Google Tips

satheesh
Hi,

Here are great tips to use Google. The multi faces of Google. I have given some. Please keep them updated with whatever you find Google useful as.

Phrase your question in the form of an answer. So instead of typing, "What is the average rainfall in the Amazon basin?", you might get better results by typing "The average rainfall in the Amazon basin is."

This is an old one, but very important: Put quotes around phrases that must be searched together. If you put quotes around "electric curtains," Google won't waste your time finding one set of Web pages containing the word "electric" and another set containing the word "curtains."

Similarly, put a hyphen right before any word you want screened out. If you're looking up dolphins, for example, you'll have to wade through a million Miami Dolphins pages unless you search for "dolphins -Miami."

Google is a global White Pages and Yellow Pages. Search for "phonebook:home depot norwalk, ct," Google instantly produces the address and phone number of the Norwalk Home Depot. This works with names ("phonebook:robert jones las vegas, NV") as well as businesses.
Don't put any space after "phonebook." And in all of the following examples, don't type the quotes I have shown you here.

You left out an important one: define:apples
Obviously you replace the word apples with whatever you wish to define.

Just give you the definition of words and what not.

Those are real cool! Razz

A knew some of them but not the hyphen and phonebook.

Go to: http://www.google.com/help/basics.html and then you can learn them all.

Also check out: http://www.google.com/help/refinesearch.html

Search on! Wink

I'm the same as dray101 with knowing those except the Phonebook and the hyphen.

Thanks!

Google also works as a calculator. One of the cooler features I find usefull is unit conversions.

ie. "1 ft to cm" would convert feet to centimeters.

here are some of the things you mentioned:

like if you need to search for igcse past papers, then dont waste your time, just type past papers + igsce to get the selected results only.
Nice tricks.

That define: one is helpful, didn't know about it.

interesting, always seem to get false websites when searching. The sites never have what i want and they always seem to be offtopic. I guess i'll try this out, should be interesting to see if it works. Good find.

just type the below into Google's search box.

That doesn't surprise me that much. But I know a better trick. Type "half a cup in teaspoons" and see what will happen. Wink

Well, it's not a tip, but a funny thing my friend has discovered. See how Google is helpful when you type somehing like . / ^ or - and search. But if you type * it seems more talkative Smile

One more thing. The number of search results for 'a' frightens me.
falconfx
Very good tips! Wink

I may suggest also this one: add in the search field "filetype:ext" to find files with a specific extension (e.g. "filetype:pdf").

Of course, don't type the quotes! Very Happy
Jack_Hammer
My main tip, would be to type 'www.google.co.uk' into your address bar, then try searching.

There's a lot, I mean a lot of different GOogle search options.
Examples (however I'm not sure if they're right)
conversion:2 centimetres to inches
length:

I know there are ones like these, but I'm not sure about the two I just said.

Never hurts to try, though.

Hey thanks man! I'd written de codes somewhere but I lost the paper.

Hi,
I ahve added some more tips that I got.

Google is a package tracker. Type a FedEx or UPS package number (just the digits); when you click Search, Google offers a link to its tracking information.

Google is a calculator. Type in an equation ("32+2345*3-234=").

Google is a units-of-measurement converter. Type "teaspoons in a gallon," for example, or "centimeters in a foot."

Google is a stock ticker. Type in AAPL or MSFT, for example, to see a link to the current Apple or Microsoft stock price, graphs, financial news and so on.

Google is an atlas. Type in an area code, like 212, to see a Mapquest
map of the area.

Hi,

I forgot to tell. I have got a superb PDF book "Gmail Hack". This book cooks up in and out of the Gmail. What you want to know and do not want to know about gmail are given here.

If you get to lay your hands upon this book, read it till you are sure that you can extract the entire juice out of your Gmail account.

It is also a great read with pointers to others good sites and also giving guidelines of appropriate usage of your Gmail account.

Hi,
I have got more and more tips for you here.

Google is an aviation buff. Type in a flight number like "United 22" for a link to a map of that flight's progress in the air. Or type in the tail number you see on an airplane for the full registration form for
that plane.

Google is the Department of Motor Vehicles. Type in a VIN (vehicle identification number, which is etched onto a plate, usually on the door frame, of every car), like "JH4NA1157MT001832," to find out the car's year, make and model.

For hours of rainy-day entertainment, visit http://labs.google.com. Here, you'll find links to new, half-finished Google experiments-like Google Voice, in which you call (650) 623-6706, speak the words you want to search for and then open your browser to view the results. Disclaimer: It wasn't working when I tried it. (Ditto a lot of these experiments.)

Hi,

These tips were found by my friend. These are also great.

Google is Wal-Mart's computer. Type in a UPC bar code number, such as "036000250015," to see the description of the product you've just "scanned in."

Poke around the "Services & Tools" link on the Google.com home page and you'll find some of the better-known lesser-known Google features, if that makes any sense. For example, there's Froogle (product search), News, Groups (Internet discussion boards), Google Catalogs (hundreds of scanned-in product
catalogs), Images (find graphics and photos from other people's Web sites), Blogger (publish your own online journal), Google language translation, Google Answers (pay a couple of bucks to have a professional researcher find the answers for you) and much more.

Download and install the Google toolbar. Not only does it put the Google search box into your browser full-time, but it also blocks pop-up ads and fills in forms for you. For Windows at http://toolbar.google.com. (Ad blocking, form-filling and Google's search box are already built into the Apple's Web browser, Safari.)

Hi,

Found some more tips that I presume would be useful. Please reply as to the wrth of the tips.

Google also offers suggestions based on what u type...
But, use this instead ...
http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en

This feature learns and adapts to ur usage when u use Google's personalized search (google.com/ig).

i.e., If u often search for tutorials, and type "Java "
it will offer suggestions for Java Tutorials and others and not
"Java Programming" etc.,!!!

Hi,

Am posting here one tip regarding the usage of Google. If any of you trip upon any site giving out worthwhile information on how to use Google then please post a link to the site here and also give all your tips here.

You can use google as a dictionary to so if you want to find out what forum means just type the following

Quote:
define:forum

and google will display the definition from various sources

I have also found some very useful tips about using Gmail to its fullest. Anybody needing that please reply to this post. Also say whether I need to start a new post for that or shall I continue the Gmail tips also here itself.

Okay here's my two cents. Google actually serves up different search results depending on the country you're connected to the internet from. I've found that search results will differ even between google.ca (Canada) and google.com (which I'm presuming is the default for the U.S.). So if you go to Google and you keep getting redirected to your country-specific version of Google and instead you would like to go directly to and search from google.com then enter the following URL into your address bar and hit Go:

http://www.google.com/ncr

Nice i never know that google could do that much stuff, Thanks for telling Smile will help in the future
