Chinese man buys MiG through eBay
A Chinese businessman has bought an old MiG-21f fighter jet for nearly $25,000 (£14,000) on eBay to decorate his office, a Chinese newspaper reports.
Zhang Cheng bought the Soviet-made jet from a seller in the United States, where it is said to be in excellent condition though last flown in 1995.
"I have the buying power and my company has an empty space where I can display the plane," he told the Beijing News.
But it was not immediately clear if Mr Zhang needed a permit to import it.
According to the new owner, the jet was retired by the Czech air force.
"I don't know if this jet plane is a banned item," Mr Zhang said, adding that one Chinese company had bought a retired Soviet aircraft carrier to convert into a theme park.
A note on the eBay site said the plane, which is currently located in Lewiston, Idaho, had been inspected by a museum and found to be in excellent condition.
The first MiG-21 prototype flew in 1956 and came into service with the Soviet air force in 1959, becoming one of the most mass-produced combat aircraft since World War II.
The name of the seller was not given. |

Need a more solid source?
wow...i'll get it
...I think eBay somebody will sell planets on eBay...And who wants to buy a Fighter Jet,the person only can do Civil War with his Fighter and the price is so cheap...
I'm very interesting in finding out how the seller managed to get that in the first place. Damn the eBay policy of not givign out the seller's ID
Though I 'm pretty sure they'd give all the info they had had it been the US govt asking for it
You are right, they do indeed not want to get into any legal messes.
They ll blabber it out like a eager bunch of kids.
But, was the package and delivery free?
A plane that old qualifies as a museum peice, pretty much. It's not exactly a frontline fighter. At least, not in any modernized country.
I want a fighter Jet. The things you find on eBay i swear. There are just too many things to be sold. I would love to have that. It would be interesting. It will probley sell to like a collector or somethign though
(holy shit 50 posts today)
I'm more interested in the Aircraft Carrier than the Jet. Good price though, but what does it cost to repair? javascript:emoticon('
')
Twisted Evil
Lets face it, you can buy and sell anything on ebay. I wonder what feedback was left?

I've heard stories about trying to sell real estate on the moon, The same way they did it a few decades ago because of a loophole in the international laws.
I use Mig's in C&c but they are not that old!
Interesting find!
Seems like a sweet deal. You can now purchase a fighter jet for the same price one would normally pay for a new Kia.
I went onto E-bay motors --> aircraft once looking around and found something like that.
I found an old MIG (possibly even the one you're refering to) and a bear bomber.
They had been de-militarized (weapons, wepon mounts, targeting systems removed), but still worked fine (according to the ad).
They were also dirt cheap (as far as military jets go). The only problem is, how could you possibly find and afford replacement parts when something breaks?
You can openly purchase Russian and Chinese surplus aircraft and vehicles on numerous sites not just E-Bay. As for the alarmist speech, don't believe the hype. There are strict restrictions as to the level of functionality for this equipment. Guns are non-functioning if present at all and most are just parts. The Russian military was in such shambles when it started selling off it's aircraft to China that most of them are non-functioning buy this point anyway. A MIG-21 is a very old fighter that poses no threat, if functional (which is highly unlikely based on the price) it's weapons systems and electronics would be largely removed or non-functioning.
As for parts...you can find bulk lots on certain websites selling huge crates of engines and parts for very cheap. So you need a hanger, a mechanic and a lot of free time if you really want a MIG.

Actually you can easily get a license to fly it, any standard flight school can help you there. As for the purpose, it was actually to be used for a decoration and nothing more. Check the original article that started this thread.
yeah, indeed. But how would something break if you dont fly the damn thing? Rust? most company's who buy a Mig just for showoff usually paint it so it lasts longer... so replacing parts is like telling the pope he needs to be in top shape just in case he ever gets married again.

I doubt that if it was even real, that it would be flyable, especially for $25k.
Wow! Now even philanthropists can affort one if it's true. Still, the source of the news is needed. No more futher comments.
