WELL I myself do manual submissions. Well I think that one needs to submit his url's to only three search engines. Google, Yahoo and Msn. thats it. But, you can also do free bulk submissions that are available for free like http://www.submitexpress.com/submit.html .
Hi,
As far as I'm concerned, I also try to do it one at a time.
Why ?
1 / I'm looking for qualified visitors (ie. actuel people that may find my site useful, not just bots ans spiders)
2 / That way I can control that the operation went well
3 / I keep tracks of all my submitting actions, so I can later on check wether the crawler of the search engines have visited, when and how : that way it is easier to understand how things work, because you're in control from A to Z.

I used it too but I dont know for sure if it worked..
Search engine submission .. well what matters is big three Google , yahoo and MSN there are few others but not important. So i submit to those 3 search engines manually. and for others i just use a submitter.
Important thing is submitting your site to web directories more you submit better result you get. specially if those directories have high Google PR.

I think that the success road to the top places in search engines is to leaving that job to be done by search engines themselves
I've submitted my site to google again and again and again, without
improvement.
Just be patient...

Search Engines will do their Job if they find/see your link by any means. The best method is to submit your site to lot of link directories.
For the love of god!
