I think three songs of all time is a bit too hard to narrow down. But three bands... that's do-able.
The best, in my opinion, is the Beatles. They produced many great songs. A lot of their earlier "pop"ier works attracted me in my youth, and I've come to appreciate their other work even more. As mentioned before, A Long and Winding Road is spectacular, but I'm not sure if it's my favorite. The recent press coverage (due to Paul McCartney's birthday) brings "When I'm 64" to mind. I'm looking back over my Beatles collection as I write this post, and I don't think it's possible to pick a "best" song. Among those that have entranced me the most, though, are "A Day in the Life," "A Fool On the Hill," "Eleanor Rigby," and "Blackbird." That list is hardly exhaustive though - I'd rather listen to the Beatles catalog for the rest of my life than anything else.
Second on the list, after the Beatles, would be Pink Floyd. It's so mellow and exotic. I could listen to it all day. There are many good songs (and perhaps some not so good ones) - "Another Brick in the Wall," "Time," "Money," and "Comfortably Numb." I was just listening to "The Great Gig in the Sky," though, and there is just something about the female solo in the song.
Lastly (I would place John Lennon's solo work here, but for the sake of diversity we'll say that he is included in "The Beatles" more generally), Led Zeppelin pulls in third. Some of their work is just weird (and bad), and some is over-commercialized\over-played (Stairway to Heaven anyone?), but overall their catalogue is superb. Their music is soothing and natural; they fit in well with the Beatles and Pink Floyd, in my opinion, bringing the right amount of the general tone of 60's/70's music and the right amount of originality.
There's a lot of music that I love, but I think that these three bands are definitely my favorite. If I had to choose three bands to listen to for eternity, and no others, these three would take the cake.
- Walkere
my favorites at the moment are
Sugar - Ladytron
Brave New World - Covenant
Genesis - VNV Nation
