Hello There..

I personally love scotland, and would like to visit it sometime..

Where do you live in scotland?

Dundee?Aberdeen? Motherwell?
honestman
Hi Scorpio, I am from none of these Scottish cities that you mention, but rather from the 'Auld Toon' of Ayr on the West Coast. It is from Alloway, close by that Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet was born.

He referred to 'Auld Ayr wham ne'r a toon surpasses for honest men and bonnie lasses'.

definately worth a visit if you are up here.

Where are you from?

Wow, cool! Cool Cool Cool

What about the 11th of april?
honestman
Here are the historical references that I have for APRIL 11.

I wouldnt mind some feedback on what you think.

1839 - Death of John Galt (Poet)

Despite his successes in Canada, John fell foul of some enemies and returned to Scotland almost penniless. He wrote a number of books including ‘The Ayrshire Legatees’ in 1820, and ‘Lawrie Todd’ in 1830. He was famed for his portrayal of country life. He died in Greenock on 11th April 1839.

1857 - Birth of John Davidson (Poet)

John was born in Barrhead on this day in 1857 and became one of the great masters of the narrative lyrical ballad. Having studied at Edinburgh University, John went into teaching. In 1890 he moved to London where he practised journalism and wrote some novels and short stories. His breakthrough came in 1893 with ‘Fleet Street Eclogues’ and ‘Ballads and Songs’ a year later.

1882 – The Battle of the Braes

The Battle of Braes on the Isle of Skye was fought on this day in 1882. Highlanders had been farming the land between Portree and Sligachan, locally known as The Braes, for centuries. Landowners, to whom the crofters paid rent, decided that they could exploit this land for higher profit and revoked some of the crofters rights to graze animals. In 1882 the crofters refused to pay their rent until their rights were returned and the landowners went to law to have them evicted. The sheriff sent officers to serve the eviction notices but crofters burnt the notices. 50 policemen from Inverness were sent and a skirmish ensued. Their resistance was strong and, as public sympathy grew, Parliament decided not to send in the army. Instead a series of measures were passed granting crofters more security in their tenure.

1951 - Stone of Destiny Recovered at Arbroath

Ian Hamilton and Alan Stuart having ‘stolen’ the stone of Destiny took it to Glasgow where Robert Gray, a local councillor and stonemason repaired it. On 11th April 1951, a group of people led by Ian and Robert arrived at Arbroath Abbey with the stone and, draped with the Scottish Saltire, laid it on the ruined alter. Within hours police officers from ‘Scotland Yard’ arrived to reclaim the stone and take it back to London. The Government announced that no action would be taken against the conspirators. It was 45 years before the stone was returned officially to Scotland and the conspirators were special guests at the ceremony in St Giles Cathedral.

1988 - Sandy Lyle Becomes First Scot to Win the US Masters Golf

Sandy Lyle won the US Masters golf title at Augusta on this day in 1988 to become the first Scot to win the competition. He won on the final hole with a brilliant birdie and a one under par round of 71, seven under for the tournament, from American Mark Calcavecchia who praised his performance as “simply awesome”.

Sandy Lyle said after his historic win “I have nothing but Scottish blood in my veins - and i’m proud of it. I cannot tell you how proud I am to be the first Scot - first Briton - to win the Masters...” Sandy was too modest to accept the accolades, and admitted he found it difficult to breathe as the ball teatered at the rim of the hole before dropping to the roars of the usually partisan American crowd. Hailed as unbeatable, the Scot was not just the first Briton to win the masters, but the first to win three tournaments in America, the first to win a million dollars in the US and the first masters champion since 1960 to win the coveted green jacket on the last hole

Awesome, mate!

I can't tell you why, but I have this romantic view of Scottland. Never been
there, though, but perhaps one day...

History and dates are quite strange. It's a weak connection, beeing born on
the same day some events took place, but it is a connection, and that's enough
to take an interest and learn a few things I formerlly hadn't got a clue about.

Thx for sharing!
