Anybody ever heard of Bebo? And if so, what do you think of it? This article here says it's giving MySpace a serious run for its money. Check it out and post yer comments!
Bebo (The 'other' Myspace?)
I HATE bebo. I recieve SO much spam from them - even after I have ended my account on their page.
Also - what ON EARTH is the purpose of BEBO? - it doesnt really do anything of any use IMO

Really? Did the spam start coming right away or did it take a while because I haven't received any spam whatsoever from them.
Well...SPAM type nr one:
When you have like 200 contacts on MSN and they ALL send you that message...it gets rather anoying and IMO clasifies as spam.
2:
Those are annoying aswell - especially when the same contact writes his/her 10th quiz about him/herself
and finally:
Write me a goddam mail if you want to contact me - 99% of all the mails i recieved over BEBO where SPAM anyway - the kinda mail which is written in 1 minute and then sent to every contact in the persons contact book
That is why i HATE BEBO

Admittedly I haven't really explored all the features at Bebo but I'm assuming that they don't give you the option to turn off email notifications like MySpace? Have you tried MySpace BTW? (just curious) Also are you talking about spam coming to your Bebo inbox or to the email address you used to sign up with? Because MySpace is just as bad when it comes to its in-house contact system (e.g. Bulletins, etc)

Most of the stuff i get isnt "notifications" which you may or may not be able to turn of, its invites to a site im already member of and pointless quizes made by people i hardly know.
I did have a myspace account for some time, and found the "service" much more professional however i got bored and never used it so i have deleted it

I agree that Bebo does give a hell of a load of spam. And the some of the messages that I get in my Bebo email box are so stupid, they say they're from the admin of Bebo and you have to pass them on to everyone on your friend list to make sure your account is still active... (this is just one example) Ummmm... NO. Firstly, there's a message at the top of the view email page that says that Bebo staff will never email you personally and, furthermore, they can see which accounts are active etc anyway, I'm sure of that.
Also, I hate the way people give those spam comments AND the 'Flash box', or 'Bebo TV' as I think it's now called has to (sometimes) be clicked on to 'activate' it (MSIE 6.0 users will know what I'm talking about).
Bebo also has some serious design flaws that and a many anoying aspects.
So I must compliment them for doing so well, I mean, I could make a website that was better than Bebo. But it wouldn't have half as many users.
I use Bebo dispite it's problems because I HATE myspace because it's soooo bad, it's terrible. The pages are laggy and too long and full of spam and the music plays automaticaly (and needs to be 'activated') and ..... etc etc.
Sorry, I'm rambling.
I think you get the idea now anyway

I submitted a Bebo skin I made and they apparently rejected it because it was too good. I kid you not. Here's a verbatim copy of their rejection email:
I'm still wondering if this is some kind of canned response they send to everyone when a skin is rejected or if they really meant what they said. Nuts, eh? So what am I supposed to do to get a skin accepted? Do a crappier job?

| Thank you for the Skin you created on Bebo. We've reviewed the Skin and haven't made it available to all Beboers at this time. Our feedback is as follows:
Thank you for submitting your skin to us! Unfortunately yours was not approved because your vision as an artist was far beyond us, and frankly went right over our heads. We felt it was too brilliant a piece of work to unleash on the general Bebo public. If you like, you can choose to use your skin on your homepage where other people will see it, but not be able to copy it. You can do this by going to the 'change skins' link on your homepage, and then to 'Become a featured skin artist.' From there, click on 'clicking here >>>' which will take you to the list of custom skins you?ve made. Then you can choose to 'Use on my homepage.' If you would like to make revisions please sign into Bebo here http://www.bebo.com/Skins.jsp and make the necessary amendments. Please note that you can use any Skin you create on your own Homepage, it just can't be used by other Beboers without approval. We only make a small percentage of Skins submitted available to everyone. Successfull skins must be unique, copyright free, cool, text must work over all background images including the tabs and module titles, and they must be better than the other ones submitted |

That's a very very odd response... Ummm, it has me stumped too.
Is there any way of asking them what they actually mean by 'it's too good', or if they just sent a auto response to everyone they didn't choose.
Perhaps they mean that they didn't like it, but thought that it was good. Or maybe thought that it was good but didn't suit their desired target audience. I'm not really sure

Funny thing is, I didn't even think the skin was all that spectacular. But I haven't sent a follow-up to ask what they mean. Not sure they'd respond anyway as they probably get tons of emails asking why skins are rejected.
Always had so much spam by "Answer my quiz" or whatever from Bebo so I developed a hate for it. Apparently it's not that bad though but i'm still slightly wary of it. I use MySpace but not Bebo, maybe I'll get an account one day but for now I'm not bothered.
MySpace isn’t the only site riding the social networking trend: rival Bebo is growing like a weed. Bebo even looks set to overtake MySpace in the UK market, according to the Guardian. (Nonetheless, the Guardian published a similar article last month claiming that FaceParty was the biggest threat to MySpace in the UK, so take it with a pinch of salt). From the site:
Bebo is the next generation social networking site where members can stay in touch with their College friends, connect with friends, share photos, discover new interests and just hang out. From previous experience, the people who work at Bebo have learned a lot about what makes social networks fun, and believe that with Bebo they’ve taken social networking to the next level.
Essentially, Bebo is MySpace meets Facebook. It also provides video sharing (via VideoEgg widgets) and built-in Skype presence. While the designs may be more controlled than MySpace pages, most of Bebo’s success seems to arise from network effects - users join Bebo because everyone else is using the site. By the same token, Bebo may have trouble expanding to other markets, since these networks can be self-reinforcing

Bebo, the social network that’s been hot on the heels of MySpace in the UK market, has now overtaken MySpace in weekly visits, according to Hitwise. Both sites suffered a dip at the start of the summer, but the launch of Bebo Bands, Bebo’s new music service, seems to have given a huge boost to the MySpace rival. For the week ending August 5th, Bebo was the most visited social network in the UK, and its market share of visits has grown 17% in the past two weeks. 1 in every 135 UK visits goes to Bebo, which is now the 11th most visited site on the Internet.
Users also stick around on Bebo for longer - the average session time on Bebo is 28:58 minutes, while on MySpace it’s 26:26 minutes. Another interesting tidbit: Bebo is the number one social network in New Zealand. Meanwhile, Xanga leads in Hong Kong, and Friendster leads in Singapore. MySpace maintains its lead in the US and Australia.
Bebo is far less customizable than MySpace - there’s no Bebo equivalent of MySpace layouts, since users must choose between a selection of pre-made “skins”. Companies even create “sponsored skins” to advertise their products. Users also have blogs, polls and whiteboards. Bebo doesn’t have a direct competitor to MySpace Video, but they do have a “Flash box” where users can upload videos via VideoEgg or insert clips from YouTube. Nonetheless, there doesn’t seem to be any way to insert html code, which rules out 3rd party development. Bebo’s advantage is that they have network effect in the UK market: if all your friends are on Bebo, why use MySpace?
In related news, there are rumors circulating that Viacom is in talks to buy Bebo. But since we’ve already seen (inaccurate) rumors of a Bebo acquisition by BT, it’s probably best to treat this as speculation.

wots ur name on bebo. i'd like to see the skin they deeemed to be 'tooo good 4 the general public'.
I think bebo's alright though i don't like those messages either, though i think there's a way to turn them off, but i cant be bothered to so i set my email program (thunderbird) to put them in a special folder which i ignore.
What really annoys me is that people are so gullible.
Loads of my m8s on bebo send me msgs saying
'send this onto all the people in your address book within the next five minutes or u will never have the love of your life'
I mean that is going way beyond the realms of stupidity[/quote]

Yeah, I'd like to see that too. I hadn't thought of it before.

Yeah, I hate those too, but personally I hate the 'new trend' of Bebo spam that's just started even more. People forward me messages like "if you don't send this on your sick", and then the message is: "send this on to everyone in your friends list to pay respect to people who have died of cancer." But quite frankly, you're not paying respect to anyone by sending it on, you're just wasting people's time and bandwidth - not to mention your own. You also get messages that claim they're from the Bebo staff or admin teem, but there's a message in red at the top of the read email page telling you that the Bebo staff will NEVER email you. People really are stupid if they send on any spam / chain emails at all.
As you can probably tell, they really get on my nerves!!!
yeah, i know what u mean.
As soon as i see them in my inbox now, i delete them.
I classic stupid one is the 'collect as many hotmail addys as u can, ad ur addy to the list and send it to everyone in your address book'
this means that if everyone adds their name to the list, and keep forwarding it, eventually the lists ends up with the creator and he has over 500 names + addys on the list with witch to spam.
Its stupid
When i started off though, i didn't know this and i did read quit an interesting forwarded story from som1 about a girl who was told she was ugly as **** and she then went home and slit her wrists (not the most pleasent story) but it was more of a warning than a scam and it made me think about it

*chuckle*... I had to sign in just to get my Bebo URL because I forgot what it was. I guess it's obvious I'm not taking the Bebo thing seriously anymore. I basically abandoned the whole thing right after I got that email from Bebo admin. I should really delete this profile but I got a strange feeling it might come in handy some day.... I dunno...
Anywho, here it is... Gotta warn ya though... I really don't think it's all that special...
http://ironspider.bebo.com
No, it's definatly not anything special. But I like the skin.
Judging by the other skins that you can select from, though, I think the reason that they didn't select it to be one of the public skins is because it doesn't have enough on it. I think they may have accepted it if you had put some more little lighter blue circles at the bottom of each section. But I'm not totally sure.

Yes well I'm sure that it wouldn't be that difficult to come up with any number of reasons why it's not an exceptional skin worthy of circulating amongst other Beboers but why not just say so? Why, instead, did they feed me this line about "your vision as an artist was far beyond us, and frankly went right over our heads. We felt it was too brilliant a piece of work to unleash on the general Bebo public...." etcetera etcetera..?
It's patently insane.

I just can't help laughing at your last comment there!
Yeah, I guess they're trying not to make you feel bad, as many people will spend lots of time on their designs, only to have them rejected. But it would be better if they just said things plainly, and better still, if they gave some constructive critisism.
yeah, its good, but i think their choice of words to describe it were lame
