Anime Music

Traveller
One of the interesting things about anime is that if often has some really good music to go with it. Although I have not watched nearly as much anime as most fans that I know, I have really enjoyed the music of Hikaru no Go, Jungle wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu, and Initial D.

Any other recommendations?

Here's an oddity for you. Ergo Proxy, great cyber-punkish anime kinda reminisant of Ghost in the Shell in some ways. Opening and ending music by Radiohead.

Maybe that's not all that exotic for you and it certainly isn't Japanese, but yeah, there are a few animes with some pretty good music. Then again, a lot of it is really some weird J-Pop stuff that really isn't to my taste at all. Some of it is just weird like the opening song for season two of Ah, My Goddess TV. Okay the series is about three Norse Goddesses living with a Japanese collage student, so why are there bagpipes with Japanese lyrics? That is weird (though it is really quite nice too).

Full Metal Alchemist has nice beginning/ending songs. Ready Steady Go and Undo are addicting Very Happy So does Rurouni Kenshin.

Trigun has good instrumentals like H.T. and Blue Funk.
mtoni
I love the Naruto music.. I created some videos for school projects with this music as background music
Mai Hime is good too.
The piano music of FF is good too Smile
AdamantMonk
If your'e a fan of Cowboy Bebop, check out The Seatbelts. They did most of the music for the series.

I listen to practiclly all the OSTs from the anime I've seen. Recently I've been listening to alot of stuff from Eureka 7.
TeK
I loved the music in Mai HiME, Shakugan no Shana, and some of the music from Mai Otome. Fate Stay Night and Shingetsutan Tsukihime has some pretty good music too.
NewGuyinTown
I like the Air TV OST, Mai Hime/Otome OST, FMA OST, and the Gundam Seed OST... all I can think of for now...

Waiting for the Fate Stay Night OST... if there is any...
Game Fortress
Anime music always gets on my nerves. It has a quality to it that I find extremley irritating. Dont ask me what it is. I dont know the answer.

I have recently been listening to Inuyasha Songs and if you like anime music they are some of the best to listen to here are a few:

Every Heart
My Will
Change the World
Dearest
Fukai Mori
No Words

I have always been a fan of anime music; if I did not like a particular series for whatever reason I may dislike them for, there's a good chance that I will still like the music from the series itself. I think the most recent occurrence of this for me would be the Hellsing television series; I thought the music was great for the series, but the series itself was not as exciting (if not a bit confusing).

Though as of this moment, I've been listening to the Infinite Ryvius soundtracks and falling in love with 'em all over again. It was a bit saddening when people ridiculed this series for having techno-esque music before they realized the series itself was almost seven years old.
CMA
The best anime OSTs I ran into were those from the .hack series.
Besides those, Naruto, Mai HiME and BECK also deserve a mention. Really good.
kiseki89
I have always been a Anime song gal...
I love the songs form FMA, some from Naruto, Hikaru No go, Cardcaptor Sakura and many more.
In my opinion, one way of determining if the anime is good is through its music.

So what you're saying is that you dislike music in general? As quite a bit of music from anime covers a wide variety of musical genres. Perhaps you're just referring to J-pop music? See, sweeping generalizations don't do anyone ANY good.

I know it never made it to the English release of the DVDs, but Melissa by Porno Graffiti is a far superior song IMO. And it's a shame too.

Also, I'm not ashamed to admit that I really enjoy WHR's OP, Shell by Bana. And while they are definitely cheesecakey, the OP and ED from DearS are just too adorable to be ingored.

Do you know what the reason for that was? The one that I had heard was of FUNimation already having a contract of some sort with L'Arc~en~Ciel, Melissa was scrapped completely in order to promote 'em. However, I had originally thought that parents would be bugged if they found their children listening to a band called Porno Graffitti. XD

Melissa was the first song that I heard from Fullmetal Alchemist/Hagaren, and to this day it's my favorite opening. I'm personally not a fan of L'Arc, so I didn't like READY STEADY GO from the start. UNDO was all right, but I preferred the B-side to COOL JOKE's single more (bukkowareta tsuki).
Tex_Arcana
I heard that sometimes the licence for the theme songs used in Japan don't always go with the licence of the anime, especially if the theme song is really just some general j-pop tune and not really made to go with the series.

Another thing is if the licencing company that buys the rights to an anime they think has a lot of "saturday morning cartoon" potential like say Pokemon they will "americanize" the hell out of it with new theme music and new names for the character, even change up the dialog quite a bit (which of course always sucks).

By the way one of the music stations on the Pandora station list on my site is called Punk Arcanum is built around the Japanese neo-punk band The Pillows (you may remember them from FLCL). Has anyone been following The Pillows. Have they added a female vocalist or is there a chick band called The Pillows now? A lot of the newer Pillows Music has featured a female lead vocal who sings in very good english (though every once and a while you catch an accent). Of course Pandora won't play just The Pillows (especially since I also include Patti Smith and Talking Heads song Psycho Killer) but when they do it is always good and a bit surprising. Always sounds simular but allways different.

The Soundtrack for X is really good.
Try the song: Destiny... Wow great, fantastic. And you even don't have to understand what they're singing because they don't Very Happy.

The soundtrack of animes sound really nice but whenever I read the translation I have to ask myself: What are they singing? Does it have any sence? What's the point of it or are their any?
urbanbuddha
I don't want to regurgitate the animes thats been said, so I'll just list them:

Bleach: I like their choices for the their alternative selections. They got me to listen to a few of their featured bands such as "Orange Range" and "High and Might Colour".

Naruto: Same a above.

Initial D: From "Night of Fire" to "Dog Fight" the songs from this anime really gets your adrenaline running and wanting more.

And now some of the unmentioned animes:

Beck: Well what can I say, this is by far the most entertaining anime and with some of the most memorable music, for me at least. It is, of course, musical related as it follows a high school boy, Koyuki, and how he was inspired to play guitar and from there on flourished into a garage band dream. Well worth a watch and listen to via the OSTs

Tsubasa Chornicles: Yes I know its done by CLAMP, and yes I know it stars Sakura from CCS. Nonetheless the music is great

Sousei no Aquarion: I believe this deserves a bit of recognizition, the 1st OP was really good and its my girlfriend's favourite.

Noir: It's an "oldie" around the time of Lain and Witch Hunter Robin, but when the action started to get you pumping, enter the tantalizing beats =)

I believe it was the former more than the latter. Porno Graffiti is a pretty mainstream band, and are even pretty well-known in the US.

Oh man, you're totally right! How did I miss mentioning this? Fantastic anime, with just fantastic music (even if the Engrish gets pretty bad sometimes.) My only complaint is that the OP, Hit in the USA is a great song (and hilarious music video too BTW,) but when I finally tracked down a Beat Crusaders CD I found their music very highschool/Blink182-esque. Don't get me wrong, they have a few good songs, but most of their stuff sounds like top 40 alternative hits in the US (no pun intended.) Still a good anime that I recommend to everyone.

I like pretty much all of the anime music I've ever heard, and from there I branched out into Japanese music in general. A lot of artists that do anime tracks have excellent music that never makes it into the animes.

I'm a really big ORANGE RANGE fan-- they did the "Asterisk" opening (I think it was an opening) for Bleach and the "Viva Rock ~Japanese Side" ending theme for Naruto; they do really fun music. If any of you have played the Nintendo DS game "Ossu! Tatakai! Ouendan!", ORANGE RANGE has a song in there called "Shanghai Honey"; it's the stage with the two policemen and the robots invading from outer space.

Another band that does an anime track or two that are really good are Asian Kung-Fu Generation. They did the "Haruka Kanata" opening from Naruto, and have probably done some more anime tracks that I don't know about.

I like L'Arc~en~Ciel, but I'm not rabid over them. They have some good tracks; "Driver's High" for Great Teacher Onizuka is pretty good, and I really like "Spirit Dreams Inside" for a reason I'll never understand, which they did for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.
ltbennett
The new final fantasy soundtracks espesialy the one from the movie are exelent tho i cant remember the conposers name if any 1 knows plz tell me i just cant remember Rolling Eyes Very Happy Cool Twisted Evil Arrow Arrow Arrow

The Final Fantasy music is generally all composed by Nobuo Uematsu, though he's actually retired now. It makes me kind of sad-- FF games just won't be the same wihtout his music...

Well he still does stuff...like the themes to Super Smash Bros Brawl and FFXIII.
Really is a shame that Square didn't give Yasunori Mitsuda the job of composing for FF now...in my opinion he's as good as Nobuo...I mean, the opening to Chrono Cross is like my favouritest thing ever.
tsukiyuuki
Yeah, Mitsuda is really good; I don't even know who IS in charge of the music now, since Uematsu retired. I think I saw it somewhere, but I forget.

You could always try an undelete or file recovery. Though it depends how long ago you reformatted and if you install/put anything new on the drive that was formatted.

agh, I just adore anime music! (Actually, I love all Asian pop music in general, but that includes the anime music too...) Most of my ipod's filled with anime music! Dancing I get most of them at Gendo's, but others I have the CDs for, and I love them to death! Very Happy

I'm a musician, I make music of a lot of styles, I also make anime music. We are making an anime at
http://youtube.com/watch?v=a32UTlQYpWo

and I'm doing the music of it too. We are releasing the OST of the anime when we finish the proyect.

Anime music is very cool, I like it, because is not so as pop as Usa music.
jasmine
I absolutely adore anime music! I also like asian music. It's funny that I love them though I really don't get what they're saying.

I guess that's what the power of music is all about. Reaching across other cultural markets despite the language barrier.

Surprised

I love listening Anime musics.. /heh i currently have 1k+ jpop, rock and anime musics and still download for more.. /heh

I like a lot of Japanese music but I mainly only hear it through anime. I heard The Pillows in FLCL and they sound great, as are Orange Range. I mainly like the openings and ending music to episodes.
jimbluey
@itswesley
Orange range.. that band is very awesome.. i like there songs.. specialy "Viva Rock" and "Hana".

I love 2 things about anime music:

1) I don't speak Japanese, but I love the sound of the language. When I listen to anime music, I can appreciate the sound of the words better than when I listen to music in a language I understand.

2) When I *do* read translations of the lyrics, they're usually much more poetic than American lyrics, and there's more variety in the themes of the songs.

Main gripe: so much synthesized music o_O.
crimson_aria
I love the music in Rurouni Kenshin , Gravitation,Cardcaptor Sakura, and Inuyasha. These are the ones I can think of now.
bunnyRO
yea..anime music is cool..love them..especially when they're accompanied with visuals from the anime..Initial D-Forever Young-best imo

i like anime music quite alot, especially their piano pieces. There's this one piece that i absolutly love, its when zabuza dies next to haku, in episode 19 of naruto, youtube link for the scene here:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=acQogKOUr24&mode=related&search=naruto%20episode%2019
(youtube is down for the moment apparently)

This is just a really good piano piece from naruto, like many others you get through different animes. I also quite like the begining theme to fumoffu "sorega aideshou", thats quite nice. btw, does anyone here have the soundtracks to naruto?
hofodomo01
try gendou.com its free registration and has direct downloads of anime songs from just about every series imaginable. my personal favourites are tori no uta, by lia (Air -- this song is so amazing...beautiful, sad, and has a pop beat you can groove to) and lilium (forget the artist, from elfen lied---a very different song, it sounds like a requiem mass)
Nintendo

Recently, I've been listening to the song "Sakura Kiss" by Chieco Kawabe a lot. It's the opening theme for the anime Ouran High School Host Club, which I have become completely addicted to. It's an almost excessively happy and energetic song that I would definitely recommend that you guys listen to. Very Happy
exarkun
I love Gundam Seed's anime music. They let me feel happier and filled with energy whenever I listen to it. (Well, feel much like a potion, isn't it? Wink )

I'm loving the music of Howl's Moving Castle. But I can't avail of the OST anywhere! Waaaaaah!

I agree, most of them have really good chords and end up getting quite upbeat near to the end. heheh, any of you watch sailor stars? its the biggest pile of crap iv ever had the misfortune to watch, but i like the opening theme to it, in exactly the way you explained exarkun. a good song wasted on a bad anime imo.
Nintendo
Btw, does anyone know what the name of the first opening theme for naruto is? It was the opening theme from ep2 up to 19 i think. Anyone know the name, or even the artist?
jasmine
Also, I am just not into the 'music' per se of anime. I also go for the instrumentals a lot! I get to remember the scenes and episodes because of it. Very Happy

Without the music, no anime would be as sucsessful as it is. Imagine Naruto without that awesome fight and emotional music?

The music in Noir was one of the things that made me enjoy the series as much as I did, though I recall it getting a little repetative towards the end.

My two absolute favourite tunes would have to be:

Inner Universe the opening theme from GITSSAC and the song "Forces" from Beserk - I can listen to them over and overand they still sends shivers down my spine.

I dont think it gets any better than that.
yy1124
I like most of the musics in Tsubasa...

Bleach and Naruto have some nice musics too, but I can't remember their name exactly.

Those songs sang by Lycus in Gundam Seed and Seed Destiny are all cool, and I like "Brothers" of Fullmetal Achemist the best~
Nintendo
thx again hofodomo01. It is now slafely DLed Razz. And yeah, Bleach and Naruto music is good, i especially like all the piano pieces. I can now play Sadness and Sorrow from naruto, on the piano now! Very Happy

As of the moment, my fave anime song is the ending song of Princess Princess. Smile It's cute and pop in its own way, it makes my head bop. Very Happy
Hayate
the music in anime are all so goooood....
the openings AND the endings, but not only that, also the BGM are always so touching ( at least if you followed the anime ).

I like the music used in:

Mai Hime, especially the Mezame BGM. it gives me so much inspiration to draw
Tsubasa Chronicle, all the music used in there are so touching
Video Girl Ai, when our internet was a 56kb modem I could never watch anime and I downloaded alot of midi's. one of them was from Video Girl Ai and I loved it. because of the music I started to watch the anime XD
Tenjou Tenge has a very groovy opening theme!
I like the opening in Grenadier, owh well, all the anime music just rocks XD
Nintendo

Machan
God Knows, Lost My Music, and all of Aya Hirano's songs from Suzumiya Haruhi No Yuuutsu are really nice. I'm trying to learn to play God Knows on the guitar, but it's so fast...

My favourite anime music is from:

Beck - Moon on the water totally hooked me in and has been on my playlists since.

Initial D - Similar to those who really like the music, everytime I hear it you wish you can just drive fast and drive on the mountain roads.

.Hack// - For some, its a hit or miss, but I like the music.
Lessien
ranma 1/2 has also good music
especially the opening theme for the first season
i tell ya
onca ya hear that one, it will be stuck in there for ever
but it's such a catchy tune
the music in outlaw star is also nice
i love the ending themes there, they sound so soft
as for the lyrics of some songs, try

Tatsumaru
Tsubasa Chronciles has the best anime music ever. Especially that female choir song, it's beauitful.

one of the best anime soundtracks is the one from .Hack Sign(i love that serie)

another good soundtracks: FLCL and Cowboy beebop
corycaly
FMA has some good songs: my favorite one is Rewrite, by Asian Kun Fu generation. The songs of Noir are interesting, I like their atmosphere. I like Loveless ending too, it's called Michiyuki.
Sayonara Solitaire (ending of chrno crusade) and the ending of GTO, the one called Shizuku (by Okuda Miwako) are beautiful too.
Vabiant
Every Anime I seem to watch has awesome music scores. One Piece, FMA, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, the list goes on... All have awesome music scores.

Also, anything done by Yoko Kano (Escaflowne and it's movie, and Cowboy Bebop and it's movie).

Utawarerumono, Last Exile, ande Haibane Renmei has some really good music too. I'm also partial to Mitsumune Shinkichi's music (Rozen Maiden, Rozen Maiden Traumend, Rozen Maiden Ouverture, Zero no Tsukaima) .

Studio Ghibli's new movie Gedo Senki (Tales from Earthsea) has a nice soundtrack as well. As well as Aoi Teshima's music.

I totally agree! Initial D has great music - I play the racing games for it at the local arcade just to hear the music! Have you listened to any Eurobeat besides the stuff that's in Initial D? Quite a bit of it's really good, as well.

I also agree on the .hack music being amazing.

I'd like to add in GetBackers, as well. There are some really awesome songs from it (most of the openings and endings are superb, as well as "Bloom" and the "Tinny Waltz"). My favourite from it is probably "Barairo no Sekai (The Rose-Colored World)" by PIERROT.
