What do you experienced Frihosters consider fair rates?

Traveller
Although I don't plan on opening up a complete shop here, I have already helped a few people, but without having ANY idea what the typical rates are. In one case, I even negotiated a LOWER rate than offered, since the task was not particularly difficult, and the offer seemed too high.

Many of you have posted Frih$ amounts for graphic work, but I haven't seen any "rate schedules" for PHP, MySQL, and Javascript work. I want to be as fair as possible: too high would not be fair to the "clients," but too low would not be fair to others performing similar tasks. Thus, I do not wish to cheat one or undercut the others and, at the same time, not cut myself short, either.

Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It primarily depends on the degree of difficulty of the task for the one who is doing it.

E.g I might find something difficult which may be very easy for you.

In that case I am bound to charge more because it will cost me more time.

But since it is easier for you, you may charge less.

That is how it goes.

But when the client offers a large amount of Frih$ only some of them may be exaggerating but most know what is to be done.

It is better to choose the rate based on your experience.

I would suggest you to keep the rates custom and inform the price once the client asks you to do something after giving the details

Scripting requires meticulous conventration and must be error free, so it necessary that it be accurate and flawless

It should also be working exactly as per the client's needs.

This differs from person to person, so you better charge them based on how difficult you feel it is.

If you look at my rates in comparison with some of the other ppl who do graphic design youll see that my prices stay constant and if anything i offer special promotions. I have seen many ppl charging high amounts for extremely crappy sigs and logos. Also ive seen ppl with ridiculously low prices for which posting more than two times a day would provide the same income as selling about 5 sigs.

I believe its every frihosters choice but i run my store like a bizness and not like a monopoly. My prices are based on how much i would pay for my own graphics.

If your good then its a lot less labor for a quality product therefore your total price should go down if your smart. Minimize cost maximize profit its a win win situation.

The important thing is to be fair. You need to see the difficulty and the job they want done. Some things are going to be easier then others. Try to get what they want the first time so you don't have to charge more. So communicate with your customers the best you can. Try and get some reviews too. The more reviews that are good the more you can charge. When first starting out you want low prices to get bussiness. But after you get more and more then start to up your price. Also every now and then offer deals and things like that. Very Happy

And be submissive if you screw up then discount or redo it quickly and keep your rates so that everyone can use your work. also be clear in your shops policys

Well, it really depends on the job in dispute.

Don't wind up like me, offering huge amounts for small, simple tasks. If I didn't do that, I would be at over 1000 by now. I get it from my mom, she's always overly-generous.

As far as Javascript and PHP go, it depends on the degree of work that one devotes to it. Also, if you build up a good reputation by selling them at meager prices, then people will be more willing to pay higher amounts for it.

What's wrong with undercutting others? Their is no Fair Competition Laws in Frihost, Plus if you dont undercut others, Others will undercut you.

Yes its a dog eat dog world out there and if you can be cheaper then by almighty you might get the job but still you got to have the goods. And ppl dont be fooled by some frihosters with their never changing styles and limited supply of fonts to fit your kneeds. Dont settle for good product always by somethng youll keep for ever.

Thats why i offer my services at low rates because for one i enjoy making graphics and 2 because im really fast and i will acctually sit there and play around with about 2 or 3 things before i figure out which way i want to make someones logo or sig. Also a big thing is that originalty should be more expenisive. Just putting a gradient and some different text dont count as unique.

If you want some generic logo thats fine with me because the customer is always right its just that at prices just a little higher why settle for mediocrity.

Its your future choose wisely, and you might just stay alive.

Well, anything I choose to do here will not be graphics related - I'm NOT very good with that - but the principles that all of you have mentioned are good and helpful, and I will keep them in mind.

BTW, DeFwh, your avatar and signature logo are absolutely beautiful (I'm very clunky in that department, and would never even come close)!
