Ubuntu Kernels
Kernel is the central core of the OS. It handles all the really important low level stuff like Input/Output, memory allocation etc etc
If it's asking you for a version number use the highest unless you know you have a good reason not to. Note that 2.6.9 is LOWER than 2.6.10 despite what decimal theory tells you.
