I'm wondering what's great about your country.

Tell me all the good stuff Razz (or the bad stuff Wink )

I live in Norway and it has it's ups and down's.
For example: Norway is one of the richest countries in the world, but it does have some of the highest tax and gas prices in the world too though.

Well, I'm from the US, so I expect (and will tolerate) any US-bashers, but I honestly think that one of the things that make the US great is it's diversity. And I don't mean from a corporate "Human Resources" point of view. I think our strength comes the fact that people from all over the world came (and come) here to escape oppression, poverty, stagnation, whatever. I think that is a great pool of people to add to a population.

And, please, don't bring up the current issues with Mexico. Whether we close the border or not is something for the future and not appropriate to this thread.

America's Minuses: Our idiot president and that the majority of people actually think he's a good president and follow his every move, not understanding the meaning of open-mindedness; the ever increasing number of fast food joints and the coincidental amount of ever increasing obesity; the complete ignorance of people; the concerned parents who want to ban EVERYTHING and the FCC which agrees with them; the idea that the same exact majority follows where America is the police of the world and so on...

Hungary is a very small country. We don't have much resources. (We had before; we even had three seas once! But that's an other story.)
But we have one thing that the rest of the world can count on: we have brains!
Yes, we are clever. Name an invention and I will name a hungarian who invented it or participated in the invention from ball-point pen to electric locomotive or from carburator to hologram... even the nuclear bomb!

I often don't like post like this because it assumes that you think you're country is great and often times you lose site of the things that are wrong with your country. Your country is what you make of it, and believe me if there is anyone who is able to speak candidly about their country then they cannot argue with this point.

My response to your question. I like the fact that there is no official language of the U.S. (one of the only non-subjective facts about the U.S.) To dig a little deeper I like the fact that this is supposed to symbolize that the government cannot tell you what language to speak, this is in the same spirit as the constitution which was designed to protect the people from the government, not the other way around.

The Philippines has been a beautiful country and has been a part of the world history... in fact, my country has been closely related to the US. Home of some most famous sceneries and historical places in SE Asia, my country is also the home of the most hospitable and generous people. One of the best trait I admire most about Filipinos is the "close family ties".

But sad to say, Philippines' good images has been covered by the dusts and muds brought about by politics...

Since the bad was part of the request, let's see...I think the US school system is getting to be problematic. We not only need to better compensate teachers to attract good people, but I am really amazed at all the "new ideas" school boards try out without proper evaluations. In effect, the students are just lab rats.

Just curious, what are the laws there currently (and is it nationwide or local)? Where I live, it is unlawful to smoke within 50 feet of a public building, even bars.
Bondings
Smoking in offices and in public places is forbidden since like 1 year ago (finally), but not in the restaurants/pubs/tea-rooms/bars.

What I rather mean is when you are waiting for the bus while it is raining outside and there comes a hard-core smoker sitting next to you forcing you to either face the smell and cancer or go outside and get totally wet and a cold.

Both the gay marriage and smoking laws are nationwide.

Good:- We Indians have a solution for every problem. Also, we really can make high technological products at very less cost. For eg. our super computer Param. We have 'Paradise on Earth' in the form of Kashmir. We have many beaches. Most of climatic zones exist here - Hot Desserts,Cold Mountains,Highest rainfall in Leh,very less rainfall in Thar Desert. Extreme temperature variations in some place to no temperature change in other.
And many other things which just cant be written in such short time.

Bad:- Our politicians, Corruption in government departments.

Yeah, that can be a drag. But, and I am dreaming here, I see a place where people don't need laws to behave civilly. A place where blithering into your cell phone at a theater wouldn't even be considered. A place where, when you see a mile of stopped cars in the right lane and sign saying "left lane closed", you get in the correct lane and not zoom down the left lane and force your way in at the end. Yes, a place where laws to enforce common courtesy are not needed, because the people are not so self-involved that all they can think about is their own petty little lives.

I see land where we don't have to enact laws to act civilised. I see Freedonia. Where rudeness is a deportable offense (ok, we had to make a law for this, but that's it!). All hail Freedonia!

This is a very long article. I received it as an e-mail from my former high school teacher and I just want to share it with you people. I think this article captures many of the great, unusual, and fun things about my home country and our culture, the Philippines.

I hope you could all finish reading this long but great article. Thanks!

Quote:
The following is from a British journalist stationed in the Philippines. His observations are so hilarious!!!! This was written in 1999.

Matter of Taste by Matthew Sutherland

**************

I have now been in this country for over six years, and consider myself in most respects well-assimilated.
However, there is one key step on the road to full assimilation which I have yet to take, and that's to eat BALUT.

The day any of you sees me eating balut, please call immigration and ask them to issue me a Filipino passport. Because at that point there will be no turning back.

BALUT, for those still blissfully ignorant non-Pinoys out there, is a fertilized duck egg. It is commonly sold with salt in a piece of newspaper, much like English fish and chips, by street vendors usually after dark, presumably so you can't see how gross it is. It's meant to be an aphrodisiac, although I can't imagine anything more likely to dispel sexual desire than crunching on a partially-formed baby duck swimming in noxious fluid. The embryo in the egg comes
in varying stages of development, but basically it is not considered macho to eat one without fully discernable feathers, beak, and claws. Some say these
crunchy bits are the best.

Others prefer just to drink the so-called 'soup', the vile, pungent liquid that surrounds the aforementioned feathery fetus...excuse me, I have to go and throw up now. I'll be back in a minute.

Food dominates the life of the Filipino. People here just love to eat. They eat at least eight times a day. These eight official meals are called, in order:
breakfast, snacks, lunch, merienda, pica-pica, pulutan, dinner, and no-one-saw-me-take-that-cookie-from-the-fridge-so-it-doesn't-count.

The short gaps in between these mealtimes are spent eating Sky Flakes from the open packet that sits on every desktop. You're never far from food in the
Philippines. If you doubt this, next time you're driving home from work, try this game. See how long you can drive without seeing food and I don't mean a
distant restaurant, or a picture of food. I mean a man on the sidewalk frying fish balls, or a man walking through the traffic selling nuts or candy. I bet it's less than one minute.

Here are some other things I've noticed about food in the Philippines. Firstly, a meal is not a meal without rice - even breakfast. In the UK, I could go a whole
year without eating rice. Second, it's impossible to drink without eating. A bottle of San Miguel just isn't the same without gambas or beef tapa. Third, no
one ventures more than two paces from their house without baon and a container of something cold to drink. You might as
well ask a Filipino to leave home without his pants on. And lastly, where I come from, you eat with a knife and fork. Here, you eat with a spoon and fork. You try eating rice swimming in fish sauce with a
knife.

One really nice thing about Filipino food culture is that people always ask you to SHARE their food. In my office, if you catch anyone attacking their baon, they
will always go, "Sir! KAIN TAYO!" ("Let's eat!"). This confused me, until I realized that they didn't actually expect me to sit down and start munching on their boneless bangus. In fact, the polite response is something like, "No thanks, I just ate.." But the principle is sound - if you have food on your plate, you are expected to share it, however hungry you are, with those who may be even hungrier. I think that's great. In fact, this is frequently even taken one step
further. Many Filipinos use "Have you eaten yet?" "KUMAIN KA NA?") as a general greeting, irrespective of time of day or location.

Some foreigners think Filipino food is fairly dull compared to other Asian cuisines. Actually lots of it is very good: Spicy dishes like Bicol Express (strange, a dish named after a train); anything cooked with coconut milk; anything KINILAW; and anything ADOBO. And it's hard to beat the sheer wanton, cholesterholic frenzy of a good old-fashioned LECHON de leche feast. Dig a pit, light a fire, add 50 pounds
of animal fat on a stick, and cook until crisp. Mmm, mmm... you can actually feel your arteries constricting with each successive mouthful.

I also share one key Pinoy trait ---a sweet tooth. I am thus the only foreigner I know who does not complain about sweet bread, sweet burgers, sweet spaghetti, sweet banana ketchup, and so on. I am a man who likes to put jam on his pizza. Try it! It's the weird food you want to avoid.

In addition to duck fetus in the half-shell, items to avoid in the Philippines include pig's blood soup (DINUGUAN); bull's testicle soup, the strangely-named
"SOUP NUMBER FIVE" (I dread to think what numbers one through four are); and the ubiquitous, stinky shrimp paste, BAGOONG, and it's equally stinky sister, PATIS.

Filipinos are so addicted to these latter items that they will even risk arrest or deportation trying to smuggle them into countries like Australia and the USA, which wisely ban the importation of items you can smell from more than 100 paces.

Then there's the small matter of the blue ice cream. I have never been able to get my brain around eating blue food; the ubiquitous UBE leaves me cold.

And lastly on the subject of weird food, beware: that KALDERETANG KAMBING (goat) could well be KALDERETANG
ASO (dog)... The Filipino,of course, has a
well-developed sense of food.

Here's a typical Pinoy food joke: "I'm on a seafood diet." "What's a seafood diet?" "When I see food, I eat it!"

Filipinos also eat strange bits of animals --
the feet, the head, the guts, etc., usually barbecued on a stick. These have been given witty names, like "ADIDAS" (chicken's feet); "KURBATA" (either just
chicken's neck, or "neck and thigh" as in "neck-tie"); "WALKMAN" (pigs ears); PAL" (chicken wings); "HELMET" (chicken head); "IUD" (chicken intestines), and
"BETAMAX" (video-cassette-like blocks of animal blood). Yum, yum. Bon appetit.

"A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches" -- (Proverbs 22:1)

WHEN I arrived in the Philippines from the UK six years ago, one of the first cultural differences to strike me was names. The subject has provided a continuing source of amazement and amusement ever since. The first unusual thing, from an English
perspective, is that everyone here has a nickname. In the staid and boring United Kingdom, we have nicknames in kindergarten, but when we move into adulthood we tend, I am glad to say, to lose them.

The second thing that struck me is that Philippine names for both girls and boys tend to be what we in the UK would regard as overbearingly cutesy for anyone
over about five. Fifty-five-year-olds colleague put it. Where I come from, a boy with a nickname like Boy, Blue or Honey Boy would be beaten to death at school by pre-adolescent bullies, and never make it to adulthood. So, probably, would girls with names like Babes, Lovely, Precious, Peachy or Apples. Yuk, ech, ech. Here, however, no one bats an eyelid.

Then I noticed how many people have what I have come to call "door-bell names". These are nicknames that
sound like - well, door-bells. There are millions of them. Bing, Bong, Ding, and Dong are some of the more common. They can be, and frequently are, used in even more door-bell-like combinations such as Bing-Bong, Ding-Dong, Ting-Ting, and so on. Even our newly-appointed chief of police has a door bell name Ping. None of these door-bell names exist where I come from, and hence sound unusually amusing to my untutored foreign ear. Someone once told me that one of the Bings, when asked why he was called Bing, replied "because my brother is called Bong". Faultless logic.

Dong, of course, is a particularly funny one for me, as where I come from "dong" is a slang word for... well, perhaps "talong" is the best Tagalog equivalent.

Repeating names was another novelty to me, having never before encountered people with names like Len-Len, Let-Let, Mai-Mai, or Ning-Ning. The secretary
I inherited on my arrival had an unusual one: Leck-Leck. Such names are then frequently further refined by using the "squared" symbol,as in Len2 or Mai2. This had me very confused for a while. Then there is the trend for parents to stick to a theme when naming their children. This can be as simple as making them all begin with the same letter, as in Jun,
Jimmy, Janice, and Joy.

More imaginative parents shoot for more sophisticated forms of assonance or rhyme, as in Biboy, Boboy, Buboy, Baboy (notice the names get worse the more kids there are-best to be born early or you could end up being a Baboy). Even better, parents can create whole families of, say, desserts (Apple Pie, Cherry Pie,Honey Pie) or flowers (Rose, Daffodil, Tulip). The
main advantage of such combinations is that they look great painted across your trunk if you're a cab driver. That's another thing I'd never seen before coming to Manila -- taxis with the driver's kids'
names on the trunk.
Another whole eye-opening field for the foreign visitor is the phenomenon of the "composite" name. This includes names like Jejomar (for Jesus, Joseph and Mary), and the remarkable Luzviminda (for Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, believe
it or not). That's a bit like me being called
something like "Engscowani" (for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland).

Between you and me, I'm glad I'm not. And how could I forget to mention the fabulous concept of the randomly inserted letter 'h'. Quite what this device is supposed to achieve, I have not yet
figured out, but I think it is designed to give a touch of class to an otherwise only averagely weird name. It results in creations like Jhun,Lhenn, Ghemma,
and Jhimmy. Or how about Jhun-Jhun (Jhun2)?

How boring to come from a country like the UK full of people with names like John Smith. How wonderful to come from a country where imagination and exoticism
rule the world of names. Even the towns here have weird names; my favorite is the unbelieveably-named town of Sexmoan (ironically close to Olongapo and Angeles). Where else in the world could that really be true?

Where else in the world could the head of the Church really be called Cardinal Sin?

Note: Philippines has a senator named Joker, and it is his legal name.

Where else but the Philippines!

... - we are relatively fair to all members of society without being communist (nothing wrong with communism I just prefer being a capitalist)

- we have a very rich history which is fantastically preseerved
- we combine four completely different nations (England, N.Ireland, Scotland and Wales) which all have dfferent needs and requirements, traditions and styles of life
- we are open to any number of people seeking refuge (this is being stopped but its nice the people that are here feel comfortable enough to stick to their traditions helping to enrich society)
- we have no shame in losing, after all we allow anyone to leave the empire without asking questions and yet always believe we can win, look at football - we never win the world cup and we accept that but we always belive we will NEXT TIME
the list goes on...

One problem I have: Why am I close-minded because I agree with President Bush?

Onto America:

1) We're a nation of many people, the world's melting pot.
2) We were able to forge an alliance with the country that first oppressed us.
3) We are trying to spread freedom and democracy to the world, so that people will no longer live under oppressive dictators

Bad things:
1) I live next to Detroit (highest murder rating in the world)
2) Intolerance
3) Gas prices (I had to add it). Psh, and people claim we're in Iraq to steal oil.

I think it's because he is surprisingly similar to Abe Lincoln. All Lincoln wanted to do was make people happy. We didn't care either way if the slaves were freed or not, he just wanted credibility and to have most of the US on his side. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against both of them, it's just the fact that all of the things Bush is pushing are what most of America wants, and that is terrible! The majority of America is uneducated and they just want to hate. Not only that, but debates like abortion and gay marriage are gigantic in America, yet in other countries, it's legalized, and they have prospered. People are just too stupid in America, and it's really dragging us down as a nation in it's entirety. I don't condone euthanasia, but some people just need to die.

Well, today I tried to let other reasonable humans know that not all Americans are jingoistic madmen. That might save a few americans. And what have you done?

The point is, your attitude is exactly what the world hates about Americans. You have to be smart enough to see that, don't you? We are a freakin' amazing country and have s**t loads to be proud of, but your braggin about f**king countries up and killing is just gonna piss the world off, right? Ya think maybe that sort of attitude might be what terrorists use to justify killing Americans? I honestly think it's attutde like yours that are, in part, responsible for 9/11, embassy bombings and the murder of Americans abroad.

You have no idea what its like to risk your life to say what you have just said. Yeah after you step out of your comfort zone you might appreciate the sacrifices your fellow citizens have made. No I am not proud of some of the things our country has done, but neither am I ashamed (Even though our current policies are pushing that envelope). I wasn't bragging about killing people, I was trying to show how we are currently the country with the most powerful political, and military power.
But besides that one of my fundamental beliefs is a quote from Edmund Burke: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

And no, I am not in this game to bully other people around. We have emotions too. That's why we break down in tears every time we receive a letter from somebody telling us how much much they appreciate our efforts. No matter who receives that letter, at very least their eyes will become misty with emotion. We aren't thoughtless barbarians, we are simply citizens who are doing what we do best to protect our country.

Apparently what you do best is hide behind your keyboard and change the world from there... I personally have something against that, because i see that as pure cowardice. That is why you aren't in any branch of our current government. Its because you don't have the guts to crawl out of your parents basement, and stand up as a person for what you think is right. If you have feelings that are that strong, then get out there, do some fund raising, and run for a political office. But no, you are probably too afraid (you probably blame it on being too busy) to do that, and that's why you sit behind a keyboard where nobody can harm you.

You are a coward, and unless you grow some balls you will be that for the rest of your life.

You're sympathizing with terrorists makes you even more despicable. Are you actually suggesting that we deserved the attacks that happened on Sept. 11th? You realize that if you think this way that you are advocating terrorist activity, and I (as well as many, many other good citizens) swore to protect this country from all enemies "foreign and domestic". I am sorry but if you sympathize with our enemy, then you are the enemy, and I can only wish that God himself has chosen to let you rot in a hell 10 times worse than you could have possibly imagined. How can you call yourself and American, and say there was a just cause behind the killings of innocent civilians?

More than anger that i have towards you, I have sadness. The reason I protect my country is because I am trying to do the very best in my profession to hopefully stop attacks were American citizens are at risk. And it hurts me more than anything else to see people that seem to wish some of our own citizens nothing but harm.

I totally agree with this...

Anyway, from what I here about people from here that goes somewhere else (US or wherever), one common feedback is that life was sort of like a "robot" there. Everything's already planned. Ok, I was wrong, you aren't smart enough to see what I'm saying.
You totally blew off what I was saying and got back on your bandwagon.

I'll try to keep this simple.
1) Do you think this statement is going make people LIKE us or hate us?
"Nobody wants to mess with us, because they know we are a super power, and super crazy"

2)This line IS all about braggin'. Nothing else.
"We're the only country thats used nuclear bombs as an act of war. TWICE."

Again, it's an attitude like yours that is creating so many enemies for the USA. Maybe that's your plan, job security. ( I almost deleted that last as being inappropriate, but maybe not so much)

And don't be an a**. I'm not sympathising with terrorists. I'm pointing out the sort of things that CREATE them.

And just to make sure it is understood. None of my remarks are intended for our military in general. I have the greatest respect for them and they things they have to go through to keep our country safe and free. (BTW-you are way off base on who I am and what I've done) My remarks are directed people like you who simply want to kill and us patriotism as an excuse.

I'm sure you know the source for this, right?

And there's (one of the) reason(s) why George Dubya Bush is such a bad* president - he has said:

Anyway

Im danish, and i have mixed emotions about my country. Most people around my age are good people, however grownups and especially older people often border on rascism.

Denmark is a very free country which is great, but highly misunderstood by 99% of the population - they think because they are REAL danes (technically im one of them) they are somehow more important than the rest of the population and free to say what they want and decide what everybody else must do. The real meaning of freedom of expression is "Freedom to argue for what you mean" not "Freedom to say im right, your wrong!"

We have high tax rates 50% + , however we have posibly the best public sector in the world. That is one of the great things about my country which i hope future governments will work hard to retain.

I'm not going to do that because:

1. I've got much better things to do then waste my time arguing with someone about things that have been argued about since Roe vs. Wade and as far as gay marriage goes, that is one of the stupidest arguements since the debate between evolution and intelligent design in schools. It's an arguement fueled by hate because so many people just want to find a scapegoat for their problems, and saying that gays are ruining family values, that's terrible! Most opposite sex marriages really last a month at the most. If gays want to get married, let them get married! It's not your business to but in with people's personal lives!

2. By saying all the stupid sh*t you said, you're just further proving my point.

3. For America, I've expressed my freedoms, my freedom of speech, my freedom of the press, and if I wanted to start a militia in my town, I would, but that too would a serious waste of my time. I want to show the best of what America has to offer to the rest of the world, because, so far, our appearance to them is that of a boarish nation who thinks that we are the police of the world. We do not have power over other countries, and the fact that you condone the killing of Arab and Muslim peoples is appaling, and someone as uneducated about the world around you just like yourself really should never be able to consider anything they say a valid point. Now leave me alone, I've got sh*t I need to do.

actually i would rather live in england because when they say record its sounds funny and i recently had a kid from whales join my school system hes pretty cool but can be annoying.

My country is great [USA]. We get to invade other countries and kill people. Which of course gives us great power in the world, and many other luxuries. So I'm not going to start complaining. Of course I'm not going to start helping with the cause either. But hell, if they want to make me a general then that's the only thing I'll sign up as, tee hee. Twisted Evil

I've thought about this before and have always been confused. Apparently I'm not the only one. Check out this article at wiki.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Use_of_the_word_American

But here is my query. Our country is "The United States of America". What "should" we be called? Mexico is "The United Mexican States" so any use of United or states could be confusing. The USA is the only country with "America" in it's name, so I think it's understandable why we us it.

So what do the spanish-speaking world think we should call ourselves?

New Zealand!

New Zealand is like the best country to live in (and thankfully I do!), because you get all the befits of a first world country (environment, health, science etc) but not the pollution, corruption and evil corporations (and people) of most bigger countries. Another reason is that New Zealand has a voice... being part of the commonwealth and a respected country New Zealand has always been able to speak out... and we have.

New Zealand was like first in women's rights, 40-hour-(working)week, universal voting, nuclear free etc.

I don't think there a any major cons to New Zealand (compared to other countries) except it is small (less business opportunities etc).

New Zealand rocks!!!! and the people here a good too!

PS. Anyone else from New Zealand? Your thoughts?

Well..I'd have to say (being originally from lebanon): the food. It's known everywhere for being divine.
what bothers me when i go back home is how superficial people are. It's nothing you don't find anywhere else though. I'd have to say a greater con is the pollution that isn't remedied that much.

The spirit of this topic is to let people know what to look for in your home country (kinda like publicity for people to have them visit your country)

Since the interest of the topic is obvious, it will remain open for now.

If and when the time comes we have to close it, reasons for closure will be considered and the participants that have derrailed from the theme will be evaluated.

Let's keep on topic and without braking the rules, please.

Just a heads up for past posts (wich are under consideration by the team):

Since I read the the Spanish-speaking world has issues with this, what do they think we should be called. Just curious.

Well I am not an authority in this matter, so I cannot tell you a precise term. How ever in spanish the correct way to call a citizen of the USA is "estadounidense" but I do not want to make an incorrect translation.
This issue is really banal, I think it is just easier to call yourselves "americans" because how can you find a proper Gentilitious when you have this complex name: United States of America? Besides calling yourselves americans makes you the owner of the continent just as Monroe stated when Spain tried to recover one of their colonies. I guess the US holds the copyright of the term "american" because they are a country that have really outstand in the whole continent and no country in America can compete or argue with the USA.

Perhaps in a hundred years Brasil, Mexico or other american country will be the next americans of the continent.

I think your harsh judgement on why the americans refer to themselves as americans should be more precisely placed - it is afterall not the current americans fault that they are known as americans, but americans from 500 years ago (or something like that) who are to blame for the rather confusing naming...

Unless americans decide to rename themselves to "humans" or maybe "leaders" im not complaining (Wink)- at least everyone is clear on what an american means - technically incorrect as it may be.

Also this could be because we dominate The Americas in general, as in most people from the Europe are stereotyped into Europeans, and people from england are English. Or people from the middle east are characterized by being indian, arab, or asian.

All of these are just ways of catagorizing a large group of people who all came from a common ancestor( not the first human being but the first inhabitants in their area).

America also does embodie more then a name of a nation, it still stands for a few values which these United States of America uphold. Rather then condemning our leader, i would go to say that yes America has been in others foriegn affairs since the cold war but one thing of all the USA promotes freedom of man and women under the rule of domocracy, and even though most people disagree that we are forcing our policies, which probably is the case, the end result is for the people to choose. If any one is currently under a dictatorship please give us your opinion?

In America people have the right to be fools. That's whats so great about my country.

One of my teachers tells that to me all the time when I do stupid things but he is right; a bad thing in America, I believe, is that liberties sometimes go too far, especially with sueing rights and people sueing others for something stupid that they did. If a robber was to try and break into my house and he stumbled on a loose brick, he could sue me for medical costs.

Other than that I think America is great

True but people can still ask questions in the countries not under dictatorship.

To add to the question anyone who has recently or has been under a dictatorship and can share their opinion please do!

I love my country because we unite together in times of trouble and we never forget those who die as heros for all of us
