Google has officially released their image management software Picasa 2 for Linux. It is available for download at

all the features that are available for Windows are their in the Linux version. some basic image editing like cropping, shading are also available. the program auto-detects all the images present on the partition. it is quite light on resources and is quite effective.
making collages is also possible with two or three images. it is very simple to use, unlike GIMP.
the installer is available as a Debian (deb) package, RPM(rpm) package or as a binary file. choose the installation according to the linux distribution.
