Rescue workers are continuing to search through rubble in an effort to find survivors following this morning's strong earthquake in Indonesia that killed almost 3,000 people.

With the death toll expected to rise, official figures indicate at least 2,900 people have been killed and as many more were injured.

The quake, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, flattened buildings in a densely-populated area near the city of Yogyakarta on the island of Java.

Police said electricity and communications across the city were also down.

Here, the Government has announced 500,000 in aid for the victims of the earthquake.

The Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Conor Lenihan, said the money was an initial contribution to the International Federation for the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

He said the Government would continue to monitor the situation. It is not yet known if any Irish people are missing or have been injured.

Pope Benedict, who is in Poland, has sent a letter to the Indonesian government expressing his deep sadness over the loss of life caused by the earthquake.
