Are the Dixie Chicks allowed to express their opinion?

diverden
The Dixie Chicks have expressed their disrespect for President Bush but that is not any different than a vast majority of Americans. They are not ready to make nice according to their album. Opposing the President or opposing the war in Irag is somehow equated with being a traitor or being friendly to terrorists or being against the troops that are in Iraq. The Bush administration has been able to spin these positions as they do with WMD's, hurricane Katrina, the oil crisis, etc... We will make it through if we just trust them and stay the course, hard to them to see where they are going when their heads are so far up their __________.

Meh, I hate it when celebrities think that just because they're famous they should let the world know their opinion... Especially considering they're usually not the smartest people in the world... Just because they can express their opinion, doesn't mean they should... Rolling Eyes

Why not?
People have a right to freedom of speech and freedom of expression.
If you can drive a car with an "I Love George Bush" bumper sticker, why can't celebrities walk around with "I Hate George Bush" tags on them?
corey
I have to agree with that. Why should someone who has a chance at a larger audience not express their views? Just because they're famous doesn't mean that they should keep their opinions to themselves. There are many things that fame makes a person do but to keep one's political mouth shut? If they voted, then they should have a voice, regardless of the message or how loud it is. I'm sure that we wouldn't want our countries to keep us quiet either.
Soulfire
Yeah, they can express their opinions. Everyone can. I could go out and run around trying to convince people that Communism was the answer, and it'd be my opinion. Nobody could stop me (unless I was breaking laws, or infringing on the rights of others).

It's not always so clear-cut and simple though.

First off let me tell you I hate almost all country music, but the Dixie Chicks are the worst of them all.

They are a bunch of has-beens and never will-be's.... They were jerks for saying what they did about the president, and they are still jerks for the way they still act.

Even though only 35% of Americans support Bush, still many of those who hated the chicks then, hate them now.

I for one don't wanna hear their dumbass opinions.

Freedom of speech and expression is not complicating nor complicated. It's as simple as cen be. The only objection to free spech is when you try to incite people to violence or hatred (actually, in the case of inciting hatred and racism/sexism/other such issues, people still get away with 'freedom of speech')

From your post, I gather you're a staunch Republican. I don't wonder that you hate anyone who doesn't like Bush or makes bad comments about him. Why make the excuse of country music?
Speaking of country music, I see no connection with your hate for country music having anything to do with your hate for anyone anti-Bush.

Oh and one more thing... if you don't want to hear their dumbass opinion, you do, of course, have the freedom of choice to plug your ears, or to change the channel, or to just skip the story in your newspaper. Wink

Agreed, OtakuBoi.

tidruG, this has nothing to do with freedom of speech, as stated no the Constitution anyway. Don’t get caught up in media buzz words. The Dixy Chicks offended their fans, the people that buy their albums and tickets. The renowned are ‘free’ to express their opinion, its just annoying. Being a good actor or a great musician doesn’t give you some super power of insight. In fact, their power of insight seems to be reduced.

Well, needless to say, you are pro-Bush yourself as well, just as Otakuboi, which entitles you to the opinion that the power of insight of these artistes is reduced because they made anti-Bush statements.
However, a liberalist would say that their power of insight, on the contrary, has increased. Wink

As I said, a matter of personal opinion.

The Dixie Chicks are free to say whatever they want. Being in country music, their views are at odds with most of their fans, so they have to deal with the reactions to that, including reduced radio play, ticket sales, record sales, etc ... whether you agree with them or not, I give them credit for speaking their mind and accepting the consequences of it.

My thinking is, if you want to listen to their opinions go ahead. It's there, take it or leave it. Very Happy

diverden,
It's not like their freedom of speech has been infringed upon. Too many people think that if some TV station, or radio station, or magazine won't help you get your point across, then you're being censored, or you freedom of speech is being violated. Just the opposite is true. Those choosing not to convey your message, or buy your products are simply exercising their own freedom of speech/expression.

Yeah, tidru. Wow, did you get that just from READING my post? Oh, wait. If you READ my post you would have noticed that my point was that they spoke out against a man that their FANS support. That is why I mentioned their lack of insight.

Not all of us just intelligence by how closely others views are to our own.

I've never been to the US, I don't know much about Country Music, but from the last couple of posts, I gather that most Country Music fans are also pro-Bush. However, this was not decipherable from your post. I was merely stating that everyone should have the right to make comments on issues that they have opinions on.
A good post would be this one:

So, basically, their power of insight has reduced because their opinions are in disagreement with their fans? Or perhaps you mean that it's reduced because they have their own opinions (which their fans apparently don't agree with) and they have the guts to air these opinions knowing full well that they could be losing out on thir album sales, etc.
Well, I don't know about you... but to me, an artiste is only worth respecting if he/she/they have the guts to air his/her/their opinion irrespective of the fear of losing out on their album sales.
Also, I don't know about you... to you, everything may be connected, but I take everything as it comes, case by case. I like music artistes based on the music they make, rather than their political view.

Not all of us judge true insight by an artiste's desire/ability to keep his fans by gimmicks, lies, or cowardice either. Music artistes have the responsibility (and perhaps duty) to bring good music to their fans, not to adhere to their fans' political (or any other, except perhaps musical) views.

PS: You don't really know my views. Like I said, I've never been to ths US, so I'm neither leftist or rightist.

Right, so they should shut the HLL up and play their music and stop acting surprised when the people that gave them the fame and fortune that put them up on their little soap box kick them the HLL off of it and make them have to restart as some retro beatnik hippy ARTISIAN combo. Whoooooooo!!! GO girl wheeeee!!!!

Honestly, I have always loved the chicks. Especially the blond one in the middle, she reminds me of the classic strong southern woman I grew up admiring during puberty. To be more specific, I swear she must be related to a family my Mom and Dad where friends with before they split and I was exiled to this industrial tundra otherwise known as Detroit, or the 3 – 1 – third, if you are a stupid M in M fan. Yes, sadly my phone number is a 313………

It is cold as HLL up here. It has been a long time since I have seen two trees I could touch at the same time. Squirrels wonder up to you for a snack…..

Thanks, I think I will go cry myself to sleep now. Funny how such old memories give you such a kick.

Umm, SOUTHER BELLS, yeeeehawww

Screw you if ya want to play in TEXAS, and you ain’t got no fiddle in the band!

Shocked
The only part of your post I understood was:

which I would have to agree with. If the chicks made comments their fans didn't like, they'd have to face the reactions, quite obviously.

The rest of your post went over my head. But it looks like you had fun writing it Wink Smile
