It is time for the German soccer referee Markus Merk to go (be forced) into retirement.
In the worst refereed game of the tournament by far, one brutal player-injuring non-called foul led directly to a goal by Ghana and one clearly wrong penalty goal call against a USA defender by Merk gave Ghana the win as a 2-1 referee's gift over the USA at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. This terrible performance followed an almost equally subpar refereeing job by Merk in his previously refereed game of Australia against Brazil.
In this disastrous form, the sometimes all-too controversial Merk has no business refereeing World Cup games.
In addition, since Merk is significantly involved in helping a 3rd world country off the field, he should not be refereeing games such as this involving 3rd world countries because of a potential, if also subliminal, conflict of interest and the thus potentially resulting biased refereeing.
