A new report by the United Nations AIDS agency says India has overtaken South Africa as the country with the highest number of people infected with HIV/AIDS. The UNAIDS report also says the epidemic has spread in some Asia-Pacific nations, such as Burma and Vietnam, but slowed slightly in others.

It goes on to say that, of the eight million people in Asia infected with HIV/Aids, six million are in India alone.

While some from India keep claiming how 'civilized' and 'modern' they are, they seem to be having some trouble with things that are clearly preventable.

Actually if you ever done a bit of research, It turns out India does try its best. They hand out free condoms all the time at hospitals, But the problem is either people just dont realize the threat because of a mentality of beliefs that are outdated.

Another problem is Health Care, India if I'm right doesnt have a universal health care system accessible to all, This in turn causes people to wonder, Should I pay for a check up knowing I earn little and really can't afford it?

And another factor is Condoms are used for maintaining their houses. As crazy as it seems, I read this article about HIV, Condoms and India and it seems its people, Not all are using them to seal cracks in their houses ect.

S3..

I think we have had enough of your drab.

Every country is not perfect in everything.

And not even yours is.

So just dont comment without knowing the conditions of people living here and the facilities which they get or rather dont get/

Things may be preventable, but they are not always done so, as in a number of examples in the case of your beloved nation too.

We have numerous problems financially and socially and it is very difficult for such a large country without much facilities to curb it by a great margin

Though necessary steps are being taken, it is still difficult

And by the way the number of people infected every year has come down in the last couple of years

I certainly dont like to fire my comments against your country, but just dont make me to.

It is enough having controversies with you around

Just because a few are rich in India, does not mean everybody are.

I think I read somewhere before this that India was about to overtake South Africa in terms of the number of people suffering from AIDS.
but maybe you forgot to take into account India's population and the prevalency rate.

India's prevalency rate (among adults, aged 15-49) is 0.9% - source

On the other hand, the prevalency rate in South Africa is:
Quote:
Based on this survey, the researchers estimate that 10.8% of all South Africans over the age of 2 years were living with HIV in 2005. Among those between 15 and 49 years old, the estimated HIV prevalence was 16.2% in 2005.

However, the data for India is based on a census taken at the end of 2003, at which time the total number of AIDS cases was 5.1 million. As you haven't quoted a source, I can't verify your facts, but even if one were to assume that the current number of people with HIV/AIDS in India is 6 million, out of a population of around 1 billion (it's actually considerably higher, but we'll assume 1 billion for mathematical simplicity), then the prevalency rate is 0.6%
If one were to assume that 20% of India's population was below 2 years, it's population in terms of persons above 2 years of age would be 800 million. Even now, the prevalency rate is 0.75%.

I would like to see the source for this. From my source,
Quote:
The Indian National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) estimates that 5.134 million people were living with HIV in 2004. This represents a slight increase from the 2003 estimate, and a substantial increase from 4.58 million in 2002.

Also, according to the UNAIDS 2006 Report on the global AIDS epidemic, India's expenditure from domestic financial sources on fighting the AIDS epidemic in 2004 was 73.3 million USD.
The only 2 countries which spent more than India were:
Thailand - 92.8 mn USD
South Africa - 340.5 mn USD

As you can see, a lot more research can be done on this subject before making statements. Smile

BTW, I haven't varified the UNA's data.

Agreed. That point could be made in other threads as well, and is part of the reason I made this thread. Wink

Probably due to a lack of understanding. AIDS doesn't necessarily mean that they are uncivilized, just under-educated when it comes to STD prevention. And without universal health care, the spreading of diseases such as this are more likely.

The world will live with AIDS, and all the other stuff. The only reason so many people are dying of it in the first place, is because there are too many of us.

Hmm... just because someone does something wrong doesn't mean you stoop to their level. I don't really know which thread you're referring to, but this is, in my opinion, the wrong way to try to redress something that you see is going wrong.

It's like... "Oh, look. The Islamic terrorists are attacking my cities. I'm going to strike back by destroying their entire country." Wink

Actually, that's what we should be doing. It would have put an end to all this terrorist crap by now. And we'd have their oil to boot! Laughing

But nooo. the US is too worried about what the world will think if it takes real action to protect itself.
