liked them as a kid because they were cuter and more elegant looking than sloppy dogs. But then I got a dog (a pomeranian, yeah I had to go for pretty even with dogs) and I love him to death <3 So now I can say that I'm more of a dog person than a cat person. But I still like cats =D they are cool and standoffish because thats just how they are, dogs and cats each have their pros and cons. I actually plan on having 2 dogs and a cat later when I get my own house XD

When I was single, I had 4 cats that would go for walks with me. I taught each cat to come to a different whistle, so if they strayed to far, I could always bring him/her back. It was pretty funny. Two of them were actually pretty good at playing fetch. Smile

cats just need a REASON to listen to you Wink

i'll go with dogs any day. they're loyal, friendly, u can tell what they feel from their behaviour! they're much more attached to their master then cats.
cats on the other hand will stay at a house just because they get fed there. and because they're mostly kept inside of course Very Happy i live in a countryside, and i know people who "have" cats, but the thing is they only see them for feeding. the rest of the day they just wonder around and come back when they're hungry. that much for a pet! Razz dogs, of course, are guardians!

Cats are independant.

Dogs are dependant.

Hence dog lovers are typically insecure and require a relationship (personal, occupational etc) based on having to control something easily controllable and equally dependant.

Cat lovers are secure enough to engage in relationships which require trust and the ability to keep a relationship going based on individual desires and needs.

Me? I love 'em both. Wink

Could someone please explain to me why getting attacked by an animal at a young age traumatizes people so much? I've gotten attacked by both dogs and cats multiple times during my young years:

Mauled by a dog at 3.
Face and back scratched up by a friend's cat at 5.
Flight from a dog when my family tried to make me ride it; I was around 3.
Almost lost an eye to my cat; I think I was 5 or 6.
Got pissed on by a dog at the age of 7 when I wasn't looking.

The list goes on. However, I never got mad at/scared of the whole species when one animal attacked me. In fact, I always make gains to approach animals to make them fonder of me. Thats why I love both dogs and cats. Dogs are great because they're awesome play mates. Cats are great because they do amazing stuff and are just loving animals. Whether or not an animal is fun to be around all depends on how you treat them.
Obviously, if you keep picking up a cat by its hind legs, squeeze its face, and start screaming into their face whilst spitting "Who's a coochie coochie coo kitty witty wuvly cat?!", they're going to try to stay away from you all day and make it seem like they don't do anything. And trying to chase the cat down will make it worse. Let the cat make an approach. And don't do anything that will pull the cat from having control of its own body.
The primary reason people seem to not like dogs is because they either seem dangerous or are messy. Being messy is a matter of either training them or not minding it. Thats why they're good play mates: when you play, you don't mind getting messy, and neither do they. Being dangerous is the same as cats avoiding you. Make the right approach, and you have nothing to worry about. And even if they were trying to hurt you, they can't really do anything. They're dogs! Not wolves.
Probably the most important tip when approaching an unfamiliar dog or cat is to let the animal know that you're friendly. What I find most effective is to lower yourself to the animal's level, make a slow approach, and don't make sudden movements. Let the animal smell you so they can register you and then proceed to pet them, etc.
But back to the point, so far I've preferred cats. I've had a brother my whole life that I could play around with and therefore didn't need a best friend relationship that a dog provides. However, my cat always gave me the caring love I needed. I remember there wasn't a single time I was hurt either physically or emotionally that my cat didn't come to console me. And even when my brother wasn't around, my cat made a great playmate too.

I prefer cat's over dogs, There not as annoying. You don't need to take them for walks or anything. The only thing about cats is that they shed all over the place which isn't a good thing if some people have allergies and it can be a pain to clean the Litter Box.

I like both. I also have the best kind of each.

The cat is called "notma" because he actually belongs to the next door neighbour. Say it out loud "notma cat". He prefers my company and spends all day lounging about in my yard and then goes home when he's hungry. Beat that!

The dog belongs to my aunt. I visit every couple of days and take him for a walk. He's well trained, well behaved and even more unfit than me. We are matched quite well because we both have legs full of stainless steel pins and walk just at the right speed for each other. When walkies is over I hand him back and go home.

No vet bills and all the benefits of pet ownership.

Of course, the lack of responsibility for cats or dogs doesn't allow for the quail, rat and two guinea pigs that share our house. We did have a cat but she died last year.

I read the same thing about pigs back in college. Just because they aren't cuddly and taste great, we consider them livestock!

The whole intelligence thing is sort of funny. We still argue about how to measure intelligence in humans, so how are we gonna measure it in another species? In humans, they are saying that there isn't just one type of intelligence, but many (verbal, math, spatial, kinesthetic, etc) so that one can excel at one and be deficient at others (makes some sense). I imagine it is the same with critters.

So, which is smarter, the dog who will do tricks for food or the cat who thinks "screw this, open the door and I'll feed myself"? No real answer. I think it's more important to just realize what you want from a pet and get one that works for you.

Really? I question it quite easily. As I said before, intelligence is hard to measure and there is more than one aspect to it. I won't argue that dogs are more willing to perform tricks to make the alpha dog (the owner)happy, but that possibly has more to do with dogs being a pack animal than overall intelligence.

So if you want a pet that will do tricks for you without much work, you should get a dog. But don't call it ithat ntelligence Wink

I am a "cat man" myself. Nothing wrong with dogs - I just hate it when the jump mud all over my new pants! Maybe i just need to lighten up a little? Laughing Cats have grace and subtleties that dogs dont have, and they make great snugglers! Dogs are cool too, and at least they get excited when you come home. My wife and I had a dwarf rabbit for a time, but it was never excited to see you, it just sat in its cage and shivvered with fear whenever we were around! So we gave it back to the shop! Maybe we were just bad owners?

Anyway, cats it is!

In my opinion I think you are selfish and also mean then you do not like children and real friends.

She doesn't like children or friends? I don't see that implied anywhere. I also don't think she was implying that she takes no responsibility towards them. I think what she was saying is simply that cats need less upkeep than dogs. You don't need to walk them, just clean a cat box when needed. Cats, in general, seem to be able to amuse themselves just fine without human intervention (of course, if it's an indoor cat, that amusement might not amuse their owner! Laughing )

Anyway, to call Becky mean and selfish is quite a leap.

I've noticed that, while cat lovers rarely express distaste in dogs, dog lovers often vehemently hate cats. Why is that?

That's a prety good question. I dont really know, but how about this....

Cat lovers, in general, accept a cat as it is. Not looking for performance or obediance, just to share their home with another creature. Dog lovers want a worker, play pal, constant companion, etc. and work with the dog to achieve that. A dog lover looks at a cat and says "cant be trained, aint good for nothing". A cat lover sees a dog as another animal, just not as pretty, regal, calm, etc.

What ya'll think?

In my experience dog lovers who hate cats, like dogs because they’re relatively easy to dominate. Dogs are wired to exist in a pack and they accept being dominated by the pack leader. The way to get into a cat’s head is to realize that he doesn’t need you the way a dog needs to be part of a pack. Cats are self sufficient and they choose to be with you because they find you interesting. They learn through observation and mimicking and they see humans as big, slow but clever cats, that’s why they’re so curious. When they watch you doing something they’re trying to figure out how they’re going what you’re doing. They also have super senses and the reason they look down on some people is because their brain might be smaller than ours but physiologically they’re a far superior design. Cat lovers like giving animals their space to be what they were created to be. Dog lovers who hate cats have a need to be superior to something and expect animals to behave according to their will. I suppose it boils down to respect and acceptance versus possession and control.

I don’t mean to offend anyone I’m just thinking out loud, any ideas?

Hey everyone

All animals are great! I currently have a cat and a hamster. I did have a dog but he died about a month ago... the best dog in the world! He was mixed with probably every breed you can think of, small and fit through a cat flap! He reached 13 which is pretty good for something which may be classed as a terrier! I love cats too but dogs are probably a favourite for most as you can do things with them like walking... errr, actually my dog didnt do much else hehehe!

My hamster is great and has recently worked out how to climb the ceiling of his cage. He has escaped once and it took quite a while to catch him as he is a very fast little guy!

Why do fair ground goldfish only live a week compared to years for a petshop version...?

I love dogs for many reasons. When people and dogs do things together it is good news all around. Many of these activities provide the structure that helps people learn to better communicate with their dogs. The dogs have a better opportunity to learn good manners. That makes them easier to live with and less likely to be given up. The activities help people get in touch with one another to share information. That also helps people to learn about dogs, to avoid problems, and to solve them in a healthy way. The activites provide exercise in a fun way that boosts the relationship. The exercise, in turn, reduces boredom. A dog that exercises with its human is less likely to have behavior problems. A wonderful side benefit is that these activities can be a mental boost for humans and dogs alike.

Have a nice dog oops i mean day

What is disgusting about a cat? Typically, they are much cleaner than any other pet. I can understand someone not liking them, but hating them? Seems bit extreme. Why do you hate them so? Did you get scratched as an infant?

it's just a question with what you're raised up with, if you had a dog all your life you'll tend do dogs, and if you had a cat all your life, you'll tend to cats, and when you have one you'll always will say you like that one better because it's either obiedient and loyal, or has it's own will and is lazy as hell..

I would have to say that dogs as a whole are more fun and more enjoyable. As little ones cats are easier to care for and probably are more fun to play with, but as they get into adult life dogs definitely are more people oriented and faithful. That is if they have been trained and have learned some sort of obedience.

Speaking of obedience training, how difficult or different is it in trying to train or teach cats vs dogs?

I used to love cats, but then I became highly allergic to them, so I've had to convince myself that I don't like them. It's been about 23 years now, and I think it's starting to take.

I like dogs, but my dog is too loud. When I got him, he had just arrived from a long car ride from Virginia to Massachusetts. He was 6 weeks old and the runt. He was very quiet, but it turns out that was just because he was tired.

As it happens, he's a mix of a Walker hound and a black lab, and the hound in him makes him quite noisy. Not only does he bark, but he barks a lot. And his hound bark is just about one of the loudest barks I've ever heard.

Oh well. At least I know when someone is approaching my house from miles away. Smile

I like both cats and dogs. I thought long and hard but can't pick one over the other.

I grew up with dogs but learnt to respect cats for the way they go through life as the boss.

Dogs do as they are told and love you, cats tell you what to do and put up with you (of course they can be loving too).

You have to love both species for their different takes on life.

I have a cat like that. His name is Renfield, because he eats bugs. (Dracula, anyone?) He looks like a grey teddy bear. Here is a picture - http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l165/irksomekitty/Cats/Renfield.jpg - he looks grouchy because he doesn't like the flash on the camera.

I am acquainted with a cat-hating dog lover who picks this cat up and cuddles him, baby talks to him and generally fusses over him when she comes over, if that tells you anything.

Anyway, he is probably one of the stupidest creatures ever to live, but he's very friendly. Almost TOO friendly, in fact, when guests come over he meows at them incessantly until they say hello and pet him. Then he jumps into people's laps, purring idiotically, and if he really likes them, he drools on them, just like a dog. Oh, and did I mention he weighs 18 pounds? It's funny when he jumps up on somebody, as long as it's not me , it's like having somebody drop a furry bowling ball in your lap. Laughing

A cat can be great for a smaller space or if you aren't home all the time.
A dog is great if you need more companionship and like to go on walks/runs etc. They type of dog would be of interest here too. IE.. A smaller dog might require less space but they tend to be yappy and annoy the neighbors.

It depends on where you live and how much time you can devote to your pet. Dogs require a lot of attention and exercise while cats can ignore you for long periods of time and require very little exercise.

They both need medical attention but I think the dogs I've had have been more expensive than the cats overall.

If that man had had a dog, the dog would have attacked the cats for eating him. Dogs are loyal! Cats are spoil!

Hah! Go to Google and type "dog eats owner". LOL. You will get plenty of examples of dogs eating owners. Example:http://www.nbc10.com/news/3378490/detail.html

I still think its interesting that dog lovers usually hate cats and cat lovers usually like either, but simply prefer cats. To me, this says that cat lovers are animal lovers in general. Dog lovers also tend to have serious misconceptions about cats...and have no interest in hearing that they are wrong.

Oh well, for me the difference between picking up dog doodoo twice daily versus cleaning out a cat box occasionally is only one of the many advantages of cats. Smile But different strokes, right?
