Mexico threatens lawsuits over Guard

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) -- Mexico warned Tuesday it would file lawsuits in U.S. courts if National Guard troops detain migrants on the border and some officials said they fear the crackdown will force illegal crossers into more perilous areas to avoid detection.

The Mexican government knows that their citizens are illegally crossing the board so if the US actually succeeds in stopping them then the Mexican government is going to sue the US?

On what grounds will they sue? Are they aware of what they are doing on THEIR borders?

I wonder if any other countries actually put up with this crap or if the US government is the only one that continously bends over to their neighboring country...

I'm not entirely sure what the main issue is here... is it immigration? Is it the culture of litigation in the US and other countries?

I think that the Mexican Government are warning that they will sue when migrants are held in political limbo - ie. they're in the US but haven't been given official status yet. If they are failed asylum seekers, or if they have been rejected entry to the US, they should be returned to Mexico. If they are allowed into the US, they should be able to pass the border without being detained.

However, if they have not been assigned a "status", does the US have a right to imprison them?

It's hard to tell what the objective is for the Mexican Government and their law-suits, but it seems to be quite a complex issue when you look into it.

The issue is very very simple; Mexico thinks it can dictate how we enforce our borders when Mexicans come here illegally.

Absolutely.

The United States is a sovereign country and can do as it wishes with it's borders and those that illegally cross them.

There are countries that will shoot you if you cross illegally btw...

It's really not complex at all. The only thing you need is a very basic understanding of how illegal immigration into the US by Mexicans affects the Mexican economy.

In a nutshell, a very large portion of the illegals that come here from Mexico are sending large amounts of money they make in the US to their families in Mexico. That money is spent on the Mexican economy, and is, next to their oil, Mexicos largest source of monetary income.

Therefore, they don't want the US to stop the flow of illegals into the US and the flow of US dollars back into Mexico, and have threatened lawsuits to prevent it.

To an extent, I agree with you here. Mexico don't have a right to dictate the border policy when some Mexicans try to cross into the US illegally. They do have some duty to their citizens who try to cross legally and are detained as criminals for doing so.

True. I can't argue on this issue.

I think this may be true, however this is an issue with immigration generally, not just between Mexico and the US. I'm from the UK, and we have fairly severe problems with illegal immigration... and we're an island!. Makes you wonder, doesn't it... Rolling Eyes

The US is not in the habit of detaining LEGAL aliens unless they break the law some other way.

Truth be told; Mexico strongly supports, encourages, funds, and otherwise helps it's citizens routinely come across the border ILLEGALLY.

Are the illegals there spending their money there or sending it home, tax free, to their families to spend in their country?

That was my point. Wink

Probably a bit of both, and yeah - I agree that this is one of the real issues behind illegal immigration. If they spent all the money in the UK, do you think governments would be trying as hard to stop it? I suspect maybe not.

And on that point we agree! Very Happy

The Mexicans are coming over illegally and being deported. We don't imprison them for sneaking over the border.

They're being asked to come back and go to court in 2 months. Unfortunately, they don't come back to go to court.
