WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A jury has awarded a West Palm Beach woman $1.27 million after part of her leg was amputated because it became infected with maggots following surgery at a hospital.

Mary Stewart sued Renova Health Center in Lake Park and its accounting services company, Universal Health Management, alleging hospital staff failed to treat her wound properly.

The jury found the hospital negligent. It was not immediately clear how Wednesday's judgment will be paid because Universal Health Management is no longer in business and new owners have taken over Renova, the defendants' attorney Andy McCumber said Thursday.

"Everybody who testified was long since a former employee," McCumber said.

Stewart, 72, alleged in her lawsuit filed last year that hundreds of maggots were discovered in the flesh of her left foot 18 days after she underwent surgery at Renova. Her leg was so infected it had to be amputated to her knee.

Doctors performed the surgery in an attempt to restore blood flow to Stewart's gangrene infected foot.

Even though nurses tended to the wound, "rotting flesh attracted some flies," said Renova's attorney Andy McCumber. He maintained that employees provided adequate care.

Stewart alleged that doctors and nurses didn't do regular checks of her wound or provide proper medication.

"I figured I was going to come out of there a whole person," she said.

Now the sad thing is, even if they did tend to the wound as procedure suggests they should have, it still could have happened. So I don't know who to disbelieve. It's definately not the first case of maggots found in a living person.
I also find her last quote sad "I figured I was going to come out of there a whole person" -so you're less of a person now? give me a break

That is pretty nasty. Laying there, 72 years old, feeble. Then a fly lands on your open wound and sticks its ass under the flesh. I'd say she deserves it. Usually the wound is covered for just that reason. Just a simple piece of cloth that is taped down will keep the flies from burrowing under the skin. It's not that much to ask for right?

Oh my God!

It must been painful for a old lady. Where's her families? Nobody found it out early?

Shame of this hospital and its adminstative! They should be punished, too.
