HANOVER, Pa. - A 13-year-old boy told police his mother required him to do his homework first thing when he got off the school bus, then smoked marijuana with him as a reward.

The mother said she had been smoking marijuana with her son since he was 11, usually as a reward, according to court documents.

The police interview came after officers executed a search warrant at the woman's home last weekend and seized marijuana, an array of drug paraphernalia and $600 in cash that she said belonged to a drug dealer, court documents said.

Amanda Lynn Livelsberger, 30, faces charges of marijuana possession, corruption of minors, endangering the welfare of children and possession with intent to distribute drug paraphernalia, police said.

A telephone listing for Livelsberger couldn't be found and it wasn't clear if she had an attorney.

All I can says is WTF? When I was growing up I was taught that doing drugs as ad but if I wanted to try them and admitted to my folks that I did it was all good. But a mother rewarding her son with it for him doing his homework? What is this world comming to? Where is the Father?

Dang, I was about to post this...Oh well, It's still a funny article to read about.

I voted Yes for the simple reason this woman is out of her mind. To promote drug use as a reward to a child is just plain crazy...not to mention illegal and immoral. This is not funny in any stretch of the imagination, I feel bad for the kid that's going to grow up believing drug use is alright because his Mother showed/taught him it was. It also makes you wonder what he in turn is going to teach his children.

she seems like a single parent, who is struggling to raise a child, i guess that can cause some crazy ideas for good behavior....i guess

why bother doing the homework if this kids just gunna be a drug addict and fail at life? www.youfail.org mom, www.youfail.org

I voted for "who cares" because I can't honestly come to the conclusion that the kid was in an abusive situation. I agree with rmgk that this is another struggling single parent. She needs help and a second chance, not a bunch of uptight hipocrits who want her son taken away even though they are equally quilty of spoiling their kids with caffeine, sugar, ipods, or whatever.

Now I don't advocate giving pot to kids, especially for homework because it causes you to forget, react slower, and it is a depressant. I also don't adovate letting your kids sit in front of the boob tube for hours, letting them pig out on junk food, or smoking cigarettes in front of them. But no one ever says that parents who allow these things should have their kids taken away from them.

Definate yes... I had a friend who's mother was a total pothead and used to try to get him to smoke pot, she would be passed out on the floor after doing drugs everyday and he sorta curved to the darkside, I'm afraid his life is going to be very sad and short =/

the way i see it the poor little pot-head is screwed either way. Staying with a druggy-mummy guarantees a sad life. going in to the foster care business is no sweet deal either. i would choose the foster-care route because at least there is a chance of ending up with a nice family. however, he is already 13 so its going to be hard to get and keep him on the straight and narrow after his mother had him all over the damn place.

All i can say is good luck little guy, and bong-water with beer is not as good as it seems!!!

the way I see it is his "mommies gift" to him has quite possibly already taken hold, and the poor little bugger, and whatever family he ends up with, is going to have to deal with this mess for sometime. There are times that I simply can't understand what a parent is thinking when dealing with children....don't they realize, or care, that what they do is a lesson for thier kids?

Sorry, I tend to go overboard when it comes kids...I have one.

@lyndonray

wine as bongwater is even nastier Exclamation

Thats weak. The brain doesn't stop developing until 25, so she cut her kid off from nearly half his developmental life.

but quite a bit of it depends on the parent's upbringing as well. if they had a dysfunctional family, then chances are, that will spill over onto the next generation. A screwed-up up-bringing will be all the parents know so what kind of a job do you really expect them do with their own kids.

Really sad though!!

MYTH -- smoking marijuana makes you stupid

there are many intelligent successful people who smoke marijuana. How many parents do you know have a genuine relationship with thier 13 year old. There are 13 year olds in my town that are carring guns and all they know is hustling on the streets. This 13 year old was not only being encouraged to go to school but to also to do his homework. Also the mother placed a strict time schedule to the activity. instilling her child with a sense of responsibility. no one says but i am willing to bet that the student was getting good grades and tested well, along with probably was very well liked among his peers.

It would be the same as buying him beer or some other alcoholic product and drinking with him instead of smoking pot. The issue is that the kid is a minor and it is illegal. Hard to say if the kid should be taken away, depends on a lot of factors, not the least of which is the welfare of the kid and whether he would be better off.

I say NO. Of all the horrible things parents can do around their children, this hardly is high on the list. Yes, I think the mother was misguided by offering it as a 'reward' for homework, but this is not a situation where the child should be removed.

My girlfriend grew up in a house where her mother smoked pot. A lot. If anything, it has helped her stay away from drugs. She still has a very loving relationship with her mother, and always has, but also has seen that she doesn't care for the effects marijuana has (from an outsider's point of view).

Think of situations where it could have been so much worse. A parent giving their child alcohol- hey, THAT happens more often than this. Why don't THOSE children get put in protective services? Or what about setting up their children as chain-smokers of tobacco? See, one of the handy things about marijuana is that most users don't smoke dozens of them a day. You can't.

And for those of you that see marijuana as equal to any other 'illegal' drug out there, take this into consideration: How do you think the impact on this child's life would have differed had the drug been different? Heroin, maybe? Hell, they'd probably be dead by now. Cocaine, PCP, acid, mushrooms, oxycotin... even peyote, a low-level hallucingen used by Native American tribes for thousands of years (at least Western/Southern tribes) in ceremonies - is more extreme of a drug than marijuana.

Take that into account.

Sounds good to me!

I wish my mother would have got high with me just for doing my homework. All I ever got was a beating if I came home with bad grades. Maybe I would have done more homework and gotten better grades if I had been paid, with either dope or money, for the VERY HARD WORK I did in school every day. It's only fair. If she got paid for doing her work, why shouldn't I get paid for doing mine?
