Hello, I am fairly new here and to the world of web sites. Through the help of a few friends I got sucked into the internet. I have learned the basic tags of HTML and its uses. I could give you a simple page with a simple layout and design, but really nothing more then that. I am handy with Photoshop and can do some fairly good looking designs for a website, but I don't have the skills to put it all together.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should go to improve my skills? Or should I just get someone to do it for me and focus on the content of my site?

well, i think you still go to the w3school, they have manylessons and teachs many codes and programming. Hmtl, php, mySQL, javascrpt. css. etc etc.
I like to look at other people's website and look at their layouts and check the "source" with shows you the html, and learn how to organize html and files and other stuff.
You should also hav confidence in your self, and just try makeing websites, and you can slowing update your website layout etc etc

rainynightstarz has some good advice there. If you have HTML down fairly good then you need CSS to help with your lay outs. Looking at the source of other folks sites is always good, but the best advice rainynightstarz gave was to believe in yourself. Have fun building websites. Make a personal page that you can play with and have a good time with. Leran new things. Make it a game or puzzle that you solve by making it work right then add new layers and knowledge too. Do your own little CSS zen garden if you want. Experiment and explore and have a good time. Be artistic and make it about form and function.

well, I do play around with personal pages. I try to do everything from scratch, I dont like templates. The only one I can think of that I actually update every now and then is: www.geocities.com/Jovollo/

The only thing that is there for is to display some of the work ive done with photoshop. It really doesn't require any HTML skills at all.

Well, I would recommend to first to learn CSS, as it's recommended to be used on the web nowadays. Then, go learn how you make layouts. Try the layout resovior at bluerobot. Try it. Once you've mastered that, go to some random websites with good designs, and study the ways of the web. Look at the graphics, layout, creativity, text, especially colour schemes. Some good CSS designs are featured at CSS Beauty. I would also recommend reading a book. Try reading some web design websites, such as http://www.mezzoblue.com or http://www.stopdesign.com. Once you've done that, find designs that you really like, take aspects of them, and use the ideas in a new design that you create.
By then, you shall have a hang of things. Try to make some more designs. Your good Photoshop skills will really complement your web designing skills.
