German Woman on Trial in Deaths of Babies

Back to the point I made a while ago on here, why are the penalties for murdering children so small?
That's not even 2 years per child! They treat it like they are nothing until they are named. She still killed - I don't care if they were newborn or 30yrs old. I don't care if it was her children or some country's leader. She killed. 9 times. Knowingly. Alcohol isn't an excuse.
She should be sterilized. She should not be allowed near children.
9 children. If it wasn't newborns, if they weren't hers... she's be classified a serial killer. She'd be a mass murderer. Well she still is. She still killed 9 people.

| FRANKFURT AN DER ODER, Germany - A woman accused of killing nine of her newborn babies went on trial Thursday in a bizarre case that shocked Germany.
Police arrested Sabine Hilschinz after discovering the remains of the nine infants in July buried in flower pots and a fish tank in the garden of her parents' home in a village in eastern Germany near the Polish border. Hilschinz, 40, appeared Thursday before a state court where she faces eight charges of manslaughter. She could be jailed for up to 15 years if convicted. The statute of limitations had run out in the death of a ninth child. The court earlier dropped murder charges against Hilschinz, arguing there was insufficient evidence that she had intended to hide her alleged crime, a key element of murder under German law. Defense lawyer Matthias Schoeneburg told the court his client wished to make no statement. Presiding Judge Matthias Fuchs instead read out an account of her testimony at a hearing after her arrest. Hilschinz told a judge last August that she could clearly remember only two of the births because she was drunk when she went into labor with the other seven. "We already had three children, and my husband didn't want any more children," she said, according to the transcript. She said she had drowned her sorrow over the babies' deaths in more alcohol and had not had herself sterilized because she feared a gynecologist would notice traces of the births. Prosecutors say DNA tests prove that the children, who are all believed to have died shortly after birth between 1988 and 1998, belonged to Hilschinz and her former husband. Hilschinz, who was led into the courtroom in handcuffs and looked straight ahead for much of the session, listened calmly as the transcript was read out. Her 43-year-old ex-husband was called as a witness, but the former officer with East Germany's secret police also refused to testify. According to prosecutors, the woman wrapped the corpses in plastic bags and buried them in the flower pots, which initially were kept on the balcony of her apartment. It remains unclear how the pregnancies went unnoticed by family members and friends. Hilschinz has three adult children and one young daughter. |
