¡Hola!
Me alegra mucho ver que tienes tanto interés en aprender español. A un nivel de llevarlo fuera de clase y aplicarlo en un lugar como este. Definitivamente, esto no es nada común entre jóvenes de tu grado, por lo tanto, felicitaciones. Yo soy un estudiante de primer año en la universidad, y con mucho gusto te ayudaría.

Hello! If you have been taught English properly (not usually a given, anymore, in the U.S. Government schools of today), certain things in Spanish will come easily. On the other hand, a lack of understanding of grammar (especially when you get to reflexive and subjunctive forms) will make things more difficult. With a sufficient knowledge of basic grammar, however, the study of Spanish will probably HELP your English.

A few tidbits to get you started:
  • If you're not sure of a Spanish word to use for the English word you wish to say, think of the longest, most fluid-sounding English equivalent, and you will probably be close to an appropriate Spanish word, since most of the long, fluid words of English came into English from Latin - the parent language of Spanish. Example: for the English "to need," consider "to necessitate," and you will be very close to the Spanish, "necesitar."
  • Many English words that end in "ity" have direct or near equivalents in Spanish with the "ity" changed to "idad." Examples: "electricity" - "electricidad"; "university" - "universidad"; "security" - "seguridad"; "city" - "ciudad." (As you can see, they may not always be EXACT matches).
  • Many English adverbs that end in "ly" are almost the same in Spanish, with the "ly" changed to "amente." Examples: "rapidly" - "rapidamente"; "certainly" - "ciertamente."
  • If you have trouble rolling the R sound for Spanish words, try the following trick with which my seventh-grade Spanish teacher helped those who had similar difficulty: Think of the Spanish word for "mother," which is "madre," but say "mah-duh-day" instead. Keep saying it, but faster and faster each time. Eventually, you will find that your are reproducing the rolling R sound. Of course, this doesn't work for all Spanish words - it is just a trick to practice the sound, itself.

These are just a few, quick hints that can be helpful when you are just starting Spanish. They are not perfect, but they can be good "instant vocabulary builders" for newbies.

Of course, be careful of "false friends" (words that SEEM to be the same) and common grammatical slip-ups, as well. Probably two of the most common are:
  • After learning that "cómo" means "how" and "mucho" means "much," people often make the mistake of asking the cost of something by saying "Como mucho," which means "I eat a lot" (i.e. "como" is the first person form of "comer" - "to eat"). "How much" should actually be "cuanto" (as in "quantity").
  • Finally, the really funny one: If you were embarrassed by something, the proper Spanish word is "avergonzado" (ashamed). If you make the mistake of saying you were "embarazada," you are saying that you are pregnant!

By no means am I an expert in Spanish (I still need a LOT more practice!), but these are some things I have found helpful and that some of my early classmates also found helpful.
