I don't know if this is as big of a story elsewhere as it is here, but earlier this week former Illinois governor George Ryan was found guilty in federal court of 18 counts including, but not limited to, racketeering, conspiracy, mail fraud, tax fraud, obstructing the Internal Revenue Service and lying to the FBI. Georgie is one of those old school politicians. He's not going to go out like the governor of New Jersey James McGreevey did a couple of years ago by announcing he was gay after being discovered in an affair with another man. No, if Ryan is going to go it's going to be for good, old-fashioned abuse of the public trust and defrauding of the citizens who elected him. But the wheels of justice turn slowly. While Ryan only served one term as governor, elected in 1998, he had plenty of experience in Illinois politics serving five terms in the state House and then two four-year terms as secretary of state. It wasn't until a deadly accident was caused by a truck driver whose license may have been fraudulently obtained with payoff money from a woman raising Ryan campaign funds did the screws finally start to get applied. And it only took about ten years to convict. Heck, if they waited a couple more years old George would probably save them the trouble and just drop dead. Of course, in typical political fashion Ryan and his lawyers have vowed to appeal the conviction, which carries so many years that the former governor would need the longevity of Methusaleh to serve them all. With enough appeals, I've got twenty bucks that says he'll never see the inside of a cell. |
