How about a referral contest. You could install a MOD on phpBB so we have referral links, and it could be done as a contest.

with a MOD for referral, all credits are automatically added. so with the rewards, there's no need for a contest unless you are saying who has the biggest referral !

Make your own even. A one page script. Very easy to make. Then make a cronjob for another script which counts referals for each member over a period of time then resets it to 0 for everyone. It could work and nicely
