TinyURL doesn't make my URL tiny after all :(

n0obie4life
Okay so I was kind of bored and decided to use

www.tinyurl.com - it claims to make my URL shorter.

So I tried "http://www.frihost.com" because it was too long for me to type Laughing.

But..it generated this

http://tinyurl.com/frrej

http://www.frihost.com is 22 chars
http://tinyurl.com/frrej is 24 chars

It made my URL longer Sad

You say that the URL is too long for you to type and the new url is longer.

This means you cant type the URL to come to frihost..

Does this also mean you wont come here ever after?? Rolling Eyes

Neat, now I can know the first 1 million digits of pi. Of course, I would first have to memorize the first ~50 digits... How useful.

I guess this is the longest domain name...
squirrelmaster

it's longer and yet now shorter than the shorter which is now longer Think

Well technically they never claimed to make URLs shorter than their redirect targets.

Instead they make safer claims like - "Making long URLs usable!" or "we will create a tiny URL that will not break in email postings". Wink

You should try www.dot.tk. You will be able to make a shorter domain.
statusfashions
i wouldnt use tiny url after all. paticularly if i want my website to be re-directed.. instead use a dot tk domain.
youi can get it absolutely free from www.dot.tk ... i had my accounts from there.
there are many others who offer such mini domains....
uni.cc for example.

That's a nifty service. Anyone know how it works? They must make a record of every url that is typed and assign a unique 'shorter' url. However, the would require a great deal of storage space, especially since the urls never expire.
smokey4life
Well truthfully these services are mainly for people who have little homepages and websites with extremely large urls that wish to make them a little simpler to give out to friends and family, not to make it easier for you to get to a page as numerous people have said before me that's what the bookmarks are for. I have also noticed this before i found freehost when i was using a free service that allowed me web space but the URL was just ridiculous on the size. However they did make it a little better but not by much and sometimes even made it more confusing. If you only using these services for personal use i would suggest using your bookmarks if your using it for public use then i guess it all depends on how long and confusing your URL is. Now i'm not allowed to spam here but i have found a great service that allows you to specify the name of the domain then you have a selection of .Com's or .biz, or .goodsite etc. to choose from i think around 100 different ending to choose from if i remember correctly. Either way it was a great service and i would definitely use it again if needed. Again i can not spam here so if someone is in need of a service such as this get in contact with me personally Via personal messaging or e-mail. I hope i can help some of you looking for good services such as this.

A lot of services like MSN Space image galleries use gargentuan image links, which may cause trouble in some forms. Or posting generated media links on other fora.

An example of an msn space link :
