.htaccess again

Scorpio
I created a htaccess file and added some content for displaying a custom page instead of the 404 error page

So now when I enter the location of a non existent file on my domain I get that custom page I created

But when I try to edit/rename/copy the .htaccess file, it says ERROR:FILE NOT FOUND

What is the problem?

kindly Help

But why do you rename the .htaccess file? It's the instruction file for apache, if it doesn't find it, then your code won't work.

No I did not rename it,

I wanted to edit it. I clicked on the edit link.

It said "error: document not found"

So i tried clicking on copy and rename to see if those links work but I got the same error

So how do I edit it.

Though the document is not found, the command I had given in the .htaccess file earlier (404 redirection, see my last post) is working.

Please clear this up for me

In which directory is the .htaccess file at the moment?
Scorpio
In the directory that contains the following:

public_html
bash.logout
mail
domains
{some more}...

I mean, the outermost level of directories, outside the public_html directory

I don't know if this will definatley work, but try putting the .htaccess in the public_html directory instead.
