i just got a new dell e1505 1.83GHz core duo with 1gb ram 100gb hard drive ati radeon x1400 mobility. wireless and bluetooth.

ive played around a little bit with ubuntu. and thats the basis of my linux experience. i just don't know which would be best for my set up. i've heard the following a lot.

ubuntu
kubuntu
mandriva
fedora
suse
knoppix
and gentoo

which should i choose that enables dual core support just fine and seems to be compatible with the hardware in my laptop?

knoppix

knoppix is a live cd, and it is not recommended to actually install it (yes, it is possible). What I recommend you is to use Debian, more packages, and... where do you think the *ubuntu 's came from? Wink just use testing instead of stable to get the latest versions.

if you are not a beginner, or you want to learn something more, choose gentoo.

I highly recommend the SuSE 10.0 Linux, if you are sure enough to play around with just linux, which comes in a DVD. It is best suited in your case and it is easier to use too. Its many features. some of them are even better than Windows Xp and Red Hat, makes it the OS of choice.
You may check out a post all about the SuSE linux on my blog:

...and I highly recommend searching reading the forum rules and searching the forum before starting what amounts to a duplicate topic. As a matter of fact, the discussion of which Linux to choose is the very first "sticky" thread at the top of this forum.
