on a system running win 98se with amd athlon 3000+ via mb and 256 mb ram i am not able to run msdos.whenever i try to run iy it gives an error saying that there is shortage of conventional memory.i increased all memory settings from auto to maximum value by right clicking the program menu but still no use.what should i do now

Are you talking about running the dos prompt within windows, or rebooting into 'dos mode'?
Without knowing the answer to that my suggestion is thus:
1st: run a memory checking application (preferably a bootable one) to make sure you don't have a bad memory chip. If asked, make sure to check the 'conventional' or 'sytem' memory.
2nd: make sure there are no programs running (expecialy very old ones) that may be using up your 640k of conventional memory. Perhaps the culprit is a driver for some very old hardware. Look for things that might have been used before extended memory became common.
