I have an IBM R40 thinkpad. I need a sound card not high priced to support say a 4.1 or 5.1 surround sound system. I do need good sound quality so please make suggestions.

Yep, I think Creative is the only current company that creates external sound cards. I could be wrong though... Although I don't know if Creative ever fixed their bloated driver/softwares installation packaging.
Nope, their drivers still suck and their programs for the drivers come with AOL crap installing all over your drives...
Icemat makes a good usb soundcard, but it is for headsets...
