Parking in the robotic car park on Dubai's Al Maktoum Street takes about a minute and there is no need for an attendant. It operates via a missed call on a driver's mobile phone. A number of similar car parks are set to be built in the city.

Dubai: The first automated robotic car parking facility opened on Sunday in Dubai.

A driver, once in front of the facility called Robot Park, activates the system through a missed call on their mobile. The system will then acknowledge the command by initiating a complete system review, diagnostic tests and safety checks.

The gate will open and the motorist drives onto a parking platform. Once the car is on the platform, the motorist gets out.

The system will automatically move the car up to its pre-assigned parking space. Instructions are provided on a television screen and also via voice instructions.

To retrieve the car, the driver places another miss call on the given number. The car descends to the ground floor after a security check and a gate opens to drive it outside. It takes about a minute to park the car and the same time to retrieve it.

The first-of-its-kind in the region, the robot car park on Al Maktoum Street covers 7.5 square metres and can park 16 cars at a time.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, Acting Director-General of Dubai Municipality, who inaugurated the new parking facility on Sunday said it was a model project.

He said similar automated parking facilities would be built in different parts of the city, especially in congested areas.

"A number of multistorey car parks will be built in Dubai by private companies on a "build-operate-transfer' (BOT) basis."

For the first six months of its trial period, municipality staff will use the car park during office hours and it will be free to the public after office hours. Later, Dh10 per hour will be charged and the money will be paid via a mobile phone.

Eisa Al Maidour, Assistant Director-General for General Projects Affairs, said the Robot Park carried great significance as it took up only a small space.

"Normally, the design of the structure looks like a multistorey pillar that can contain a large number of cars. This mechanically controlled car parking system is not found in many advanced countries. It contributes in enhancing the urban look of Dubai. It also helps in controlling the public parking system and reducing traffic jams in Dubai," said Al Maidour.

Nicholas Fuad Amiouni, Design and Production Manager of East & West Robotics LLC, said the automated parking phenomenon utilises various electromechanical processes, complemented with artificial intelligence. He said the company intends to trial the system in other emirates as well.

"Dubai has always been the pioneer in bringing the world's most advanced systems to the UAE. A robot parking facility for 500 cars will cost Dh20 million."

How the system operates

- The system is activated through a missed call.

- It will then acknowledge the command by initiating a complete system review, diagnostic tests and safety checks.

- The gate will open and you drive inside the gate on a parking platform. Once your car is on the platform, you will have to get out of the car.

- The system will automatically ascend the car to its pre-assigned parking space. Instructions are provided on a television screen and also voice instructions.

- To retrieve your car, you will place another miss call on the given number. The system will initiate a complete review, diagnostic test and safety check. The car descends to the ground floor after a security check.
