Fastest base linux with no tweaking.

Does anyone have any ideas on what linux out there is the fastest or makes the most use of hardware? I know gentoo does a good job with getting the most out of hardware but I'm interested in knowing what linux is faster with out changing the kernel. I guess a base install would just be base linux with X and a light weight window manager being used as a workstation.
