last.fm

tlambert
Hi folks,

Does any of you know the fabulous http://www.last.fm? With a small plugin, they record any song you play and they put it in some listings. Last.fm automatically calculates your neighbours, meaning folks with the same taste in music as you. Nice to get to know some folks, and ever nicer to get to know some great music.

Cheers,

tlambert

I was using it when it was still audioscribbler.com Very Happy. Great plugin, and cool site too.

That's my page, have a look.

This would be nice but I don't really know about the download...is it nice and PC-safe? And how much does it collect about you?
Th3St1ck
yeah, i use last.fm
check out my page

http://www.last.fm/user/CornNuts

and yes, the download is safe i have been using it for a while
and my computer runs perfectly
the only information it collects is song/artist/album/length
Ray Salamon
100% safe... only collects whatever your ID3 tags have in them. I've had it well over a year now, and no problems of any kind. I've even gone so far as to use packet sniffers on it just to "actually see" what it sends, and it's just what's in the log file Smile. Very cool site/app. Go for it Very Happy

Yeah, it's totally safe. I know what you're probably thinking 'A plugin that views what I'm doing, and uploading it to their server'. So you think that it's doing other stuff as well.

I've been using it for over 2 years when it was still audioscrobbler.com, and I've never had a bad thing to say about it.

Well, here's my link: http://www.last.fm/user/ZX-6RR/

Good play lists Smile.

I think it'd be cool if they made it so you could customize (to a point) the pages... perhaps we'll see that in the future.

Isn't there an option for it to include your iPod's most recently played tracks in your statistics? I could be totally wrong, but I thought I remembered seeing that under the preferences somewhere.

In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing my recommendations a year or so from now. Right now my account is new enough that half my recommendations are things I already know, I just haven't gotten around to playing them yet. Smile
fireydeviant
I've ahd this since it was audio scrobbler as well. I think I like this new design better. It has nicer lists and networking, and the reccomendation thing is pretty cool

Another interesting way to find new music: pandora.com
this lets your type in an artist, and it finds related ones, based on the alikeness of the sound, it also makes a great radio, because it plays songs for you.
Zibé
I have an account since july 2005
I have found some interesting bands on this website.

I love me some last.fm Smile

I'm not trying to name drop or anything but I registered for audioscrobbler when it was only a month or two old. Then I stopped using for a year or two it because it really wasn't that cool. To say it has come a long way would be an understatement.
achowles
I've been using the radio to check out new musc for a few days now. I've been using the site for over a month to find similar bands to the ones I liked, but didn't try the radio until recently.

I use jetaudio so I don't have the plugin for that.

Also a last.fm-user. Still I listen to alot of music outside the computer. Hard to get that plugin to read ID3-tags from vinylrecords Laughing

Another great site to get inspiration for new music is pandora.com

You create a "radiostation" of your own. You vote good/bad for the songs and the station select simlar artists for you. You'll find a lot of new music there!

Great site, great way of communicating with people that have the same tastes of you (statistically, the nearest matches quite a lot of the time). Really love it and all it's features but only really bothered to sign up to it recently - seen it kicking around the internets for a long time though.

Ducksteina
I was using it for a short time but was experiencing huge lag when selecting a song in iTunes - so I deleted it.
Maybe I should try it out again and see if the lag is fixed, because it seems to be a very nice idea.
Archetype
Heh, still using it, but it's been screwing up a lot lately for me, and not the last.fm program doesn't seem to be scrobbling anything sometimes. It seems to be ok now. I think they just get massive traffic there, and it's hard to keep up with everything sometimes.
Josso
Concerning lag and the Last.FM software issues, I have noticed a few. It's true because of the traffic I can't speculate how much power they need behind their servers because it's a huge ammount. The software is a bit faulty sometimes when they are busy or whatever which is a bit lame but what the hell it's free and it's awesome. Due to lag... there should never be LOADS, even on busy nights. Maybe it's a plugin issue or whatever, try it again see if it works out for you.
Ozzy
Awesome site.

I LOVE lastfm
I discovered so many new artists and music from it

I can't live with out it now
shigajet
I've been a member of the Last.fm service since October 2005. I'll add my voice to the chorus of others and says that's it's a great service too. Thanks to Last.fm, I quickly found out who has the same/similar musical tastes as me (my neighbours). I wish I could spend more time to establish my circle of musical friends.

Anyway, here's my link: last.fm/user/shigajet

I've actually been listening to quite a bit of Prince lately, although I've been trying to put together an ESL CD as well - don't know if I can delete those from my scrobbled list. Sad
Mamsaac
Last.fm recently won some prizes on the Webbys... Like the grammy, but for websites.

It has lots of new features and servers have been stable for the last 2 months. Pretty good I believe...
Nutteloos
I have an account, but only check it every once in a while. Seems like they add new features every time I look away, though.

I`m new to this service, been using it for only few months.

Anyway, you can add me Smile

It's a pretty great site, many ppl are obssessed with it. I like that they have really current and "in the know" song selection. How do some people make it their signature though?

I've had an account for a while, but just started to "scrobble" 2 months ago. It helped me find a lot of good music.

pudovkin
I like the service very much and I think is very useful to find, in a standardized way, some artist and, if possible, hearing it. I see it as a parallel way of a band have some presence on the net, besides myspace and other music services.

The only thing I hate is their application. Razz
I use a (discontinued) AudioScrobbler plugin for Winamp.

last.fm is the best tool when you want to discover new bands Smile ... too bad you can't scrobb tracks shorter than 15s Laughing

sondosia
I use last.fm and love it, but I hate the fact that if you're using iTunes and it's set to repeat the same song over and over, last.fm won't pick up the repeated plays. This is annoying because I want it to have an accurate count of the songs I listen to, but whatever.

~Mimzy

I'm kinda repeating myself, but have a look at iSproggler sondosia.

That's not it, it's the CD's... I don't have my PC on all day, y'know. But hey, I guess that will never work.

I kinda lost interest in last.fm the past few months. It provides a global indication of what I listen to, but nothing more than that.
missdixy
I used to use it, but I often leave my music on random (6,000+ songs) when I was away so it was not accurate much of the time. Very Happy
mattchun
Have you tried pandora yet?
Nutteloos
Yeah... it's a real shame most country cannot use it now, though.
Octaeder
My problem with Last.fm is that I don't necessarily like all the music from one specific genre... So when I spend some time listening to, say, The Cooper Temple Clause then Last.fm would throw in a load of indie bands that I don't like because I've been listening to an indie band.

They aren't new suggestions, they're always bands I've heard of and just don't like.

I'm sure it's a great system if you only listen to one or two types of music but a lot of the time when I'd try the Last.fm recommendations player it just wouldn't throw out anything new.
ownaging
yeah lastfm is a really cool site

I get many good new bands from it, i visit the page every day and look for new musik

love it.

I have used Last.fm a few times, but what I struggled with was how to actually use it. But maybe that is just me! Haha, but I'll certainly be loging on again to take a look, all you people seem to like it! Very Happy

That's about the same problem I have. I like progressive. Heavy, soft, and most in between. Problem is, because I like some progressive metal, it throws in a bunch of garbage which mostly consists of grunting and screaming. Rolling Eyes

I use Last.fm mostly to have an indication of what I listen to. Every once in a while I scroll over the list and see a good band at the bottom of the list and wonder 'why is that so low?' which gets me into playing more of them. It helps me vary what I listen to some more.

What's also good is looking at what other people listen to. If someone listens to a lot of the bands I like, I often look at some of their other favorites to see if they're worth a shot.
ddukki
I actually got introduced to this today. I'm hoping that there'll be some good recommendations for me, because I've resorted to listening to the same things over and over again.
srujanlive
I am a newbie at last.fm and i already like it a lot. Its charts feature is pretty amazing considering the nostalgic value. Also being able to share your song reviews and recommendations with friends... Love them all.

I enjoy last.fm quite a bit. I found it quite interesting to find out what you all listen too. I don't think anyone here scored higher than a "low" compatability with me, and most everyone was "very low."

That's okay, diversity is good.

My last.fm user name: Ambiguity123

Yea for music!
SpellcasterDX
Perfectly safe, nice features, and a good site. I've only been using it for a weeks, but I like it already. I can check out new bands that are similar to what I like. It's awesome.
Patriot Players
Does it actually let you listen to the music that other people put up then? People were saying that they preferred it to pandora but it seems that they are two entirely different animals. Unless of course Im misunderstanding.
catscratches
I created one for my newly started band Pseudorandom just some days ago. http://www.last.fm/music/Pseudorandom . We have no music yet but we'll soon be finished with our first song Smile
Jaan
Yeah, but not much point to it. Traktor should be supported plugin.
Nutteloos
The main difference between last.fm and pandora is that Last.fm is very much dependant on you using it a lot. With pandora, you could just enter the title of one song, and you're done. Of course it adapts better after you giving some more input, but eventually it will understand that you don't like this, and very much like that. Last.fm will keep giving you the same recommendations for band B simply because you like band A, which is similar to band B (which you don't like).
GB
True, the recommendations may be a bit off, but it is kind of neat to see all the tracks you've played and look back at your listening patterns.

I also think it is fun to look at my neighbors and what they're listening too. Oftentimes, I come away wondering why they are my neighbors when they have a rating of Low or Medium. I mean, come on, out of all the people on Last.fm, no one has a very high? I know that's not true.

ANYWAY, I really enjoy seeing what I've listened too and discovering new bands and downloading any free music they offer (all legal of course)
virre
I wonder about that Pandora page... It seems intresting, but what to do when the page is limited to the US.

(Well except finding a free US proxy fouling it to belive you are from the US. But I think that would be illegal or is it?)
pudovkin
Yeap. I'm in Brazil and can't reach Pandora website.
I'm curious about the Pandora project.

I've recently started to use it and have enjoyed it. The big problem is that the volume between the song vary so extremely -.-

i love it. something about being able to see the charts of my listening habits without any extra effort on my part. it's fun to see what other people listen to, also. people are much better for finding new music than the site itself.

dangerdog

I had it for a day but now I don't use it anymore. Its cool since they have a huge range of music. I was surprised when I saw all the Moon Hee Jun and Seo Taiji listeners on there.

I love this tool. I used to use it as a DJ to get the most popular song or 2 from bands I haven't heard much from. (the charts feature show the most played songs from any given band). user name needmorecowbell
kuyman
Sometimes the suggestions aren't based on what sounds the same, but which groups act the same (Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, although both played so very much, aren't the same at all). The trick is to drag the slider from popular to somewhere in the middle between that and oscure. That's where you get your real matches, and where I've been the most successful.

My last.fm account is http://www.last.fm/user/kuyman/, feel free to add me.
woodenbrick
I think the similar artists thing mainly works by checking to see how many Pink Floyd fans listen to Led Zepplin, and if it's everyone then it will be a very high rating (100?) Not sure if this is a percentage rating or not.
SimonWSTS
I think the similar artists suggestion funciton is abolutely brilliant, it gives you a chance to stumble across bands you havn't heard of and most probably are really going to like!
