when someone goes to sign-up, everything works fine, but the activation link that is given to them in there e-mail doesn't work. please help.

Please post the script being used (relevant parts only!) so we can look at what you have 
It's for php-nuke though.
Maybe this is something that needs to be configured? Have you looked through all of the config files.
You might want to eMail the guys at PHPNuke to see what they can do (as it's their software). Be sure to check if they have any newer versions of their software and if there are any bugs (like that one maybe) to see if it is being worked on. Good luck with it.
