Indestructible Toyota Hilux

Pyro Man
in 2003 BBC Top Gear decided to destroy a Toyota Hilux. This was to no succession. They tried everything, and tis quite remarkable how well it faired! They were not aloud to replace any parts and only use simple tools. They had to of course replace a windscreen. They tried the following:

Taking it to Bristol and:

Driving it down solid stone steps at 30mph
scraping against numerous walls
smashing it into a large oak tree at speed (locals moaned about damage to the 100 year old tree)
Strapping it down to a pier and letting the waves pound against it (the straps broke and it was smashed against all of the cliffs and rocks, and carried out to sea, and was recovered 5 hours later, drained, filled with diesel and it went first time)

Taking it back to the Guildford Studio:

They dropped it from a crane
Dropped a caravan onto the roof of it (a trailor)
hit it with a wrecking ball
drove it through a shed
Set fire to it

Hackney North London

Placed it atop a 240ft skyscraper which was blown up with high explosives, it fell with 12,000 tons od concrete, to the ground with a thud.
They pulled it down with an excavator and bashed it about a bit

It took a while to turn over, but it still started after all of that, and went up to 60mph. Here are the pictures. It is obviously sevrely damaged, but is in very good nick for what happened to it.

Sadly most of the pictures no longer work. But if you go on google images type in "top gear hilux" for all of the thumbnails. You can watch the 15 minuite video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nD0UVI99R8Q It may seem long, but it is worth it! It is great! It destroys everything it comes across!

There is also a banned tv ad here, which is funny this is only about 30 secs but also worth it. This has nothing to do with the BBC show, but it is funny: http://www.videofoundry.co.nz/ianman/humour/bugger.html

This is why I am a huge fan of Toyota and Honda. I am quite poor and need to have a vehicle that will last 20+ years reliably. I have friends who have Honda Civic's from the 80's that run like they were bought yesterday.

Did you, or anybody watch the film?

You should watch the episode where they make amphibious vechiles. Jeremy uses a ToyBota Hilux and puts a massive outboard motor on the back of it. He really wanted to put two on but it wasn't wide enough. It is a really funny episode I was laughing for at least 10 minutes while I was watching it!

James May made a sailing boat out of a car and took about 2 hours to go 2 miles. Richard Hammond sunk in his "dampervan" which incidently had to be towed up a hill my Clarkson's Hilux because it was too slow on its own. May broke down and had to get a tow truck to the lake.

They oviously didn't hit it wih much speed. You can easily wrap anything short of a bulldozer around a tree.

It didnt do a lot of damage to it though.

Scotty, it was a Triumph Herald, and it won.

Oh man! I laughed sooooooo hard at TOYBOTA! when he and hammond flipped it i was nearly in tears... oh man... I'd have to say Top Gear is my favorite show. It's got it all, drama (the challenges), cars (ohhh the cars) and the laughs (i just have to look at the size difference between jeremy and richard to laugh... or how blunt James is)

Top Gear is an awesome show. I think the limited number of episodes keep me interested. just sux having to wait till the fall for a new episode.

That Toyota HIlux was awesome. When they got it out of the water the mechanic only had a few hand tools to work on the truck. it looked like it took a while but it sure did start up again. they have it displayed in the new studio. along with that Mini they fixed up. I guess the only good thing about this break is that i get to go back and watch a few of the episodes i missed.

I once had a 1985 Forerunner, sporty version of the Hilux.
I wish they sold Hilux in Indonesia but only Landcruisers and Forerunner.
I agree they are the most indestcutable car made for such a reasonable price.

Yeah, Jappanesse vehicles do go for a very long time. People do knock them but they are fantastic.

Some freinds of ours wrote a Hilux off, but it still drove. They were towing a horse box, and the cross winds built up, flipping the horsebox and hilux over.
